Hey ladies! I had a can of OFF brand bug repelent. The new kind that goes on feeling dry. Anyway, it leaked on my beauriful dinning room buffet. It destroyed the stain in that area which I will have to deal with. However, does anyone know how to get the stuff off with out further damaging the wood and finish. It just sticks like glue. Thanks for your help!

You might want to try baby oil or some sort of oily wood polish. They always help with sticky stuff and they are very gentle.

I would do as Jan suggested and call OFF. If they don't have any good suggestions you could call an unfinished furniture store for suggestions on making that part of the wood match everything else. If you don't have one in your area you could call "Four Chairs Furniture" at ###-###-####. They are a business in my area with tons of info.

If it were me I would (1) use an orange/oil cleaner to remove the residue. Then (2) use an"Old English" scratch filler oil to make the coloring similar to the rest of the piece. Then (3) top it off with a restoring oil. There is a product called "Feed n Wax" that is wonderful at making wood look like new again. It is hard to find it in stores but I have seen it at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and also online.

Good luck.

I would try Goof Off, but test it on a place of the buffet that isn't seen all the time to make sure it will be okay on the stain. Good luck.

If your buffet has a drawer you can take out or a small door to take off... take it into you local paint store. They can match the stain and give you safe products to strip the damaged area and then reapply the stain.

M.,

STOP, before you do any of these things my husband is a master finisher. When he calls me at lunch today I will ask him what you should do. Be cautious as there can be chemicle reactions that can mess up the finish all together.

I will send you another email as soon as i talk with him. It is about 10 am and he calls around 11.

M., I spoke with my husband. Go get Johnson Paste wax, from a good paint store. take everything off of the top and put the wax over the whole top let it dry for a day if you can than take a cotton rag and buff it out. Put as much muscle into it as you can. if the chemicles did not eat through the finish this should polish it up well for you. If it did eat through it will need to be refininshed. Call Ackerman's & Son's at ###-###-#### and speak with Ron. Tell him Mark Fisher recommened you call him. My husband does not do any side work any more so these guys are some of the best we have found to refer people too. (just to ease your mind my husband has worked on antiques from the 1500's)

If you have any questions you can call me at ###-###-####.

Sounds like a refinishing project! That may not be as exciting to you as it is to me, though. I just refinished a few pieces of furniture in my house and found it quite the fun experience. Anyway... The dining table I just did had to be done for a similar reason as you are having with your buffet. My sister brought over some natural scented oils for making bath salts and put the drippy bottles on my table without any protection. The finish was completely gone in those spots leaving the bare wood. There was no stain on my table, though. Just a natural clear finish. I bought Formby's brand poly and paint stripper from Lowe's and followed the directions on the bottle until all the finish was removed from the entire top of the table. They also have a stain remover if you have to change the color. It worked extremely well, and all I had to do was scrape off the finish with a plastic putty knife (basically a plastic flat surface that was slightly pliable so I didn't gouge the wood). Then I put about 8 coats of Minwax Polycrilic clear coat on top. It looks absolutely beautiful. An incredible difference from the damaged finish before. And I went from start to finish on the table in two days. The Polycrilic only requires 2 hours between coats, so it goes rather quickly. I also refinished a piano bench that did have stain plus a couple of coats of paint on it. I used the same Formby's paint and poly stripper, then I sanded the stain (because it was a red-tone and I wanted brown), stained it with two coats of Minwax stain, then used the same Minwax Polycrilic clear coat. It also looks beautiful. I have never stained, refinished or even painted furniture before. It was a relatively easy process. Just a little time consuming. Hopefully, you won't have to refinish the entire thing. But if you do, just know that it's not as hard as it sounds. I don't have any great suggestions for getting the rest of the OFF off without ruining it even more. Sorry. Good luck!

Try lemon oil. It is awesome stuff, will restore moisture into wood and cleans it. I have a table my dad made before he died and my kids have spilled milk, syrup and lord knows what else on it. I am sure that the repellent may have eaten away some of the finish but more then likely the wood is okay.
Try the lemon oil or even orange oil.
Good luck! :)
