I tried EVERYTHING they say to do to get labor started and nothing worked for me....until I gave up trying. I finally came to peace with the fact she wasn't coming for a while and that's when I went into labor.
So, good luck! Everyone has advice on what will work....

I always scrubbed my kitchen floor on my hands and knees, getting those dirty corners and baseboards really well. I usually was in labor before I was done. Walking is good too, and these days I hear sex is - we were never allowed to do that at the end - worth a try.

Castor oil worked for me. I was almost 41 weeks so there wasn't a risk that I was going to deliver "early". I was soooo tired of being pregnant that I didn't care about the yucky taste, the cramping or the diarrhea from the Castor oil. I went into labor within 10 hours. Good luck!

Someone told me to eat rhubarb pie - I ate a whole one over the course of a few days with my first 2 kids and they were each born a week early...and it tastes good (if you like rhubarb!). Good luck!!

Hi,

Walking worked best for me. I believe sex worked too... near the end. I had bad heart burn so spicy foods was not an option.

Hope this helps.

I'm a labor & delivery nurse.
1st question is, when's your due date? Please don't try anything before 39 weeks. Everybody says their pregnancy has been long, and maybe you've had some issues, but babies born early don't always breathe so well. their lungs aren't always developed....and believe it or not, just a couple of weeks makes a huge difference. my grandson was born at almost 36 weeks (mom had pre-eclampsia, so had to be induced) and he ended up on a ventillator and didn't come home until he was 9 days old.

walking does not put you into labor.

caster oil can....mix 2 Tbsp in orange juice. it will probably start you with loose stools, cramping, etc.

sometimes your doctor or midwife can strip your membranes and it may or may not put you into labor. most patients say that it's a pretty uncomfortable exam.

sex, nipple stimulation can cause contractions. some medications that we use to induce labor are prostiglandins, and semen has prostiglandins in it.

spicy foods seems to be common, but I don't know that it actually does anything.

an enema can put you into labor...similar to the castor oil results (we used to have a doctor who sent patients in for induction by using an enema...and they all went into labor!)

massage therapists are supposed to not massage pregnant women's ankles/lower legs, since there are pressure points there that cause uterine contractions. if you are full-term, they may do it for you. find someone who is certified in pregnancy massage.

if you have any questions, please email me.
good luck!

I was trained in reflexology...
if you can....while sitting in a chair, cross your legs so that your foot is on your other knee...
start at your knee (on the elevated foot) and follow your shin bone down...put your finger and thumb on both sides of it (its a long flat bone).
the point in the arch of your foot, where that bone ends, is the pressure point for your uterus. apply straight in pressure right there...slow and strong...like you are pushing a button in, for a few seconds at a time....
this should stimulate it.
I used to do pedicures at a spa, and we were absolutely not allowed to stimulate this area of the foot on a pregnant lady, for fear of pre-term labor

Just let the baby come when he's ready. I had three overgrown babies, very healthy. My first was born two weeks past the due date, the second was 20 days past, and the youngest one was one week over. Believe me, I was so tired of being pregnant. I tried alot of different things trying to get the baby to decide to be born, but they took their good sweet time. Once they finally did decide to be born, I forgot about just how long those last few weeks were. It was so nice to have healthy babies though. Good luck.

You can try lots of things, but ultimately baby and God decide. However, I bounced on an exercise ball a ton during the final month, walked a bunch, had sex, and took castor oil. My hubby had a week off coming for 4th of July and I told baby he had to be out before the end of the weekend leading up to the holiday. I took castor oil on Friday and went into labor on Sunday. When it's time he will come out, but it is fun trying to make him come out.

sex worked for our last baby.

Stripping the membranes may or may not work. you have to be dialated a little to do it. One of my kids it just made my uterus irritable, and I had work-up contractions, but not real labor that just tired me out. If you are already near labor it can help.

Good Luck, I remember that 'I will be pregnant forever' feeling.

Congrats! I was 9 days over with my second. Talk about torture! By one week over, I was ready to run to the hospital and demand they do something to get this baby out. But my dream was to have a natural birth, and my first baby had to be augmented with pitocin. It did finally happen, and it was a wonderful birth, much shorter than the first. My dream did come true, but I had to wait for it. Here is my advice: when baby is ready, he will come. If baby is not ready nothing you try to do will work very effectively and could cause more pain than progress.

Ok, so you will think I am crazy, but I read some where that you need to tell your baby you are ready for him or her to come. We did that and my 20 month old daughter looked at my belly and said, "baby, come out." I went up the stairs to use the bathroom and my water broke. Worth a shot! Hang in there. The baby will eventually come.

Have your doctor strip your membrains. It will send you right into labor. If they won't do it ask a mid wife to do it. It worked great for me. I had my membrains striped on a Thursday at 2:30 pm and the baby came at 6:34am.
My midwife said, getting rest is the best thing. Walking only tires you out. I have also heard drinking caster oil is yucky but it start labor. You could also massage your achilies heal (space right behind you ankles) it is suppose to contract the uterus- same with nipple stimulation. Google it.

OR just be patient. He will come so sleep while you can.

Have your OB strip your membranes. If they do it good enough (mine caused my butt to cramp on one side briefly!) then it should work! I had mine done in the morning and had my baby that evening.

Godspeed!

I agree with the labor and delivery nurse! I know that the castor oil is a good way to go-- if you can handle the taste! Make sure to take it the right way though, any overdosing of it isn't good. I took just 2 1/2 oz, and went into labor within 12 hours with 2 of my children. My friend took all 4 oz at once, and only managed to clean herself out, and throw up! She was told by her mid wife later (almost 5-6 days later), that she could try again, but slowly this time. She ended up in labor within 12 hours also. She was also past her due date.

Word of caution: the labor could be quick! Especially if you've had children already.

Good luck. If nothing works, then the baby isn't ready to come yet, and God is still working on him/her :)

I know how you feel. It is soooo hard to be sooo pregnant. Both my boys waited 42 weeks. However, keep in mind that your baby know's when it is time. These days we hear alot about how to "get the baby here"... but really the baby knows when it's time. We really need to let him come when he is ready. In any case, because the "deadline" is 42 weeks b4 doc's start to panic, instead of accepting their cocktail of membrane stripping, bag rupturing and pitocin... i took 4 shots of castor oil at 1:00pm and delivered my son at 10:00pm. I am giving you this info assuming you are at least 40 weeks pregnant. :) Good Luck

Personally, I don't think there is much you can do to start labor. You can help it along once it starts, but I don't think you can actually START labor on purpose in a healthy pregnancy (i.e. no reason for bedrest or other such problems). You're just going to have to wait until he decides to come out unless your doctor is willing to induce which I've heard is horrible in comparison with just letting it happen naturally!

Blow jobs. Swallow. Semen contains prostiglandins which can trigger labor under the right circumstances. Said hormones are most easily absorbed through the lining of the gut. I had contraction every time and it only took three times to send me into labor. No complaints from hubby either.
