There is a great place in Palo Alto called the Children's Health Council. You do not need a referral, although it might be better for insurance purposes if you have one. Please look for them online at chconline.org. They are incredibly helpful and take a very rounded approach to assessments with different specialists addressing each concern. It can be quite expensive, but I believe they offer some financial aid. I can't recommend them enough.

2st she should start with the pediatrician. He/She should be able to assess some basic attention, asperger, developmental delays, etc. She should also get a recommendation of where to go next.

J.,
I can recommend Brendan Pratt - Pratt Center in Los Altos. I work at a school and he is one of a small number I recommend to parents. Children's Health Council is another great one as is Dr. Ruth Serepca.

In addition to Children's Health Council (650) 326 - 5530, you might call the local school district to do an assesment. It's hard to say from the info you gave if he would qualify for a school district program.

Also, Parents Helping Parents (www.php.com) in San Jose might be able to help direct your friend to appropriate resources.
