Help Getting Rid of Cat Urine Smell!

We adopted a kitten about 5 months ago and he has decided to spray and urinate in my daughter's room in this one particular spot on the carpet. I know that's normal for them to do and he has now turned into an outside kitty! I've tried everything to get the smell out. From Baking soda, going over it with the carpet shampooer, vinegar and I even got this special spray that's specifically for getting rid of cat urine smells, but nothing seems to work! It's so bad that I won't even let my daughter's sleep in there and I've had to wash all of their blankets, coats, stuffed animals, etc. because it's made them smell. If anyone has any ideas, please respond! I would greatly appreciate it! oh and also I'd like to try and figure out a way to get rid of it without tearing out the carpet since finances aren't so great here lately!

Try a women's douche to get rid of the smell. My dad gave me that advice once upon a time and it worked.

But to stop the spraying, have you considered the cat might have been in heat? I would recommend getting it spayed/neutered. The only other time I had a problem like that with my cat, she had an UTI. She actually peed on me in my bed. Talk about GROSS!

Hey K.,

I'm sorry your having such a rough time getting that urine smell out. The only thing I can recommend doing is hiring a professional carpet cleaner to come in. My family runs a property management company and we have had rentees have cats and we couldn't get the smell out either. They have professional grade carpet cleaners that aren't strong smelling and can get the stuff out somehow. If interested in using our cleaner person. Just contact me.

Happy New Year

The stuff at the pet stores works, you just have to use ALOT of it. I used to work in property management and one of my maintenance guys used to treat the area and then trowel on common Shellac heavy- it seals the area. Now this does work- I had a spray issue many years back, but you have to do it on the cement or wood area drenched, uh, which means ripping up the carpet............

Nature's Miracle never worked for us but Zero Odor (http://www.zeroodor.com/) does. you have to use quite a bit in order to saturate all the way through the padding. and definitely get the cat neutered, for so many reasons.

good luck!

Hi K.,

I had a little kitten that sprayed near my daughter's bookshelf - not sure why, but he liked that spot for some reason...he has since been neutered and stopped spraying AS much, but I waited a bit too long and he still has a spraying issue, but only on one particular ottoman or my husband's suitcase when he comes back from out of town on business trips...I think foreign smells trigger his 'territory issues.' I could not get the smell out of the ottoman until I got PetZyme from PetSmart - http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754900.
This product is so easy - just spray it on - and leave it. It totally took the smell out...
Also - there's a new Resolve that is for high-traffic areas - http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?id=prod4235&am.... This works a lot better than the regular Resolve - it actually lifts stuff out of the carpet and removes stains, smells, etc....if the cat spray has spread underneath the carpet, this may help lift it out....or one of those Sham Wows from tv...haha. (have not tried that though)
I love my kitty to death now...he is a stinker, but he can't help it - he's still cute and sweet!!
Good luck!!

Hi K.:

I'm not going to tell you anything new, just another endorsement for Nature's Miracle. It is a little expensive, but it does work. We had a cat pee on an old sofa, I just saturated the foam and the cover and let them dry. I would try saturating the carpet with this first, and soaking up the liquid with towels or a shami if you have one. For the real stubborn areas, multiple treatments may be required, but I have found that one treatment works, so long as you get every spot where the urine was.

I have 4 cats and have, unfortunately, needed to use this stuff a lot--usually when introducing a new cat, a current cat gets an attitude problem!

Good luck,
B.

I'm going to endorse several suggestions here, including getting your kitty neutered! Male cats do spray, anywhere and everywhere. It's how they mark their "territory." And PLEASE put in some more effort into box training if you haven't. Most areas have leash laws that apply to cats as well, and if he is found roaming by a cranky neighbor, you could get a ticket. The neighbors behindus just received a ticket for their indoor-outdoor cat, even though George keeps the mice and chimpmunks under control.

I have never tried this on cat urine but Petsmart sells a product called "Nature's Miracle". It worked great for dog urine, and my mom used it on the blankets and things that her dying dog had slept on many years ago. It is worth a shot.

I would look into getting your kitty neutered as well. He is spraying to attract females and to mark his territory. Neutering him is the only way to stop the spraying. If he is neutered, take small trays of food and spread them out wherever he sprays. Cats will not spray where they eat, so this will deter him from spraying there.

Good Luck! I hope some of this helps!

In the pet aisle of walmart (probably other places too) there is a product called "OUT!" You spray it on heavy and let it soak in. then you blot out the excess and let air dry. it helps alot! You may have to treat the area a few times, but it will help. when the weather warms up, you may smell it again a bit as the ground warming up will do that or something! But, it does make a BIG difference. we were renting and had do use it before we got our boy kitty fixed (that will curb the spraying, btw). We still got all of our deposit back even though he had done that all along behind our couch! They didn't notice it, so that must be a good sign that it works pretty well! The bottle is white and has pink, yellow and I think blue or black lettering on the bottle. You can buy refills too if you don't want to keep buying the spray bottle everytime. It also works on kids' stains! Good luck, and be careful w/that outdoor kitty, and make sure you keep him caught up on his shots! You may want to get him fixed anyway if you don't want kittens all over the place! Although, you may never see the mama, but still!

We have a cat that decided to pee all over one of our bedrooms. Nature's Miracle did not help us in this situation. When they saturate the area, it seeps through the carpet into the padding, tack strip, and subflooring. We ended up calling Steven Rice at Power Dry carpet cleaning. He pulled up the carpet, replaced the padding and tack strip where the smell was the strongest, painted the subfloor with Killz and then came back 24 hours later to put new padding and tack down, put the carpet back, and the proceeded to treat the carpet with an enzyme spray cleaner he had. It was the only thing that worked. It's tedious, but it will get the smell out.

Nature's Miracle. You find it in pet stores. It is a liquid that contains biological "things" that will literally eat the components of the urine and therefore remove the smell.

Hi K.,

Have you tried Wisk? I use that and it works after 1-3 washes depending on how depending on how deep the smell has gone into the thing I'm washing. Also, how often do you change the litter box? Sometimes Cats will urinate on stuff because their litter box is not the way the like it. Either its not clean enough for them or it's not the right style for them. Some cats are extremely picky about the type of litter box they have. We have two cats and they are a bit picky about their litter boxes. Also, how long ago did you move into your house? Was it brand new when you bought it? Even if you live in an apartment, the carpet may have had another cat smell on it which is the reason your kitten may be urinating there. Hope this helps you. God Bless.

In addition to Nature's Miracle - if possible, it is a good idea to cut out the pad underneath - I had to do this and luckily the spots were in corners, so I could just pull up the carpet, cut it out and just put some replacement padding down, then put the carpet back down. It was the best thing for us, because when the pad gets the smell in it, it's tough to get out. Plus, I also then got some bleach cleaner to clean the flooring below the pad before I replaced it w/new padding - and let it dry thoroughly. Sounds like a lot of work, but it helped us esp when we had to put our house up for sale and didn't want peepee smells. Good luck!

I highly recommend a product called Urine Off. It is what they use in nursing homes, prisons and vetrinary hospitals. You can pick it up at most carpet or flooring stores or order it direct from the manufacturer. It works faster than Nature's Miracle, which is also a good product but you really have to soak the spot all the way down to the pad and it akes two weeks or more to dry. You may have to pull up the carpet to get at all the area that the cat has sprayed. It really takes time to get rid of it but with either of these two products you should be successful.

Cat urine contains crystals that actually spread when you try to wash them out of carpet. The only effective remedy we've found is to hire Chem Dry to clean the carpet (they don't use water), and include their chemical pet odor and stain remover. It's not cheap, but it's certainly cheaper than new carpet! You can find a Chem Dry rep on the internet. Coupons are often contained in the ValuPak blue coupon mailers. Good luck!

Oy! I have found absolutely NOTHING that helps that. We ended up getting rid of our male cat when we found him spraying all over the house. We had to throw out blankets, clothes, and even one of the kids mattress's that he sprayed on.

We now have 2 more male kittens but we got them neutered by the human society before we even brought them home since I've heard that's the only way to stop the spraying. We haven't had any issues. Is your kitten neutered?

Sorry I couldn't help :( That is an AWFUL smell.

If you have a carpet cleaning machine (I'm not sure if you meant a machine like that or like the foams that go into the carpet when you mentioned the shampooer), fill it with hot water and no cleaning solution. You''ll be suprised at the soap that stays in the carpet because it doesn't usually always come up. Those soap particles can actually hold dirt down there, and even attract it, making it not come up when vacuumed, etc. My husband cleaned carpets for about 6 mo or so and learned all of this, then he brought the new knowledge home. I'll never use another foam-in cleaner that is supposed to come up with the vacuum!

Hi K.,

Have you tried Sol-U-Mel or Tough & Tender it work for me.
My cat is old and she does not always make it to the litter box in time. You just diluted Sol-U-Mel onto the area and then spray with Tough & Tender. Wipe the area with a damp cloth. You can also blend them together. You can get the Sol-U-Mel and Tough & Tender at www.saferisbetter.com/yourwellness.
Good Luck!

Nature's Miracle takes up to two weeks to work. Be careful, because if you use too much, it can leak into a room below or spread the problem. The cat may have urinated on the blankets - for some reason, one of ours does that sometimes or in baskets of laundry. The litter box needs to be really clean. We've had luck with the pine litter.

If you do pull up the carpet, you may need to replace the plywood underneath. For concrete and even new plywood, consider painting with Kilz to reduce odor if the problem is more widespread than you know. Otherwise, replacing the carpet won't make enough difference.

One of my cats won't use a litter box so I let him out every morning. If it is cold or wet, he comes back in quickly. We only have problems now if it is icy. Then he prefers the bathmat which is at least an easier cleaning issue. He does have a problem with a rug in the family room. I have solved this with feliway cat pheromones - a plug in item that looks like an air freshener but the odor is not noticeable. Somehow it calms the cat and prevents the problem. I know for sure that it works because the cat starts creeping around the rug when the liquid has run out and it is time to change it. But it is expensive.

Good luck.

I have had a cat my entire life, and we currently have 3 - including a young male kitten. Male kitties tend to spray if they haven't been neutered - so make sure you get that done. I've also had cats urinate on things out of spite (like when I returned from a long trip or something else that made the cat angry). You have to treat the stain immediately. I've had success with vinegar in the past. However, for stains that have been there a while, I HIGHLY recommend a cleaner called: "Kids N Pets." Get the kind in the bottle - NOT the spray can. It's amazing stuff. We got it when we potty-trained our daughter because we have carpet everywhere. "Kids N Pets" is awesome! For the problem you're describing, I would saturate the stain with full strength "Kids N Pets" and let it sit. The directions say to let it evaporate and the urine odor will be eliminated as the "Kids N Pets" dries. Try it. I also add this cleaner to laundry, and/or pre-wash laundry with it. We buy "Kids N Pets" at our local Target and/or Wal-Mart. It's definitely worth a shot, and it's a lot cheaper than new carpet!

Good luck!

Replace the carpet. For the meantime, cut a hole where the spot is and put a throw rug until you can afford to replace it. You'll thank me for getting rid of the smell!!!

(we actually did this after months of trying different things, wish I had done it first!)
We bought the large bucket of Nature's Miracle and followed directions to the T, twice. No luck.
