HELP! I'm a Lousy Cook (:O

We have been trying to eat at home more often. Well, not so much more often really. But healthier at home. And I have come to the conclusion that I have feared for a long time. I am a lousy cook! I have a few recipes that I make well. Unfortunately none of them are very healthy. All I am trying to make is a simple chicken recipe. I have tried several and they just don't turn out very well. I've tried baking, grilling, stovetop, george foreman grill, and rocket grill. None of them are working for me so I've decided that the common denominator is ME. All this to say, does anyone know of a good place to get some instruction. I want to be a mom that can have a nice, healthy dinner on the table for my family. Is there somewhere in the Keller area? I have heard of Central Market having some lessons. Are they good? And I want something practical too. I don't need to know how to bake pheasant or something like that. Please help my starving family! Thank you.

What can I do next?

Central market does have some cooking classes. Never been to one, but hear they are great. As far as cooking goes, I'm not a chef, but with a large extended family I'm always cooking something. If you like I would be more than happy to take some time and give you some recipes and/or run over to Keller and help you out. Im in NRH just on the Keller border. All you need is a little guidence and encouragement! I'd be more than willing to help.

Homemade Gourmet offers very easy meal solutions that taste like you've been slaving away in the kitchen all day. Basically, you add the mix to whatever meat you are cooking, plus dump in the wet ingredients and bake/grill/slow cook. It's really that easy! And it tastes delicious!

My best friend used to be the world's worst cook! She started using Homemade Gourmet mixes and now cooks all sorts of new dishes! Her family has significantly cut down on the number of times they eat out and she's even started throwing her own dinner parties!

I'd be happy to share more about it with you! I can do some one-on-one training with you or I can do a whole class or homeshow for you and your friends & family!

You might also try one of the culinary schools. They might offer beginner classes.

There's a place called Super Suppers in Keller. You sign up for a class and then you go to their website and pick from a list of meals that they will help you prepare. At the end of the class you take each meal home with you to freeze and use as needed. I think it's between $10 and $15 per meal. I believe that it's on Keller Parkway next to Little Caesars. I have not used it myself, but I have heard wonderful things about it. Good Luck!

When cooking edible food...
1. Do you taste your food while you are cooking? If not how do you know what it taste like?
2. Are you cooking 2 fast meaning the temperature of your food is 2 high...this will cause your food to be dry and/or bland, and hard
3. You learn from your mistakes. I messed up and burned a lot of meals before I figured out what not to do when I was left alone in the kitchen, this just comes from practice and not being afraid to try.

You simply need to get in the kitchen more and experiment, my mom was a dietician at a hospital and she would always bring new recipes that they got for me to cook at him. So if the family liked it then she cooked it for work.

Take your time, read the directions and follow the directions, and lower the temperature on the stove.

For seasoning I use a combination of sea salt, onion powder, garlic powder, basle, parsley, black pepper, onion, green onion and celery....when baking always cover with foil and maintain a liquid in the pan.

Use a variety of seasoning for the perfect taste. and you have to taste your food as you are cooking to see if anything extra is needed. Also when the food is really hot the seasoning is not as strong as it will be once the food cools down.

If you burn or stick your food cut a potatoes in half and a onion in half put in a put pour the remaining unstuck or burned food in the new pot (please do not stir stuck food) and continue cooking the potatoes and onion will draw the burnt taste out.

If you use too much salt add a little sugar, if you use too much sugar add a little salt.

I think the biggest problem for people who say they can't cook is PATIENTS...

Good Luck

Super Suppers is not a teaching business, but a place where you prepare meals based on their menus to take home. They are great, and they have everything there for you, but don't think you're going to learn how to cook from them.

I'd go to www.kraftfoods.com They have lots of family friendly recipes, some even healthy, and most importantly they have videos on line that show you how to cook meals.

I noticed a couple of cooking classes at the Roanoke Recreation Center. I didn't really pay attention if they were family friendly meals or fine cuisine. All of their classes are listed online at http://www.roanoketexas.com/ContentTemplate.aspx?MenuID=829

Click on Parks & Recreation, then look at the activity guide for Winter 2007/Spring 2008 to see a listing. You'll see mostly exercise classes, but I know I saw a few cooking classes listed among everything else.
