Three years olds can be hard to shepherd into a game. Activities often work well, or simple games like the ones others have mentioned. One activity that my son liked was to make a shakey egg. Take a plastic easter egg, fill with rice or beans, tape or glue shut (parents needed for that) then decorate with stickers. Makes for great hand maracas.

Print some coloring sheets in the Birthday Party theme for coloring. You can have a scavanger hunt - make a sheet with pictures of the items they are going to look for and then hide them in the house or yard - make sure to hide enough so each child can get ONE of each item...
If you tell me the theme of the party I can give you more ideas...

Hi N.! Well, I don't know how well this will work with 3 year olds, but my 3 year old loved it at her older sisters b-day party. If not, an idea for when she is a little older. We do "Freeze Dance". Kind of like Musical Chairs, but they dance and when the music stops, they freeze! You repeat this until the last one is standing. The kids love this! Other than that...the usual, "pin-the-tail" on the whatever your theme is, Simon Says, red light-green light-(good outdoor game)a pull string pinata-(you can tie this to something in the house because they just pull the string one at a time) or a craft always works too! (you can find easy crafts that already have all of the pieces @ the $99 store, Target, Walmart or any craft store). Also, if you are only having girls...they love to have their nails painted & kids make-up to put on. Well, I hope this helps a little! Take care & have fun!

For the house birthday parties I attended this year, having arts & craft tables set up so they can color or paint.
If you want activities, your best bet is to hire somebody to come in who does the bubbles & dancing & singing or balloons. They will have better control of the children than you would. Plus that frees you up to see to the food & parents.
Good Luck. (Honestly, I think Chucke E Cheese is the way to go. It is the cheapest place & it is Vegas for Kids. And they do all the work.)

hi N.,
My sister just threw a Carnival themed birthday for her daughter that turned 2. She had my friend dress up like a clown (spray painted her hair and painted her face) and did face painting. She got a water gun and had them spray little plastic toys to knock them down. There was a big Alhambra water jug that they ad to drop clothespins in and she also got a kid pool and filled it with paper fish attached to a paperclip and had the kids fish with a pole that had a magnet at the end. They won tickets and got to trade them in for prizes. SHe got mostly everything at the few dollar stores in the area. The invitations matched as a carnival theme. I think she found the idea on MarthaStewart.com. They kids loved it. I know that there are more ideas on that website if you want to check it out. Good Luck.

Hi!
My idea was to do a little scavenger hunt outside or in the house. We did a Dora one. I printed out pictures of Dora characters and placed them in different locations, and also put them on a map. The kids had to find each character, and the parents would read where to go next. They basically ran around shouting, "Where's Dora" or "Where's Swiper" when they saw the picture on the map. At the last character they found a goodie bag waiting for them.
