Hello, I am on a search for helpful parenting books, especially focused on changing difficult behavior. I work in an after school program and would like to offer some parents advice via books! I know there are bookstores full of parenting books, but I would love to hear from you what has worked in your own parenting career. Thanks!

The two most practical books I've used as a parent and as a professional working with parents are "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk" by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish; and "He Hit Me First" by Louise Bates Ames and Carol Chase Haber. Another personal favorite is "Confessions of a Slacker Mom",(author upstairs and I"m not right now, :) as well as "Models of Love" by Joyce and Barry Vissell.

Hi D.,

I wanted to let you know that I teach Love and Logic classes both privately and in groups here in Rio Rancho. My next class is starting Sunday night the 15th at the Unitarian center on Abrazo. I invite you to come to the first class for free to see if you think it is a good fit for your family. The class is 2 hours once a week for 7 weeks. A small investment of time for a lifetime of peace and harmony between family members. Please call if you have any questions: E. at ###-###-####

The Total Transformation by James Lehman is awesome. It is very expensive, but they let you make payments and it goes over anything and everything you will encounter. It has CD's and a workbook. I will probably never need another parenting program ever again.

Hi D.,
I read lots of responses encouraging Parenting with Love and Logic, but if you find it to be a little too harsh and robotic for your parenting philosophy like I did, try The Power of Positive Parenting : A Wonderful Way to Raise Children by Glenn I. Latham. It is more loving, but very similar. You can check out a little more at www.parentrx.com
I also like The Five Love Languages of Children for parenting. I find that when my children feel loved and get my attention, things go much better in general.
You aren't alone and it's so worth it. I'm saying this as much for you as I am for myself :)

I have always recommended Dr. William Sears and his wife, Martha Sears. They have great books, including one called The Discipline Book which covers birth to Age 10. Wonderful advice and smart techniques in this book!

I also recommend "Parenting With Love and Logic". I have read several parenting books, and these are, by far, the best books I have studied. Among other things, they talk about giving your children choices so they may feel in control of their own lives and how to teach them to become responsible adults. I know that several teachers and schools use these books also. They are definitely worth looking into.

I like "Don't Make Me Count to Three" and "Shepherding a Child's Heart." Both of these are Christian.

Parenting With Love and Logic is an awesome book. It teaches many ways to deal with difficult or undesired behavior by teaching the parent new ways of handling it that puts the responsibility where it belongs - on the child. The first half of the book teaches the Love and Logic approach and the last half gives "parenting pearls" which are specific examples of how to handle classically difficult behavior like sassing, homework, chores, etc. I am a mother of 4 ranging from 1 - 16. I have kept my sanity with help from this book. God bless you and all of the families that you work with.

Love and Logic. We have 5 kids ages 13- 2. We discovered this program about 3 years ago and it changed our parenting world. You just have to stick with it. They have books, classes, CDs to listen to in the car. Check out www.loveandlogic.com

1,2,3 Magic! It is the best one I've read for my 2 sons. Consistency, consequences, staying calm, eye to eye. It is great!

Right now, I'm reading Raising Your Spirited Child. It is helping me stay positive and trying to figure out how my one son thinks and how I can better anticipate/respond to him. He has a TON of energy, whines/complains a lot, ignores, responds negatively etc. It is a real drain in our household. This is proving very helpful so far in how I think/approach him.

Hi,
Love and Logic has great books and cds. You can go to their website and look for specific problems you are having or age appropriate materials.
They are full of humorous stories that provide examples of the love and logic philosophy.
I find them entertaining, informative and super helpful.
