Help with My Biracial Kids Curly Hair

My kids have beautiful hair. My daughter's hair is especially beautiful and long. I use Pantene's conditioner (their ethnic line) when I wash their hair. I need something to use as a leave in so she can wear her hair down. I haven't cut her hair yet and am thinking that might help. I went to Sally's Beauty supply and found the suggestions not helpful. Anyone have success with any leave in or certain regimine that works for biracial hair? I am getting frustrated. Need help!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. For those who mentioned not washing but once a week-when they are in the bath, should i just rinse their hair and condition it? Normally, I wash and condition everytime.

All my girlfriends and I swear by Mix Chicks hair care. It's for bi-racial darlings and dudes. You can buy on line.

Hi,

A friend of mine whose doughter is Hispanic and Af-Am suggested Organics Africa's Best Hair Mayonnnaise to me. It is a leave-in. My daughter is African and Af-Am with very kinky hair. I used it on her and it works wonders. Makes the hair very manageble. It is very reasonably priced, 14 oz for $4.06 at Wal-Mart. You can get it at beauty supply places also. Hopes this helps.

I am glad that you asked this. My sister did not know what to do with her sons hair. Fortunately he is a boy and she can keep it buzzed for now. (he is 18 mo) She was upset though because she wanted to keep his curls :( I am going to give her some of this advice :)

I use Redken Ringlets and the Freezee line of products in my daughters hair. Her hair is very curly and is down her back, close to her butt. She likes to have her hair in a pony because it is hot in the summer but when it is cooler she likes to have it down so she can "swing" it. ;) The products work very well to keep the curls defined, but not frizzy. Hope this helps.

I have curly, silky hair and went through many trials trying to find the right product. I now have a daughter who is biracial and I will be applying all I have learned when I deal with her hair.
I used "Kinky Curly" and find it amazing with my hair. It's inexpensive, organic, and you can buy it online or at Whole Foods.
You also need to keep the ends trimmed regularly, because curly hair knots and that causes splitting faster than straight hair.
Once a month or so wash her hair with Prell to strip off all the buildup- because even using Pantene will cause product buildup. I wash my hair pretty much every day to reset the curls (I shampoo with Pantene curly- not the ethnic line in the brown bottle) and use the Pantene curly conditioner. Then I use the Kinky curly leave in and the curling custard.
Never comb her hair when it's dry, only wet.
Another good product is Miss Jessie's, but it's more expensive, is not organic, and you get product buildup faster.
Hope this helps a little!

I recommend finding an awesome hair stylist. My daughter is Guatemalan and has super-tight curls. It was getting harder and harder to comb after washing and it was a big fight in our house. We were finally recommended a great stylist (on our 3rd try!) and she has given us ideas for product, cut, hair care, etc., and our lives are so much easier now and our daughter's hair looks great. Invest some time in finding someone. Feel free to message me for the name and number of ours. Good luck!

there is a product that i use called placenta. it comes in a little vial and it usually costs between$1-$2. they have regular, super and olive oil. this stuff works great and they also have a form that comes in a pouch but the one in the pouch hs to be washed out. also try the Pink Oil Moisture line, there shampoo is great ( and smells soooo good) and the conditioner is good also. also if you don't want to press or perm their hair, flat irons will help straighten it out so they can wear it down. my sister is and mom are 100% black but i know they have the exeact hair that your daughters have! :( i didn't get it! lol but sometimes just blow drying their hair in sections with the comb on the blow dryer may also allow them to wear it down. I hope this helps. good luck.

Girl I feel your pain! My daughter is almost 10 and we have been through any and everything that is sold at sallys, walmart, and beauty salons. i do like the mixed chix line. what works best for my daughter when she wears it curly and down is to divide it in to little sections and use a thick serum and sometimes even a little gel mixed in then twist it around in to a bigger ringlet curl until it dries. I do this all over her head and the fluff it a little later before we leave the house and it keeps the curls contained and pretty... otherwise my daughters just kinks up and it is a tangled mess. i also sometimes keep the top part (like up to the headband line) braided in to about 6 braids and it helps it look neat and put together. I also like using the aussi moist conditioner. I like the pantene too.. a lot of times i dont rinse it out.

Sometimes I will get so frusterated with her hair and will contemplate putting a relaxer on her hair just to pull down the curl a little.... but then I come to my senses... I have several mixed friends who are now grown and wish they had never put chemicals on their hair. Also, curly headed chicks need more hair cuts. I have to have my daughters cut every 6 weeks to keep it under control. It grows faster and stays less tangled when I do it consistantly.

:)

It may take some trial and error before finding what works best. You should only wash her hair once a week though, too much washing causes dryness. Mixed chicks has some great products and you can order samples too. In the mean time Target has a variety of natural products you can try. I hope you find some relief.

Hi K.,
I have 3 biracial kids with kinky curly hair. first, I just want to say that my son's hair was soft and curly before his first hair cut. Once his hair got cut, it grew back like his dad's (his dad is black). So i really reget cutting it, becuase it totally changed the texture.
Anyway - my daughters get compliments everywhere we go for their beautiful hair. My secret is soooo easy!! It's took me a few years to figure this out, but I am glad I did. I take an empty spray bottle and squeeze about 3 tablespoons of regular conditioner in it (my kids like the ones that smell good) I fill it the rest of the way up with water. I spray their hair until it's really wet. The brush glides through it and it dries just gorgeous! Don't rinse it out just let it air dry.

As an interacial woman and hairstylist if you're having problems with tangling due to curliness the only permanent solution would be to get their hair straightened which I wouldnt suggest. Just for Me and Mizani for kids both have excellent product lines for detangling and moisturizing that you may wanna check out.

Leave the conditioner in her hair, don't wash it out. Also do not wash their hair everyday, it dries it out too much.

My daughter got my husband's hair too :). I use Paul Mitchell Clarifying (the blue one) shampoo to really clean it. Then I use Kear Care Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and Conditioner. When i dry it, I put in Kera Care Essential oil and then do it in sections. When I use the flat iron, I do it in tiny sections and put Kera Care Creme Press before I put the iron on it. I only flat iron it MAYBE once a month. But by doing this for the past few months, her hair is starting to fall down straighter on it's own. She gets it braided normally, but we are trying a new regimin and this is working REALLY well. It's pricey, but works so well. And the whole process (shampoo, condition, dry, and flat iron) takes at least two hours. If she wants it curled too, add another hour to it. The secret is getting the flat iron and curling iron that get REALLY hot and then using the right product to protect the hair from the heat. Other people I'm sure have different suggestions, but after all of the things we tried, these are the products that work best for her :). Good luck!!

I had trouble with my biracial daughter's hair too. None of the products ever helped and only made her hair greasy and her scalp clogged. Then I found www.tightlycurly.com. Made all the difference in the world! Now her curls are perfectly moisturized and bouncy ringlets! I don't use any products specifically for mixed race or black hair. I use a shampoo only on her scalp and only when she gets dirt in her hair (she's a toddler who likes dirt). After the shampoo I use a thinner conditioner to rinse out the rest of the shampoo. Then I put in a handful of Tresemme Smooth and Silky that I got on sale for $2.50/bottle and leave it in. For detangling sessions I mix 1 part of the Tresemme conditioner with 2 parts water and spray on her hair until soaked. Detangle gently, starting with the ends and working toward the roots. A Denman brush works incredibly well for this step and helps define the curls. Good luck!

Hi,
I am an African American mother and I definitely know your plight. As a young girl I used to hate getting my hair combed. The best hair product that I have found that I use on my 4 year old son and I have used on him since he was born is called Soft and Precious. Their shampoos and detangling spray is especially formulated for young ethnic hair. Without harsh chemicals. The detangling spray works much better than Johnson and Johnson and the tangles fall right out. You don't even have to comb it as much. The comb just slides right through and the natural curls are beautiful. You can purchase the products at Walmart, some Kmarts and I've also seen it at walgreens in some states. If you can't find these products at a store near you then you can get it at their website which is: http://www.softandprecious.com the price is reasonable and not costly at all. It is so worth it when you see the end results. You won't need a relaxer or a cut. Another product that my mom says is great is Kinky Curly by Mrs. Jessies. This stuff brings out the curl and gives it moisture. She says that the kind in the jar is a lot easier to use than the spray bottle. Also, remember to keep hair moisturized at all times and sleep with a silk cap at night. This will prevent breakage and allow hair to grow long and beautiful. Hype Hair makes a line of silk rollers that are sold at walmart as well. Give those a try when you want to do curls without the damaging heat. Hope this helps. Happy Styling :o)

I, too, have asked this question on here before. I received so many great suggestions. My daughter is now 2 1/2 and I finally found some products that work great in her hair. I use Kinky Curly conditioner and the Kinky Curly custard. This stuff has worked wonders on my girl's hair. The best part is that it's organic and it is sold at Whole Foods. It smells great, too. I condition her hair every day or every other day and just leave the conditioner in. Her hair is so dry it just eats up the conditioner. While her hair is still wet I put in the custard in sections and then let her hair air dry. Her hair still looks great even after a day of naps and playing in the humid weather outside. Good luck!
