Help Us Get over Thrush

My four month old son and I have had thrush on and off for two months....HELP.....I think we have done it all, but maybe you know something I don't. His Dr wants to put him on difican, I can't spell it, Can I get rid of this my self. The RX can cause liver failure and I don't want to go there. I would really like to treat this all natural first, if possible.

What can I do next?

Gentian Violet worked great for my daughter when she had it at 8 months old. It's a little messy but clears thrush right out. You can get it over the counter (I think, it's been a while) in any pharmacy. Here is so more info on how to use it:

That your doctor is recommending Diflucan says that you have tried everything, because this is the last resort to get rid of persistent thrush in babies. www.askdrsears.com is a great site, though. Perhaps there is something from that site you haven't tried yet? Many prescription can have unintended and unwanted side effects. From what I've read about Diflucan, it is a strong antibiotic and is a very effective drug. Liver problems occur in only a small percentage of cases and doctors are required to monitor patients carefully so they can detect signs and symptoms of problems WELL before liver failure can occur. Diflucan is given to nursing babies on a fairly regular basis to deal with persistent thrush. I haven't heard that liver failure or any other liver problems are happening to this population, but perhaps that's because pediatricians are monitoring the babies so closely that the babies are taken off the medication before there are serious problems. Does your pediatrician have any facts and figures about infants who take this drug?

You have come to the right place! I had thrush for NINE months with my daughter...and we tried EVERYTHING over and over, spending over $300 on medications, with no result. And the pain!

This is the key, and it will work: 1 part white vinegar, to 6 parts water. Make up a bottle of it (in an old water bottle, or something--though you need to be sure to label it). Then, keep cotton balls around, or Q-tips, and dip them into the solution and slather them on everything, nipples, your baby's mouth, your baby's hands, anything that comes in contact with the milk. Wash your nursing blouses and bras separately, with some vinegar thrown in. Every time you nurse, wash your nipples in it before AND after nursing. Your baby shouldn't care about the taste, and it won't hurt her at all, even if you take a Q-tip with it and wash off her gums (in case she has white spots on her tongue).

I know it sounds extraordinary, but it works! You will feel relief the first time you use it, and the pain should be completely gone in a few days. Do NOT discontinue using it, though. Keep it up for at least 2-3 weeks, and any time you feel a twinge again, start it up.

I wish you luck. Believe me, if you do this, you will feel better very quickly. And it's the ONLY thing that works (but it's also very inexpensive). You should also tell your pharmacist, and your doctor, because the treatments they have now for thrush simply don't work.

Call me if you need more reassurance it will work, or even if you want to whine (the pain is terrible, I know--I still remember it!). My number is ###-###-####.

Good luck!

Have you tried Gentian Violet? It's the only thing that would get my daughter over thrush when she was nursing-even my pediatrician recommended it over the nasty rx.

I got it at a regular pharmacy-had to ask the pharmacist because they usually keep it behind the counter.

The only downside is that his mouth and your nipples will be purple for awhile lol!

We battled thrush off and on for three months. I finally beat it with gentian violet. Paint the baby's mouth and nurse, or paint your nipples and nurse. Either way you will both be purple, lots of your clothes will be purple, but it will come out after a few washes. Lots of yogurt and acidophilus for you and baby. Open the capsules and put some powder on your finger for baby. Add vinegar to the laundry. Let you nipples have as much sunshine as possible. Good luck. I remember how painful it was.

We had that, too. We kept all nipples, pacis, etc. steralized with a microwave steamer bag (available at babysrus) and made sure to give him the medication after every feeding. initially the doctor told us to just give it to him a certain number of times per day, but the nurse said that it is more effective if you can give the meds to him (and the cream for your nipples) after each feeding. i'm not sure if you are already doing those things -- but that helped for us. have you asked the doctor about taking acidopholus? (a natural ingredient found in yogurt that helps combat yeast). that might help, too.
hang in there!

My best advice for you is acidopholous pills, this will balance the bacteria in your body. Another thing you can do is yogurt. Eating yogurt will help, and putting plain yogurt on your breasts will balance the bacteria in your skin, and if you're experiencing any burning or pain, the yogurt will ease that, too.

Best of luck to you-

the violet stuff worked wonders on both my children and honestly they have to put warnings on anything ...for those with compromised livers and such... for example jonsons baby shampoo contains a poisen learned to cause cancer, however how many 70 year olds only used that on thier kids and they didnt get cancer from shampoo and same with deodorant how long have we used that and have we got skin cancer related to deodorant yet? i dont like medicen much either but if you look what thresh can do to your child if untreated for so long its the same thing liver failer, along with some other things...

I posted your question on another Moms' board & got this response.
<a href="http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T083100.asp&quot;&gt;Gen... Violet</a> and plain yogurt and wash everything in vinegar a lot.
