I'm hoping that you ladies who go to garage sales regularly may be able to help me. I have a plastic swing set for younger kids (was about $350? when new) and a plastic play house ($175 new) that I'm selling in a garage sale. I have no idea what to price these at. They are in so-so shape, but still usuable. Thanks for ANY help you can give me!

What can I do next?

I'm not the best at pricing things at garage sales either, I know I under price items, but on the same hand, I just want to get rid of them. It's really hard to tell you how much you should charge without seeing them, however, maybe the item you paid $350 for I'd ask $75 and $40 for the other... again I don't know how long you had it or how much use it's been thru, and I usually under price items.
Good Luck on the garage sale!

You might have already received this suggestion but I didn't read your other responses. You might try doing a search for those items on Craigslist. Compare to those prices in your area and price it accordingly. Good luck. Now is the perfect time to sell those items.

The thing with garage sales.... most shoppers don't carry hundreds of dollars of cash on them... so they don't expect to see $100s prices. You will probably get more $$ by posting it on craigslist for sale (WITH pictures).
So most garage sale shoppers are looking for a great deal -- they are more than happy to walk away and then there you are stuck with the same items at the end of the day. When i see high priced items at a garage sale -- I immediately just go back to my car b/c this is a seller that thinks very highly of their items.
You must enter the garage sale with the mentality that you want to get rid of it ... first, research these items by going on craigslist and ebay to see what others are selling these items or similar ones for .... then price them below that, slightly below ... and then when you have sellers ask about it -- don't budge on the price if it's opening time .. but if it hasn't left your sale by mid-day... be willing to drop the price when people ask you to go down -- perhaps even put a new price on it at mid-day.

I don't mean to be a party pooper here but my experience has been.....

I tried garage sales and it is so frustrating that I just donate the sale items now and get a tax benefit. It is healthier for me, LOL

Whatever price you put on your items....expect the customers to want it for NOTHING. I had $50 Abercrombie jeans never worn and with tags still attached, I put a price tag of $7 and I was offered $1-2. Same thing with other good merchandise. I got so frustrated at people trying to dicker I just told people to leave my house and I closed up shop on the spot. I took everything to the Women's Shelter in Plano.

I was not trying to make a bundle of money but I refuse to just give it away to someone trying to deal.

Be prepared and make sure you watch the people that come in. Another reason we stopped is because a lot of "customers" are casing your house to see what you have. We put things up on the street away from our garage and house. I was appalled at the number of people who asked to go inside to get water or use the restroom. I am not kidding.

I wish you great success with your sale.

I disagree wih one of the other posters. Serious garage salers do carry hundreds of dollars with them. Or, they will be able to have you hold something while they run to an ATM. I did that when I saw a kids jeep. I asked them to please hold it for me and ran to get cash. Right now is a great time to sell that swingset- people are looking for outdoor toys and furniture. If possible, have it set up, so kids will be drawn to it and parents will see how much fun it would be to have it. I have been told that 1/4 of the retail price is what you should mark items, but be willing to negotiate. Clothing should really be priced low- I think all the jeans at Goodwill are $3 regardless of brand, so keep that in mind. Good Luck!

I would say $75 & $30 but be willing to go lower. Have you thought about taking them to a children's resale shop? They might give you more money on the spot. And then you'll find out what to price it at.

I don't know without seeing your items exactly, but check on craigslist for similar items and see what they're going for. For a garage sale, I'd price a little below craigslist pricing. OR another way- just ask what you think it's worth, what you would like to get out of it. If it doesn't sell well, reduce your price later in the weekend or later in the day. Or if it doesn't sell at all, list it on craigslist (you'd probably get more that way anyway). Hope you make some extra cash!

The Craigslist idea is a good one. But from experience I know that price levels at a garage sale are usually lower than what you may post on Craigslist. So if you see a similar play house on Craigslist posted for $75, then don't expect to get more than $50 at your garage sale.

BTW . . . we just bought a used play house, in so-so condition, off of Craigslist for $60.

I agree that Craigslist might be your best bet. That way you can list a price and/or list "Or Best Offer". Most people don't plain on spending big dollars at a garage sale.

Does it have a slide too? If so and if it is in good condition $100 is reasonable. Most people will put things in garage sale at higher value and if it doesn't sell, then put it on craigslist...or donate it...maybe there is an orphanage or children's shelter that would take it.

If you want to get rid of it, price it to sell. Remember what ever you don't sell you are still stuck with.
