Okay, don't laugh this came from the vet about 30 years ago. Massengill powder mixed stronger than the directions. It really does work, it also fixes skunk odor. Jo (mom of 3 boys 2 dogs and 1cat)

K.,
I have been there and done that. Fabreeze is one good quick fix, but you may have to get new padding for the carpet. Call the local carpet cleaners and see what it would cost for them to do the room and if they can guaruntee the smell will come out. That might save you some time, money and energy as well...

Good Luck

Hi K.,
I have to concur with the folks who recommended Nature's Miracle. I had a cat use one of my spare bedrooms for her own personal pee box years ago and it reeked! I used Natures Miracle in a rental rug cleaner and it did the trick. It worked so well that years later (now) I am able to use that room for a fussy young lady (my 10 year old daughter) who NEVER once complained of cat smell - and you know how bad that can be. Good luck!!

I have five dogs and yes they have incidents where they leave their markings I clean with white vinegar and water. I also use frebrez for dog oders in the air,This seems to keep it away.

Natures Miracle has always worked well for me, the other issue is finding the spots causing the odor, I have used a Black light at night and it worked well. Good Luck

I would try all the suggestions that have already been provided to you. Especially the steam cleaning machines and the use of Nature's Miracle after accidents....however, if after all that and you still have a smell and assuming you have carpets, you may have to replace your carpeting. The problem is that liquids seep from the carpet into the padding and most cleaning that you do any helps the surface, not the padding. After time it gets into the padding and stays there no matter what you do. There are carpet pads that you can buy that have moisture barriers that keep any liquids from staying in the pad, making easier to clean. The reason I know these things is because I own a floor covering store. When I first bought my house about 7 years ago it smelled like dog pee bad.....once I took up the carpets and threw them away and replaced them with new....no more smell....carpets hold smells like that!!!

half a bottle of natures miracle in a rug dr or other steam cleaner works wonders. Just put it in with the cleaning solution. You can also use natures miracle on upholstery, it works really well if you add it to whipped detergent. Basically you take dish soap(or laundry detergent) and equal parts water and whip it with a cake mixer. Once it is an almost hard foam, you work it into the upholstery with a cloth or sponge, let it dry and vacuum it out. I have done this many times and it works really well. there are also these gel based air fresheners that work like a box of baking soda would in the fridge. They "suck" up the odors and also release a scent, we got some at petco, they were in the same aisle as the natures miracle and ours lasted over a month. If your dogs are fairly small, you might want to try using the puppy training pads that encourage them to pee on them and not on anything else, if its not a medical issue like a UTI they are going to keep peeing on those spots no matter what you do. I think natures miracle says it neutralizes the pheromones or something so it discourages repeat marking but I think dogs are more creatures of habit and will just keep going there. I cant imagine having to deal with this and 4 kids! We have just one dog and cat and a toddler and sometimes I forget to feed the 4 legged kids in our busy day! good luck!

Hi Kathis - Well... it's really too late for any carpet in your house. The urine gets in the jute backing and it literally impossible to get out. Even if you got it out to the point where you can't smell it, your dogs can and will take that as a invitation to continue to urinate in that area. (So maybe the're not accident prone, maybe they just smell it and it makes them go.)

Time to redecorate!

The stuff that we used when our dog was training is called Nature's Miracle and it's recommended by everyone. But again, this is more for floors.

My highest reccommendation to you is to seek professional behavioral help with your dogs. Michelle Posage, at Nashua Animal Hospital off Exit 5 in Nashua is a well known expert in dog behaviour and training.

Call her now! And good luck!

I have to tell you that I have 10 cats in my house right now. Of course 7 are little kittens, but they are at the age that they are using the litter box and most of the time they miss. I also have 2 kids that wet the bed. So the oder can be really strong in my small apartment if I don't keep on top of everything. I use a great product called Sol-U-Gaurd. It is from a company called Melaleuca. Melaleuca is a wellness company and all their products are made with all natural ingredients. It has Thyme (the seasoning) in it. Thyme produces an oil that germs can not live on. And it freshens up the place too. Call me at ###-###-#### if you want more information on Melaleuca. I work for a company that helps moms stay home and set up accounts for Melaleuca.

Hi K.
I work at a health food store and we special order a product called "Bac Out" by Biopac for a customer who swears by it. It comes in a spray bottle. You might be able to find it in your local heath food store or the health food section of your local grocery store if it's well stocked. www.bio-pac.com is their website and I believe you can order direct if you can't find it locally.

I use a product called Solumel. Works wonders on all kinds of odors. My husband hates the smell of the house after I have cooked fish, so I only cook fish for myself and when he is not home. I spray Solumel and there is no indication I had fish to eat and NO complaints from him.

Also we have a ferret and it does keep that odor down as well. I have replaced Fabreez with this product, because the product is concentrated, I can make several bottles from it, and it is toxic free, so I know its safe to use around children and my pets.

Hi! You must be a great mom! 4 kids and 2 dogs!

I find just using warm water and white vinegar works wonders. Then, if it is really bad, add baking soda after you spot clean, let dry and vacuum up.

Good luck!

I know this is going to sound crazy and I have never tried it myself but my father swears by baby powder for pet odors...he has even used it on his carpets. He has had ferrets and used it for that odor and if you know ferrets, you know they have a very strong odor! Good luck!
