I work in a dental office and all of our patients that are breastfeeding we have them stop for 24 hrs. We have them pump before their appointment to give to the baby and pump after the appointment for 24 hrs and discard it. I know this sounds like a pain in the butt, but it has been tested and the anesthetic does pass through the breast milk. If you have any real concerns you may want to contact your pediatrition and for a second opinion call your OB's office. They will be able to give you the correct information and if they thik it is safe. From what I understand it will not hurt the baby but it is a drug and there is no studies that state what the effects are. Dentist now do not use Novicaine any more they use a form of it and it is called Lidocaine. There are other numbing medications they can use that don't last as long and they may have less sideffects to the breast milk ask your DR. (mevipevicaine, and Carbocaine, Septocaine) These are a few for you to look into. If you need dental work done it is in your best intrest even if it does effect the breast milk so things do not get worse. In the mouth it is a very dirty place no matter how hard we brush and floss. I hightly recomend getting the work done it will save you pain and money in the long run.

This medicine contains a mixture of 2 local anesthetics ((an-ess-THET-iks)) , lidocaine (LYE-doe-kane) and prilocaine (PRIL-oh-kane) . It is used to produce numbness or loss of feeling before certain painful procedures, such as injections, drawing blood from a vein, or removing small growths (warts, for example) from the skin.

Breast-feeding

Small amounts of lidocaine, and probably of prilocaine also, pass into breast milk. Many medicines that pass into breast milk in small amounts may be used safely while breast-feeding. Mothers who are breast-feeding and who wish to use this medicine should discuss this with their doctor.

What did you have done? How much novacaine, I had two fillings & breastfed about an hour after & they baby was breastfeeding ever 4 hours, no side effects. Call your pediatrician just to be sure but I think if you wait a couple of hours (if you can) the baby will be fine.. They don't give you that much at the dentist.

well your doc should have asked you before you had any work done. as for novicaine it can turn into morphine in breast milk. your best bet is to call your obgyn and ask, if you are worried than call your doctor.

I had work done a couple weeks ago and I asked my endontist and my dentist if it would effect my breastfeeding and they both said no, two separate times. I had to get a lot of Novocaine because I had to have a root canal. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Good Luck!

My Dentist said that it was ok... hmmmmm... do you have a storage of milk? Can you pump and dump for 34 hours, then use up your storage in the meantime? I would cal the La Leche league. You can look up the local league online. If you are in desperate need of milk, e-mail me at ____@____.com.
