Help!!!!!!!!! My Daughter Is Biting.

I have a two year old daughter, who has been an absolute angel until this point.....She is currently in a daycare all day and just recently has been having problems. She will be playing with a toy and another kid will come and try to take it away, and in order to keep the toy she will bite, head butt, or pinch the other child. This is clearly not acceptable! The teacher says that it's just a phase and that every kid does it. How do you discipline this and remedy the anger and violence?

What can I do next?

Time outs work great. I try to begin time-out time by sitting w/ the child, a one-sentence explanation like "we don't hit/bite/hurt" and then redirect them to a book or some learning time, so they don't feel isolated from everyone. Esp. at age 2 when they take things a little more sensitively than at 3 or 4. the redirection is always a good idea, with the comment that hurting others is always a no-no. It is just a phase though, seems all 2yos go through it -- i'm waiting for my daughter to hit that stage, she just turned 2 and has yet to grab/bite/hit for a toy, but it does happen to her a lot by her brother or other kids in my care. :) If you are already doing time-outs and they aren't working, then the redirection should work, but have to be consistent either way. good luck

It is a phase. My daughter did this twice, to the same boy at daycare, and once to me. It came out of no where, because she has always been a good kid. I had her apologize to the mom of the boy at daycare, and that mortified her. I explained to her that you hurt her baby, and that is not right, and that you don't hurt your friends. Then when she bit me, I was tempted to bite her back, but explained to her how much that hurt mommy. It never happened after that. Now when she gets frustrated, she points her finger at me or tries to swat me. I then put her in the corner. My best friend said age 2-3.5 is very fun!!!!

This is a really tough situation. I used to think, what is wrong with parents of biters when I had just one kid... now I have three and one of them bit, and I'm still the same mom!!! Now, "that mom" is M E! :) I found Dr. Sears Discipline book helpful and I just added to my need to read list The Active Alert Child... but I havent read it yet and Sears is more likely to mention biting... they have a free websit too... search for Dr. Sears You'll get this figured out. Hang in there. -C.

Yup, it's a phase. My 22 month old granddaughter has been doing that as well over the past couple months. She's finally doing it less frequently. And it IS frustrating. What works? Telling her we don't bite, and redirect her attention usually works, but not always. We've had time outs as well, and even that short little one minute (now approaching a full two minutes) gives her that chance to cool down. I didn't read all of the other posts, but I'm currently reading 1-2-3 Magic, which is evidently highly recommended by other moms on this site, because this is the main source of recommendations.

Hang in there, this will pass!
