My 2 year old daughter is very constipated. Any one else have this problem? She will be fine for days but then have a really bad day where she goes and stands in the corner and you can't get near her when she is trying to go. I have tried to not give her as much milk and more juice/water. I need a quick fix...it has been a LONG day.

What can I do next?

Hi, did u try MiraLAX? Our GI doc. recommended it for us when my son was constipated. Its gentle so it won't work right after u take it but I think after a few doses. And it is powder so u just put it in her juice. Does she drink alot of apple juice? My son just wants to drink apple juice lately. Then I noticed he didn't go to the bathroom lately & was cranky. He prob. was cranky cause he was in pain. So we have cut down on the apple juice since I think it binds u. Also not getting enough excerise in the winter doesn't help them : ) good luck

I feel your pain. My daughter was "chronically constipated" for a year and a half, starting at 9 months. What this means is that she basically held in her poop. Made no sense to me! Her pediatrician put her on Kondremul, an otc solution. She was on this for well over a year but it wasn't 100% effective. She then saw a new pediatrician and he put her on Miralax, which is now otc. Within a month, she was pooping with regularity and potty trained! My best advice is to nip this problem in the bud. Bananas and rice are very constipating, so avoid those. The more water she drinks, the better. And of course, prunes. I don't know how long your problem has been going on, maybe this is a one time deal? If this is the first time, changes in her diet might do the trick. If it's been going on longer, check with her dr, ask about Miralax.
Best of luck!

My 3 year old was constipated really, really bad when he was about a year old!! I took him to the doctor cause nothing helped.. he had prescribed Miralax (before it was over the counter) and I was putting one teaspoon in his juice or water in the morning time.. and let me tell you it worked wonders!!! Maybe you can try that if nothing else works.

Miralax is an over-the-counter solution, or you can use a suppositry but she'll hate that, it's messy, and it might not work. I'd be more concerned about why she's constipated. If she usually goes every day without a problem don't worry too much though.

Same with my daughter. My pediatrician recommended Glycolax (Rx) but it's now over the counter as "Miralax". Talk with your doctor first...

Technically though - if she doesn't go every day, that's ok. As long as the poop isn't hard. My daughter does the same thing and there's no cause for concern - they grow out of that...

Otherwise, more fiber is good. :)

My son was a big juice drinker and would still get constipated. I would give him prune juice. I would mix it half water just like any other juice. The more constipated he was, the longer it took to work. Eventually I got good at it and we would clear it uo fast. He eventually outgrew it Goodluck.

Add a teaspoon or two of DARK Karo syrup to her juice cup once a day. It can be found in the baking aisle. It is essentially sugar, so won't hurt her. It works by pulling liquid into the intestines as it passes through the body. It has worked for our son.

Try some extra fiber in her diet and some prunes or prune juice. They have fiber supplements that you can just mix into drinks or sprinkle on foods and they are tasteless so they won't even know the difference. And they also have those individually wrapped prunes now (I think they're Sunsweet or something) and they're supposed to be really good. Good luck!

P.S.-I laughed when I read "domestic engineer", it's so true!

Put Molassases in warm water and let her drink it.

Also try letting her eat prunes.. kids love them.. so sweet.

And let her drink and eat in a warm bath...

Then when she tries.. she's like to be stiff with fear of pain or trying to long.. have her sing a song to relax and let it go.. like twinkle little star...

And then once it regulates, watch her fiber intake.. take out any processed foods.. fruits, veggies, whole grains, even sneak in a little Benefiber if you have to.

Good luck!

I too was in that situation with my daughter when she was real young (7 now). Although my daughter had it much worse unfortunately. You may want to talk with her pediatrician about mineral oil. You can put it in her drink and it should help. I did this for my daughter but sometimes it did not work for her but you may have better results. Good luck!

I have no magic cure but here are the ones I know:
- fruit, especially dried fruit
- corn
- exercise -- especially riding a bike or "bicycling" her legs in the air while on her back, like you would do to a baby
- like you said, lots of water and/or juice. Sneak some prune juice in her juice!
Good luck!

My daughter had a problem with constipation as an infant. We were using supositories so frequently, she would start crying when we changed her diapers (even when she wasn't getting a supository). We ended up seeing a specialist, and he suggested Milk of Magnesia. I can't remember the dosage, but it's safe and works great. Ask the pharmacist for dosage, but when it gets really bad, it does the trick without all the heartache. Good luck!

They have a liquid supporitory caled baby lax (sorry if its spelled wrong) and all you have to do is give it a squirt it is much easier than the glycerin ones. You can also try a adding a liitte extra fiber in her diet. Hope this helps.

We had the same problem with my son. So we used to give him a teaspoon of metamucil, in a big sippy cup of his favorite drink. We did this on Sundays, in the morning and waited for the results, during the day. It kept him on track during the week. We would also give him a teaspoon of mineral oil, in a big sippy cup of diluted juice, each day, to keep things moving. If we skipped the treatment, he would wake up at night, usually at two in the morning, screaming in agony; and we would have to do a baby lax on him. We wanted to avoid the problem and pain. He eventually normalized and now has no problems with moving his bowels, at least once a day. Now that he eats fruits and vegetables, things are great (but he is almost 5, so it took a long time to get to this point). Take care.

I could give you a really long and dragged out answer on why, and if you want it let me know, but go to your doctor and ask for glycolax or mirolax. If they tell you it's not for kids, unless she's allergic, demand it. Give her a small amount --less than the dosing amount every morning for 1 or 2 weeks and then again every time there's begining to be a problem for a few days in a row. This should not make stool too loose. It's a powder so you can mix it in juice or sprinkle it on food even. My son was constipated for a long time and this was my gold nugget.

Like I said, if you want the long answer please let me know and I'll explain why this works in more details.

Hi Jodi. My daughter had the same problem for a long time.. she was drinking lots of milk and that was thought be the culprit but still drinks lots... for a while I switched her to Lactaid and soy milk.. now at 4 she drinks 1% milk... she used to strain so hard there was blood on her stool and the poop was so large I dont know how that little girl pushed it out.. she would cry as she pooped and I would say she "delivered a turd"... literally it was painful for her and me to watch... I bought the brand "Little Tummies" stool softener and put a few drops in her drink and she had less of a problem... I also bought vitamins from the health food store that are called "greens for kids", tropical fruit flavored animal shapes, no dyes in them and one a day gives her the greens she is not eating.. (she eats no veggies or fruits).. also prune juice if you can get her to drink it is a QUICK fix but next diaper may be messy... but it works! I also give her yogurt daily so dont know if that helps too.. good luck and hope this info helps!

I am having the same problem. My 2.5 year old daughter will not go for a couple of days, then complain that her belly hurts or that she has to poop, but doesn't. when she finally does, she is trembling from head to toe, pushes something out that would be painful for me and then goes a few more times after that. I dont' know if it was a reaction to being constipated once and so she ignores the signals that she has to go. She doesn't drink a whole lot of milk, is pretty good at fruits, at least, loves cheese, and otherwise, may not drink enough fluids, despite my efforts. Last night she pushed so hard and was so backed up that she vomitted. she vomits easily, but this was the first time b/c of trying to poop. I would love to hear about any other advice you get! good luc,

You might find out what the problem is if you write down everything she's eating for a few weeks and check over what she ate the day before having trouble.
You want to make sure she's getting enough fruits, veggies, and lots of water. To much sugar can be constipating, as can too much cheese and processed/refined foods.
Increasing her whole grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, barley, oats, and decreasing processed foods like bread, pasta, cookies, etc may help.
You can also add a little bit of flax oil to foods which can help stimulate bowel movements- you wouldn't cook with it, but if she's eating something like fish or steamed veggies, you can drizzle a little on top- or blend it in with a smoothie, and it should help. Just a little bit, like a tsp in a big cup of juice or smoothie.
Good luck, that has to be frustrating!

Fiber and water. If the kids are in daycare/school, you can't really dictate what they are fed, but you can add these things at home. Flax has the benefits of both fiber (to push the poo) and minerals. I stir it into my daughter's oatmeal. Doesn't take much, and you don't have the OMG mess you can get with laxatives. Karo syrup also works, as well as apple cider, pears, etc. Avoid items that bind, like dairy, bananas, rice, & apples. My eldest has the same problem, and this seemed to help. I also give her a book or magazine to read in the potty, so she doesn't feel like she has to rush. Best of luck!

I understand how you feel. My son had constipation issues from 9 mos old until almost 3 yrs old. We did a combination of things. We increased his fiber intake by offering high fiber foods (whole wheat bread, brown rice, raisins, all bran crackers, etc). We also increased his water consumption. Adding a small amount of prune juice into his water is very helpful. When all else fails, Miralax always works. You can buy it over the counter at the grocery store. We just add a small amount of it into his milk cup and he drinks it undetected. I usually do this for two-three days. Our pediatrian recommended it.

Hi,

Try Kefir -- it is a drink that is similar to yogurt, only thinner in consistency so it is drinkable. It has plenty of probiotics, which is good for the gut. My favorite brand is "Helios" -- my son & I didn't particularly care for "Lifeway". Get the flavored ones, they are much more pleasant than the plain. My son loves it, actually asks me for it! If ever his stool looks a little hard or he looks like he's straining, a couple of glasses of Kefir during the day does the trick -- the next day he is back to normal. Also, I'm sure you've heard this, but try and keep her hydrated, get her to drink water if you can.

Hope this helps, good luck!

If you need a quick fix, try buying a children's suppository and cutting it in half to help her go. I used to have to do this when my daughter was a newborn/infant and they are safe. I believe I bought Fleet brand. Is this an ongoing issue? If you can figure out that it is not too related to certain food I would give the doctor a call or even try seeing a pediatric surgeon to make sure everything is ok, I made many trips to teh surgeon because of my daughter's constipation and we were able to fix the problem with no surgery thank god! Also, a little mineral oil, maybe a teaspoon, will help her poop, you can mix it with milk or juice, really any drink and it will coat her poop lubricating it so she can push it out easier. I have a baby girl who didnt poop for about three months without a suppository, if you have any more questions feel free to message me :).

Juicy Juice Apple Juice undiluted always helps my daughter as well.
