My friend has been charged for theft less and $500.00 in Hyattsville, Maryland. My friend is looking for a good attorney to help her out of this situation. She wants to know if she can handle these charges without it going on her record. If there are any lawyers on here, the statue is CR.7.104. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I don't know any lawyers in MD....only VA.

Check out Angieslist.org for lawyers.

Also have your friend call the court house and talk with the clerk of the court, while the clerk cannot offer legal advice, they can tell you whether or not the person can handle the charges personally.

One of the rules in our home? Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. She doesn't want it on her record? Maybe she shouldn't have stolen something.

So if your friend DID steal? Do you REALLY want to be associated with a person like that? And IF they did steal - what's going to stop them from stealing from you???

In no way would I handle this on my own. However, I wouldn't be in that situation....good luck!!

Well, if she did do it, she should plead guilty and deal with the consequences and not waste the county's resources and time.
If she was falsely accused can't she get a court appointed attorney?

I don't know any attorneys there, but the fact of the arrest will go on her record. In CA, the entry can only be removed by an order for factual innocence. Basically that says that not only is she not guilty, but she is actually innocent. There is a difference between "not guilty" and "innocent." It would have to be clear from the police report that she was actually innocent and did absolutely nothing illegal. Hard to get. Don't know if Maryland has a similar statutes. Other than that, it will show on her record.

Yeah, this isn't a resource for finding lawyers or legal aid, sorry. She needs to contact a reputable attorney locally. Just have her open up a phone book.

Hi, B.:
Did your friend repair the harm done?

If she/he did, then when you go to court, the judge will
give leniency.

Don't waste money on an attorney. Give that money to the person that the
money was stolen from.
Good luck.
