Help for a 10 Week Old W/ Stuffy Nose

Please help me, if you can!! My 10 week old son has had a stuffy nose for over a week now. I have been running the humidifier with tea tree oil, using saline drops and aspirating out his nose. His mucus is clear but it seems like there is so much stuck inside that I can't get. It isn't really running, it is just stuffy and he is having trouble breathing which sometimes interferes with his feedings. Of course he is too little to give any medicine to. Does anyone have any other suggestions. The pediatrician said that it is probably allergies and unless it isn't green then there isn't any need for concern or to bring him in.
Thanks
S.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks for your suggestions. I just thought I would let you know what happened. I ended up taking him back to the doc. They tested for RSV which was negative. They did a blood test to see if he has a viral or bacterial infection, which he did not. And his little nose was so stuffy that they brought some kind of machine in and suctioned out is nose. It was like a miniature vacuum. It wasn't very powerful, just enough to get the gunk out...AND IT DID!!! I was so relieved!! After just a couple of days he was like a new kid, finally being able to breath.

Hey, Stace it's me!
Dr. V gave me some D-Hist for Brooklyn's "teething nose" and her nose is almost clear (after two days). I crushed it up and put it in her food--I bet you could do that with his bottle. Maybe you could half the amount? I have some if you want to try.

Vicks makes a vapor rub for babies. Try that, and take him in the bathroom and turn on the shower really hot let it steam up the room and let him sit in the bathroom with it all fogged up. that should loosen it up. its so awful to have to have a tiny one with ick.
good luck

Have you tried Eucalyptus oil instead of tea tree oil? You'll need a carrier oil. I usually mix almond oil with our eucalyptus oil and then rub it on the feet (large pores) and chest and even around the face/nose area. I know it's just that he is stuffy, but you could try all of those areas. Eucalyptus oil opens us up.

With the pollen right now, etc., it could very well be allergies...I have lots of suggestions for allergies, but just don't know about a 10 week old. I haven't had to worry about that this young. But try Eucalyptus oil.

Be careful with the aspirator. Sometimes they can scratch/irrate the lining of the nose and actually cause or worsen the stuffines. Also, I would avoid VapOrub and other things containing camphor. It can cause seizures.
It sounds like you are doing the right things. I've been told that up to two weeks is generally normal for this kind of thing. You may want to try elevating his crib/bassinet mattress by placing a folded blanket under it. Keeping his head elevated might help with drainage. Or, you could see if he'll sleep in his car seat. Hang in there. I hope he gets better soon.

Hoenstly, I'd call the DR back and tell him your child isn't getting any better, what you've been doing at home to help and how it is making it hard for him to eat. You might even want to suggest and RSV test if it hasn't been done already to be on the safe side. Also, even if it is allergies, it can back up his sinuses and can cause a sinus infection and/or ear infections. My son has an ear infection from a cold he caught simply from the change in air coming from vacation at Disney back to SC!!

Good luck!! I hope he feels better soon!!

Hey!!

If you are a nursing mom, you can use your breast milk just like you would saline. I warm it a little, and put some drops in, the plunge them out. Not only does it help with the stuffiness, it is natural and has great immunity properties in case there is some rawness from the drainage. Good luck!

BTW, Breast milk has a lot of uses, scrapes, burns, mosquito bites, pink eye, herpes and cold sores, stuffy noses, earaches, soar throat (only to give the immunity). You can do a search for breast milk uses and see it from a reliable source!!

It sounds like you are doing everything just right, the only other thing I could think of was to try the vapor baby washs it is made by johnson and johnson and is made for infants with colds. It smells similar to vicks vapor rub and seems to help clear up the nasal passages for a while.
Good luck and I hope your little one is better soon!

Run a nice steamy shower, splash eucalyptus oil on the shower walls and take him in with you. He doesn't need to get in the hot water, but the steam and the vapors from the oils might help open up his nose little.
