High Cholesterol Remedies
My husband just had blood work done and his cholesterol levels have shot up big time and his good cholesterol is low. his eating habits are not the greatest, something I am working on. But over all he doesn't eat things that would cause a large increase since his last check up 2 yrs ago and if anything his diet has gotten better. His doc prescribed some meds but with insurance they still cost an arm and a leg (about $200 a month!!!) which we really can't afford. I was wondering if anyone knows of some ways to lower cholesterol without meds, like herbal supplements or foods to eat or avoid. Any help is greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?™
Wow! Thanks for all the great advice! My hubby and I decided that he should not take the meds. He is going to take garlic supplements,a multi-vitamin for lowering cholesterol he found at costco, as well as JuicePlus and we are going to continue to improve our diet with more fiber. Hopefully this will work. We also realized that the morning of his test he had had coffee with non-fat creamer and sugar (he uses a lot of sugar too) so we are thinking this could be why the numbers were so high. He is also going to go to another doctor and get re-tested. His doc is well, old. This doc actually delivered my husband! and hubby has been going to him all his life. So now he has decided to get a new doc cause he didn't like being put on meds right away. Thanks a ton for all of your help!!!

My boyfriend had exactly the same problem last November. His doctor wanted to wait a month before putting him on meds to see if he can lose some weight and exercise, and see if that would have an impact on his cholesterol/triglyceride numbers. His numbers were off the charts high, and the "good" cholesterol was very low.
Right away, my boyfriend increased his fiber intake, eating high fiber, low sugar cereals like three times a day. He ate more fruits and veg's, drank tons of water, and decreased his fat and dairy in take. He did this EVERY DAY for a month. In addition to this, he started taking garlic, green tea, and chromium picolinate supplements (his doc told him to try the picolinate, but I've just read it may not be good to use). Also he tried Xtendlife Cholest-Natural - a supplement we found on the internet. (We are not the types to just get stuff from the internet and trust it right away, I guess the Xtend life was an exception.)
Anyway, within in a month and a half's time, he had lost 13 lbs and his number went down to normal. His doctor was very truly amazed, as were we! We can't pinpoint what exactly worked, if it was the weight loss or the supplements or both, but something did work!

Good recommendations so far... just reiterating most. Cut way back on any animal product (meat/dairy), like max once a day. Cut way back on meat- I don't just mean one traditional american serving a day, I mean 4 oz of red meat maybe three times a week, and a few servings of chicken as well. 4oz is about the size of a deck of playing cards. To help replace some of the lost meat, fix more fish (the fat in fish helps lower bad and raise good cholesterol) and replace the meat in other dishes, such as spaghetti and casseroles, with canned beans (black beans, white beans, whatever you like best). Nuts and seeds will also help keep him full without wanting so much meat, and another source of good fat that will help reduce his cholesterol (as well as avocados- just do all of these in moderation because they are fatty). For milk try alternatives such as soy or rice milk(biggest difference is taste because both are fortified, soy has some fat and rice has none- I love light vanilla soy from Silk, but rice milk has a more similar mouth feel to milk. For some strange reason people have such a problem with milk substitutes, but they taste good and if he's serious he'll try them!) Absolutely no cheese or butter (can sub the cholesterol free kinds like smart balance). And if he eats eggs sub egg beaters and fix veggie omelets (I love spinach- I use the frozen kind, onion and tomato omelets). Lots and lots and lots of fiber- my dad eats oatmeal for breakfast every day for his cholesterol (old fashioned has a tad more fiber than quick or instant), switch out all white flour products for whole grain- fortunately this is easy now because anything has a whole wheat counterpart. Don't buy "wheat"- look for "whole wheat" or "100% stone ground wheat" and read the label: a good bread should have 3g of fiber per slice. I believe the heart healthy versions are lower in cholesterol, too. It's a little more expensive, but a better choice than hundereds a month on meds. Avoid canned vegetables, using instead fresh or frozen which have more fiber and plant sterols which lower cholesterol. And cereal, which has really played up the cholesterol lowering thing lately, look for no lower than 5g of fiber per serving. Raisin bran or any bran flake is a good choice, and I think they're good. Smart Start is good too, but I can't remember the fiber content. Cheerios aren't actually the best even though they proudly advertise their benefits- they won't hurt, by any means, but they're low on the fiber side. If you're diligent, though, you should be able to control his cholesterol without meds. I would also find some way to encourage him to excersize, even if the two of you just take a 30 min walk after dinner or something. And if you start finding it difficult, just think about the years you are adding onto your husband's life! Use the internet to help you find healthier recipies that are high in fiber and veggies instead of meat and cheese, and with a little practice you'll be able to adapt any recipe to meet your needs.

Jaimie:
Unfortunately cholesterol can come from two different sources. Some are the foods we eat and some are genetic. As for foods to avoid, everything that comes from an animal has cholesterol and this includes meat, milk, and cheese. My family (parents, siblings, aunts, cousins) all tend to have high colesterol. Some of us are vegetarians and still have problems so for us it is generic. Not much we can do but take the meds. There is alot of information out there, check webmd.com or just google "high cholesterol" and you can get lots of info on helping him. Good luck. M.

You have to find the reason why his cholesterol shot up so fast. Eating better and exercise may not be the answer.
However in most cases, increase fiber and water, eat protein with vegetables with fruit in between. NO refined sugar or flour. Read labels.
