this is my first and only child. I don't have anyone to help me. My boyfriend's mom and my mom both died in 2005. We've tried everything to get him to go on the potty chair. Briving him to the cheerio's. He doesn't want anything to do with it. He has gotten on it a couple of times and gone pee in it a couple of times. But most of the time he tells us NO!!!!! I'm sooo frustrated with him. Right now I don't have a job, but I am looking and when I do get a job I do want him to go to preschool but they won't take him because he's in dipers. What can I do??? Any suggestions???

What can I do next?

hi G.! i have potty trained three boys and my youngest was the most challenging. the advice that i give you is try to be patient and positive. i know it is easier said then done because i used to get very frustrated too but that is something i had to really work on because my son picked up on that and he didn't respond well at all. i used to try to read to him while he was on the potty to get his mind off of it and we always made a big deal when he used the potty successfully and like one of the women said to try that video. i have heard that this works from a lot of mothers so good luck and stay strong!

I don't have any boys but have you tried having daddy take him into the potty when he goes to show your son how it's supposed to be done? Sounds crazy a little but it worked for my daughter. I would have her come in there with me and I'd tell her "see, mommy peepee" and she eventually started telling me she had to pee. Also how about a little kid potty of his own? Or for that matter, a stool so he can be like daddy and use the big boy potty. Good luck having your little one potty trained is a blessing!

Dear G., Hang in there! There are worse things than a 3 year old not being potty trained.

Start talking about big boy stuff!!!! Maybe one of the pull-ups have a character that he may like and want to wear.

I even went as far as to start looking at toys and showing him the age appropriate for. Separating baby from big boy. Big boys can go to Chuckie cheese.

I have six children- 3 girls and 3 boys. The earliest boy potty trained was 2 1/2 and the oldest was 4.

Now I do daycare in my home and I do potty train. Persistent, I ask every 15 minutes and I read books,(what does he like) sing songs. Washing hands became a bigger thing than peeing at our house. Special foam soap, a character bottle etc. Boys can stand up sometimes they think its more fun. They never learn to aim so, plan on cleaning the floor, walls, toilet everytime.
Stay calm, a child will feel and sense your frustration. This can cause problems.

I let a little boy pee out side one time and that did it. He never pee'd in his pants again. His mom was not pleased when they were at the college and he pulled his pants down in the court yard and pee'd. Don't give up. Some people say use a video, I guess I would try that. Letting your son pick out big boy underwear might help too. Good Luck B.

My first daughter was 4 years old before she would finally potty train, we also tried all the bribary things, made sure the potty chair was out by us, and nothing helped, finally when she went to headstart and then on to PPI a special preschool program, she seen all the other kids going and she went, I was so excited and couldnt believe that is all it ook to work after all I tried. My son was easier cause he seen Sister doing it, I am not sure how it is going to be with my youngest when its time to potty break her!!

My 2 year old was just potty trained while her sister wasn't potty trained until she was about 3. 2 factors I think helped expedite it: the daycare and her sister (a same sex model). Every 2 hrs they have the kids sit on the potty and then reward them with M&M's if they go. She watches her big sister go and she wants to go too. Maybe yourson can hang around with a kid his age that is already potty trained. They are more accepting of other children's instructions than adults, I think. Another thing we did is buy her cute underwear with her favorite characters on them. I told her we don't want to get _ (insert character's name) dirty.

My triplets hated the potty chairs. They sell a seat that just fits in the regular toilet seat. It also comes with stickers so they can decorate their own potty seat. I am pretty sure it sells for under $10. One of the triplets still uses it.

Have you tryed potty video's? I never have had a problem with my girls, but boys are much harder. My friend Lisa couldn't get her twins on the potty at 3. She bought a video that came with a potty chair, and she couldn't get them off the potty after that. They had little books to read on the potty while taking a number 2. My girls had to play with a doll while going number 2. They needed something to destract them, while sitting and waiting for their bowels to move.

Good luck and God bless...Chrissy

Hi G.! I am not a mom but I have been nannying for almost 10 years and now with that experience and 2 degrees later I have just opened up an in home daycare. I think that the biggest tip on potty training is positive reinforcement! Stickers work great, and so do sticker potty charts. I also think that books that are about potty training are a great tool. Most potty books are board books which also makes them great to use while your son sits on the potty (because they can be easily washed as well). Since he has gone on the potty a couple of other times this may mean that he is ready to start potty training. The best way to literally every two hours ask him to go sit on the potty so that he can get a sticker or put a sticker on his chart. When you first start out you could give him a sticker just for sitting there, and then you could move up and only give him stickers when he actually goes potty.
When you do go back to work if you need childcare I would be more then willing to potty train your son while he was in my care. If you want more information on my childcare go to www.freewebs.com/Nikkis_childcare and if you want more suggestions on potty books email me at ____@____.com and I can give you a short list of some great books.
Hang in there! It will happen soon, it just takes time and patience.
Hope that helps!!!

I have not yet had to deal with this but with others i have learned/ seen what might work....I know this may sound gross but put your little boy in BIG boy underwear if he goes potty in the BIG boy underwear let him sit in it for 5-10 minutes or so to let him see that it doesnt feel good... after that change him and put him on the potty and have him sit there for 5-10 mins. Just be persistant on asking him every 15 minutes if he has to go and put him on it.. i know this sucks and its aggrivating... buy him something like cool stickers that he is really in to or something and if he sits on the potty and DOES go he gets one of his prizes.. someone i know did this to her 3 year old and he was on the potty in about 2 weeks or so and going on his own....good luck

My son turned 3 in march...He didn't even start going until he was 3 1/2 and his day care/preschool took him and said that peer pressure of all the other kids going would help him. They were wonderful! He was very stubbornen, I found asking him to sit on the potty but not pushing it actually made the process better. I've heard boys potty train later and are harder to potty train than girls. My son is still having accidents and is no where close to potty training when it comes to pooping on the potty. I would't worry about it. The more stressed out you get and force him to do so, the longer it will take for him to do so. Stubbornen boys come around, they do. I know, I was in your place not long ago, and one day he started peeing on the potty and we've been in underwear since. You can't force him to do anything he doesn't want to do when it comes to forcing fluids out of his body, as much as you want to be able to do so! Hang in there, relaxe and ignore it....and he'll start doing it! Odd huh?
