Help! My 10 Year Old Daughter Has a Problem with Dandruff!

My 10 year old daughter has had a problem with dandruff since she was five years old. We have tried "special shampoo's" which our hair stylist recommended, this worked for a short time period but now her dandruff is back. She used to have long thick beautiful hair and we thought by cutting her hair short it would help, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

My first question when their is any form of dry skin is are we getting enough water. My son suffered from sever dehydration and one of the warning signs that I missed was the dandruff because he was a boy who's hygeine was that of well... an elementary school boy. he would sort of wash his hair but not get all the soap out etc. I would make sure she is getting enough water and then I would make sure she is getting all the shampoo out of her hair after she showers. If the combination of fluids, the special shampoo's and thorough rinsing doesn't help, then I would see a dermatologist. Also do you have a good water softening system on your house? I have found that having soft water in my showers has worked wonders, because all the junk in the water is not affecting our skin.

My company sells a shampoo for dandruff but it doesn't have any harmful chemicals to irritate her head either. My website is www.livetotalwellness.com/arizona

Hi S.. Congratulations on your baby on the way! :) I just had a baby 5 months ago, and am having so much fun with him. :)
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that my hubby has had issues with dandruff constantly. It's so annoying to him. He started using Arbonne's Intelligence Daily, Self-Adjusting Shampoo with Tea Tree Oil. It utilizes Nanospheres, tea tree and peppermint oils, licorice, rosemary and sage extracts. It has worked wonders for him, and he swears by it.
If you're interested in checking it out, please feel free to visit my website at: www.mandyolsen.myarbonne.com. Hope this helps!
Take care,

As there are many types of skin, the trick is finding a shampoo that agrees with your daughter's head. Most skins react well to shampoos with botanicals and natural oils.
I used to have dandruff too (not very bad, but I had it nonetheless). I found a shampoo that makes my hair feel great- and my skin too. The same company has a shampoo that works great for my 3 1/2 yr old boy too! I'd be happy to tell you about the company and shampoo. M. ____@____.com

I would suggest looking into food sensitivities. It's very common for food sensitivities to manifest in our skin (eczema, dandruff, acne, etc). Does she have any other symptoms like stomach aches, stuffy nose, or headaches etc after eating certain foods? It can be challenging to figure out what foods could be causing it, but at least she's old enough to tell you how she's feeling. If this is new for you and you're interested in getting more information on food sensitivities I'd be happy to share what I know.

Hi S.. Tell you daughter I know how she feels! After my second baby my hair was a mess. Very oily and itchy and it was thinning as well. I finally went to a dermatologist who told me I had a very dry scalp and dandruff. They gave me a prescription drops for my scalp called Fluocinolone Acetonide. It helped with the tenderness immediately. They also gave me a sample of the prescription shampoo called Clobex. This helps too but, the actual prescription was so expensive I couldn't get it. But the sample was enough to jump start to healing.

My dermatologist recommended that I get about 3 over the counter dandruff shampoos and rotate them. I choose Head & Shoulders (which is my favorite and I now use daily), Neutrogena T-Sal (which I switch on and off with the Head & Shoulders) and Nizoral(which is the strongest of the over the counter shampoo - I used it alot at first but now I just use it once every 2-3 weeks to keep hair healthy).

Hope she is feeling better soon!

Hi S.,
I'm a hairstylist. In my experience kids usually don't get all the shampoo rinsed out of their hair. But, if your daughter has had it since she was five then that might not be the case. The dandruff shampoo at the grocery stores actually dry out the scalp. Paul Mitchell and Redkin both have really good dandruff shampoos. Tea tree oil is really good for the scalp. Is her dandruff flaky or waxy? Waxy kind is different. It is usually cradle cap. But, tea tree oil is good for it too. Let us know how things go. You may ask her doctor too. Maybe there is some mineral lacking in her diet.

I am agreeing with KurtandHeidi, it really can be the water pressure and the rinsing. We just moved recently and the water pressure is low at this house and I am starting to have a little bit more dandruff than normal.

I, too, remember trying everything under the sun to get rid of my dandruff. My hair is black, so it was very noticeable. I found that the there was only one type of shampoo that worked for me. I use Head and Shoulders shampoo-the 2 in 1 smooth and silky. It has the blue lid and pink writing and pink swirl on it. I have used this shampoo for the past 13 years and I rarely have a problem with my dandruff. Some things that also help are only washing my hair in the morning and making sure that I blow it dry completely. I hope this helps, it definitely is not a fun problem. Also, even though the shampoo is a 2 in 1, I still use a little conditioner to soften my hair and make it more manageable. I only use the conditioner on the ends of my hair, because if you work it into your scalp you will just make the dandruff worse. (This was a suggestion from a hairstylist many moons ago) Good luck.

I would treat her to a scalp treatment either in a salon or at home to get started. Ulta sells some products for moisturizing you can use. Only shampoo every other day at the most. Daily shampooing will only dry her scalp out more. If her hair is difficult to comb, you can condition daily. Purchase shampoos and condti1oners that are labeled moisturizing. Another treatment is vinegar. After shampooing, rinse and lightly scrub the scalp with vinegar. Avoid the eyes (stings like crazy) and dry hair when done. The smell of vinegar does not go away as long as the hair is wet. good luck

We tried all of the over the counter, and doctor recommended stuff out their, I even have done the over conditioning etc, it would make it worse or my head and hair would still feel dirty.

Try NIOXIN, without a doubt it works. It is actually for people with thinning hair, or are balding, so make sure you get the step 1 cleanser and treatment. This stuff works great. My husband had horribel dandruff from stress almost like psorasis(sp?) I have very thick hair and it works for me to when i start to get build up. If she uses it for a week, you will see a HUGE difference, and then 1 - 2 times per week for maintenance. When using the Treatment, it feels like mouthwashon your head! the best part is if you use both products, your hair doesn't feel dry or brittle.

Not to sound goofy, but I remember my sister had a dandruff concern. Turned out it wasn't dandruff but lazy rinsing. We got a more powerful showerhead and made sure she rinsed vigorously -- bamm!!! No more dandruff.

Is she using hairspray or gel? One of my good friends swears by Arbonne, her 9 year old son STILL had cradle cap BAD and when she started using Arbonne, it cleared it right up. Also there is a company that sells tea tree products, I hear tea tree shampoo works good ( I just can't stand the way some of it smells ) My husband loves it, though. Good luck

Hi S.,

I don't know if you have tried T-Gel or T-Sal they both have worked great for me. They don't smell the greatest but they really work. Ask her doctor too he might have some suggestions.

Hi S.,

Dandruff comes from the inside. It is likely due to yeast overgrowth (Candadiasis), which is a stinker to get rid of. I host group classes on yeast cleanses, if you're interested. I also provide personalize nutritional coaching. Feel free to check out my web site.

I've been there done that with all these recommended products over the counter, from a salon, and from the dermatologist.

The first thing the derm. preaches is: shower in cool water not hot or even warm. Use a space heater in the bathroom to warm the air instead.
(Unfortunately i insist on a hot shower, so i won't follow dr.'s advice.)

None of the products worked. key was to alternate weekly.

I do make my daughter wash (cleanse) her hair with molasses shampoo by Alba before and after the summer to remove products and clorine from her hair.

My son had the same problem. We finally went to a dermatologist and he gave him a special shampoo. He finally is rid of it for good. He uses the shampoo few times and its gone. If and when it returns, he uses it again.

My daughter is 14 and has always had the same problem. I finally went out and bought her Neutragena T Gel. That seems to help. She also washes her hair daily or every other day this seems to help also. Good luck.
