My almost 5 y.o. daughter has had chapped lips since this summer and they are only getting worse. The skin around them is red and cracks regularly. I have gone rounds with my dr. about this and she has given me a prescription for hydrocortisone. That works but as soon as I stop it comes back within a day. I have a referal to a dermatologist, but I thik it has more to do w/allergies due to a family history. Any suggestions about what to use on her lips (we have tried Aquaphor, carmex, chap stick) or maybe some foods to cut out until I can get to an allergist.
Thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi there! Since it is around the lips and your daughter is 5 I am wondering if she is eating/drinking things that are acidic... spaghetti sauces and tomato based products, orange juice or any juice for that matter etc... cut out some of the acidic things and if she is drinking them have her drink them from a straw. See if that helps in the meantime. If my son was to eat tomato based products and get them on his cheek or hands etc he would break out and it would look like a huge dry patch of burnt dry skin. He can eat them but has to be super neat and no slurping in the spaghetti noodles! lol

Also, continue with the moisturizing lip balms but try one that is more hypoallergenic- I think the BEe one (not sure of the name) is or it is more natural anyhow. With the weather she is bound to be licking her lips more because of the dryness which will just worsen the problem.

Good luck and let us know what the allergist says! Blessings to you and yours!

It may be an allergy thing. Do you suspect anything? Also my kids went through a time when they would just lick their lips around their mouth a lot and it would be red. But this is a phenomenon that happens in about 2 grade and due to dry conditions/winter time. Since she had it in summer I would put my money on an allergy thing.

J.:
It very well could be an food allergy of some sort since it is around the mouth. A good lip balm, especially during this kind of weather is necessary. I also know of a lip supplement that may help as well. If you would like more information on botanically based products that could help her, let me know. Does she take vitamins as well? I could help you in that area too! Our little ones can be sensitive to so many things, even the body washes or soaps you bathe her with and put on her face. I would suggest things that are chemical and fragrance free. DON'T get any products with mineral oil in them. It will only make matters worse. Email me and I'll be happy to provide more information.

Stay away from any chapsticks with petroleum/synthetic oils in them. These oils are simply barriers to the wind/elements. If you use a natural lip balm like Burt's Bee's or 100% natural chapstick - they contain natural oil's like cocount - then you will be providing moisture. In addition, you will be ensuring that all of those chemicals in the regular chapsticks are not going into her mouth if she is licking her lips.
