Hepatitis

My doctor did some blood work to see if the symptoms I was having could be something other then the flu. My liver levels were elevated. He said it could still be a virus or possibly hepatitis. I am having another blood test done to verify. I am really worried and scared. I don't know much about hepatitis but I thought it could hurt your liver or cause liver cancer. Has anyone had this before or can tell me more about it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Good news I do NOT have hepatitis. The ultrasound of my liver turned out normal too and my liver counts went down. The doctor thinks I had a bad stomack virus. Thank you for all of your comments, it really helped to ease my fears.

Hi B.,

Any problem related to the liver is potentially dangerous. Hepatitis is not always, but usually, a virus. Your liver is what keeps you body from shutting down by clearing the toxins out. When the liver gets too toxic to handle more is when everything shuts down. However, You CAN detox a liver.

This is more and more common now because of the toxins in our food supply (i.e. preservatives, pesticides, and absorbed chemicals through the skins.) Feel free to email me back when you find out what exactly is going on, whether it's Hepatitis or not, you liver needs help. Anything to do with the liver needs to be diagnosed early.

Regards,

M.

I noticed that you are due in June with another child. Congratulations! I just wanted to share my experience. When I was 37 weeks into my first pregnancy - I developed something called HELLP syndrome. It is related to pre-eclampsia but typically you have high blood pressure, protein in your urine, low platelet counts, and high liver levels. Not a lot of people know about HELLP but it can be very dangerous for both mom and baby. This may be way off base for you and maybe your dr. has already ruled that out but just wanted to let you know about it since it can be so dangerous and it is important to diagnose it early. Please let us know how this turns out for you.

After reading what everyone had to say, I agree about just waiting it out to see what the doctor said. Now having said that, Betty is completely right. My Father, My uncle and my husband's uncle all died of different types of hepatitis BUT it was because they did NOT take care of themselves at ALL! For two of them excessive drinking made the liver condition much worse so they could not fight off the hepatitis and it gave them Cirhosis of the Liver sp? The other one did drugs and when he quit it was too late, plus he drank a little too.

But Betty is right, any disease of any kind cancer, aids, hepatitis, whatever can be dealt with by creating an environment that is healthy in the body. I personally use essential oils which are more potent than herbs, but I see a medical doctors, specialists when needed, and a Naturopath doctor plus I read a lot, and I'm very spiritual which is what got me out of a wheelchair and healed of a brain injury and many things through my life. It's what worked for me.

Don't be afraid, I've had all sorts of things I've had to deal with before, even while pregnant, the first was having nodules in my neck/thyroid and all sorts of stuff.

Just remain calm for you and that baby inside of you, trust that things will be ok, no matter WHAT the doctors say and educated yourself on whatever is going on. Ask for second opinions, see specialists, find a naturopath in your area to work with your doctors in treatments. There are so many reasons your liver levels could be high, it could be diet or so many various things, plus you are pregnant now and your body is going nuts to take care of that baby inside of you.

You're in my prayers and I wish the best for you, keep us posted. Big hugs!

I have a master's degree in infectious diseases, so I know at least the basics about hepatitis. There are 5 different viruses that can cause hepatitis, although only 2 are relatevley common in the US.

Hepatitis B and C are the most common in the US. Both are transmitted by blood and other body fluids. There is an extremely effective vaccine for B, but not C. There are treatments for both, but because these are viruses and not bacteria, the treatments have variable success. With hepatitis B you usually get sick right after you become infected. You might get rid of the infection, or it might linger in your body for quite some time. With hepatitis C, you usually do not get sick right after you get infected. It can actually take 10-30 years before you have symptoms.

Both of these can cause cirrhosis of the liver. More rarely, they can cause liver cancer. If you get hepatitis, you will not automatically get cancer. Most patients don't. Hepatitis C, while still relatively rare, is the leading cause of liver transplant in the US. Then again, some patients die at an old age from something else without ever knowing they were infected.

Hepatitis A is transmitted through contaminated food and water. This is not common in the US, except in daycares. It can be common in other parts of the world. The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for international travel to many countries. You could become infected after eating contaminated food while traveling. You could potentially become infected from having a child in a daycare during an outbreak. Still, this is very uncommon. Hepatitis A can usually be resolved by the body's immune system with no lasting effects.

No matter what happens, you can deal with it. A diagnosis of hepatitis of any kind can be a serious condition, but is very rarely life-threatening. Good luck!

Hi B., my name is M. and I work for the Health Dept here in Ocala and do Hepatitis cases daily. There are 3 major hepatitis', Hepatitis A, B and C. And yes they do affect your liver, but I have seen 80 year olds with Hep C that have never had symptoms and have lived perfectly normal lives. What symptoms have you been having? A great place to go to get info is

If I can help with anything, please let me know.

Hi B.,

I can imagine what a scare you might have gotten. Hepatitis, is an auto-immune disease. Sometimes it is curable and sometimes it is not. My future daughter-in-law went through this recently and thank God it just turned out to be an mild kidney infection, and lots of antibiotics in the hospital did the trick. I found this site: http://www.healthnewsflash.com/conditions/viral_hepatitis...
to have some helpful information and also webmd.com has a lot of information also. Do not get scared. Many times this is misdiagnosed. I had a disease a while back and found a product call 4Life Transfer Factor, which gives your Immune System intelligence and raises it up like nothing out there. This is not a vitamin, it is a molecule. This product actually turned my life around. So now, I also promote the product, when I learn that there is someone out there that really needs it. It can be taken by anyone from 2 months old and up. Go to www.esoes4life.my4life.com and you can get more information about it. I hope you get better very soon.
To your health and success,
M. G.

B. it is very common to have elevated liver enzymes as well as other lab abnormalities during viral or bacterial illnesses. I would bet that your labs normalize over timem, especially if you don't have jaundice (yellowing of skin or whites of the eyes) or right sided abdominal tenderness. Try not to worry. Likely it is not hepatitis. My husband is a pediatrician in palm coast if you would like to call him with any questions he would be more than happy to talk to you. ###-###-#### Dr Davis

Hey B.!
In January I also thought that I had the flu with probably a very nasty urinary tract infection because my body ached, especially my right abdomen plus my urine sample was the color of rust. My liver counts were "very, very" elevated and I was extremely jaundice. To make a long story short, I was hospitalized for 5 days and had multiple CT scans, ultrasounds, and even in and out of the OR twice and they honestly found nothing concrete wrong with me. They "think" that it had to do with a new hormone replacement drug that I had been taking for only 45 days and I had had a normal blood test only a month before that so don't mess around with this especially in your condition. I am older than you and have had a hysterectomy but other than that, elevated liver counts are nothing to mess with ever. My liver counts are still not back to normal and the repairing of my liver by itself takes alot of time and energy so be careful. I truly am not trying to scare you but I personally didn't realize how quickly something like this can happen and how frightening it can be until you go through it yourself. I had the test for hepatitis(all 3 types) and nothing showed up and they even sent blood samples to labs all around the country and nothing. Hope all goes well with you and I wish the best to you and your family. Hang in there and keep on top of this with your doctor.

Did he say Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C? They are different in how they affect you long-term. Before you get too upset, though, let your doctor run the tests and give you a correct diagnosis. Then you can move forward with the information you need to take care of yourself.
Good luck!

I used to work in healthcare, This is a very standard prodedure running another test called a liver function ( lft) test. There are a number of reasons you could of had blood values that were a little off and that would justify running a test for Hep. It is very common and most of the time the liver test comes out normal. Don't stress about it to much, Like I said it is really standad protocol.
Wishing you the best

Yes, Hepatitis is something to be concerned about. I have had it for 30 years. I use supplements that support the body's immune system by increasing the production of the body's own interferon. There are no side effects because it is a combination of botanicals researched and clinically tested by the dr. who developed Interferon over 40 years ago.
I market this product and you can check it out.
