Help with Detergents for Person with Allergies.

The small of detergent and fabric softener on my clothes and blankets is so over whelming with my allergies and asthma I cough all night long. I can buy scent free detergent and the nurse at my allergists office told me not to even use the unscented fabric softener so what do I do about static in my blankets if I don't use any and is there a detergent that I may prefer to use? I fold clothes all day long and all I can smell is fabric softener and detergent. It's making me sick.

What can I do next?

I suggest Mela Power 6 (detergent) and Mela Soft Fabric Softener. I have severe allergies and these are great.

I have allergies and asthma as well. We use Tide Free and whatever fabric sheets that have zero scent.

The smells don't bother me and I can't stand to be around fragrance so perhaps try it.

Just do not use fabric softener. At all.
Try using Baking Soda in your wash.

all the best,

I was also deathly allergic to fabric softener even the scent free stuff- and I always used Tide free- but still was sensitive, to what I now know were the chemicals- not just the artificial scents.
I now use Mela-power, a naturally derived laundry detergent as well as fabric softener, which I can use, and I have been asthma attack FREE for almost a year! yeah! And I have 2 small children and I can do all of our laundry together as this is that gentile. I also notice a notable difference in my clothes- they look CLEAN when I open the washer- noticeably brighter! This laundry detergent outsells Tide, 2-1 in Taiwan! And I am saving a TON of money from when I used Tide- I now pay about $15.99 for 96 loads of chemical free detergent! ;) Can't beat that! Check it out, and either leave me your info, or msg me and I will help you to get it!

Don't use fabric softener sheets at all.
It leaves a residue on clothes for which the only cure is...more fabric softener. You really don't need it.

It also leaves a residue on the lint filter that clogs it up. The filter may look clear, but if you pour water on it, it will just pool on top and not filter through. Wash the lint filter with soap and water until the water can run through. (Everyone should do this once in a while to prevent dryer fires.)

Just simply stop using it, and your clothes will be fine!

I use Arm and Hammer for sensitive skin and Arm and Hammer dryer sheets. I only use about 1/3 of the dryer sheet and that's enough to stop static.

I have been using Allen's Naturally for years and really love it. I bought a gallon jug at the end of June and still have tons left, so it is very cost effective, too. I bought the pump for it that is set to pump only the exact amount of detergent that you need, so none is wasted, and I never use too much.

Instead of fabric softener sheets, I use the dryer balls you can buy at Amazon or Gaiam or wherever. They are not quite as good as fabric softener, but they are good enough for me!

Vinegar as a fabric softener (really!) or use fabric softener balls. Also consider making your own detergent. Its cheaper than you think and I believe you can make it relatively scent free.

We use whatever "free and clear" detergent is cheapest at the store, and skip the fabric softener altogether. I don't notice a problem with static. I have heard that vinegar added to rinse water will soften clothes, but have not tried it.

Good luck!

I use Norwex detergent and dryer balls. You only use a little and it goes a long way. You only use a tablespoon per load. (Or 1/2 teaspoon if you have a front loader.) The dryer balls work great, too. Check out www.cleanfastandgreen.com. Good luck in your search!

I use the special ALL for people with sensitivities.

The health food stores sell cloths that you put in with your clothes in the dryer that are supposed to take the static out. I tried this but didn't find it as helpful, but it's better than nothing and perhaps there are better brands than the one I used. Good luck.

You can use wool dryer balls. Plenty of people on ETSY sell them. I use Country Save detergent. It's about $13-15 a box, but it lasts us 6 months or so. You can go to their website and find places around you that sell it. It is unscented and free of chemicals. The laundry smells clean, but not scented. It really cleans our cloths well and I highly recommend!!

I use Seventh Generation detergent or Tide Free & Clear because my DD has very sensitive skin. I pick up a pack of lavender dryer bags at Trader Joe's every once in awhile and those aren't irritating (they're just loose lavender in a bag), and smell incredible. Method - which is avail at Target and online - makes a great line of detergents but they're a little pricier. They do go on sale though. And they make the best dryer sheets I've ever smelled. I can't use regular dryer sheets or softener either - I'm too sensitive to it. GL!

Use a dye and perfume free detergent and don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets. I can't stand the smell of scented laundry detergents. I like All free and clear or Costco's Kirkland free and clear.

I don't know if you are near a Whole Foods store, but they have many wonderful natural and organic products that may help. My mom has allergies and a lot of sinus problems. She has been using a detergent from there that has helped a lot. I am sure they probably have fabric softeners too. Their website is www.wholefoodsmarket.com. Hope this helps!

with the detergent, you can use All (the hypoallergenic one). It cleans good and should work for you with the allergies and asthma. They make Eco-max hypoallergenic fabric softener and Seventh Generation Natural fabric softener. Try those.
