Help Choosing a Digital Camera!!!

Ok, first... if you are interested, a lot of ads for the day after Thanksgiving are available already on bfads.net (stands for black friday ads). Someone just emailed me that, and at first I wasn't going to do any shopping because I don't have a lot of money. I do need a new digital camera (mine broke in march, i have been borrowing my dad's but need one of my own). I just remembered that I have had about $200 in Best Buy gift cards that I had been saving up for when I need something big (wasn't going to just buy movies or anything with them). I have had them over a year, and actually forgot I even had them. The nice thing about Best Buy is that they don't charge you after a year or anything like other places... so I decided I would just keep them till I found something good. Well, there are a few good digital camera's in the ad that I am choosing between. I am also planning on buying the 2GB SD card that they have for $30, if I end up with a camera that takes that. I am not worried about getting it cheap, since I do have $200 to spend, I am more concerned about having a good camera that will last and take good pictures. I am down to the Kodak 6.1 Megapixel with 10x optical zoom for $189 or the Nikon Coolpix L3 5.1 MP with 3X optical zoom for $119. I know Nikon is a good camera, and it is cheaper, but the Kodak with 10x zoom can get some really good pictures! I am OBSESSED with taking pictures, I take pictures of everything, and do a lot of printing and uploading online and emailing them. Which would you chose? I am more interested in quality than price... though the Nikon is usually a better camera, and is cheaper. BUT... the quality of pictures I could get out of the Kodak... is that worth the extra money? I have no problem spending it, I just want to make sure it is not being wasted if I choose to buy that one. What does everyone think?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you all for your advice! I just got home from Best Buy, and looked at 4 different cameras, and there was no competition... I am going with the Canon that was recommended!!! The Nikon took HORRIBLE pictures, and was slow. The Kodak camera's took a little bit better pics, but still very slow, and VERY complicated to use! The Cannon will be $219.99, which is more, but it took the pics instantly and had great quality pics, not blurry at all like the other's I tried. I got a great pic of my son with it, in the store, and wish I could have kept it because it was such a good pic. It also does video w/sound. And very simple to use. So for anyone else who may be interested in buying a new camera soon... if you are interested in buying on black friday... This is definitely the best camera for the money at Best Buy that day (actually, it is $199 at Circuit City... but I have giftcards for Best Buy, so I am stuck buying there!) It is usually $300. It is more expensive than I was planning, but I would rather spend a little more for a good camera, than have one that takes bad pictures. That is pointless in buying. Thank you all for your advice!

I have the Kodak P712 and love it! Nikon makes great dSLR's, but I've heard mixed reviews about their point and shoots. I haven't heard anything bad about the newer Kodaks.

Hey J.,
I am a Photographer in Northfield, Mn., specializing in Child/infant photography,(www.ginaledmanphotos.photoreflect.com). I would recommend to you that you find a camera with the least shutter lag (time between when you press the shutter button and when the camera takes the picture). This is the single most important feature when photographing children because 1). they are constantly moving, and if you try to snap a pic and they move even the littlest, you end up with a blurry pic.(try to get your 2 1/2 year old to hold still for 5 seconds and smile, you'll see what I mean). 2). You have the potential to miss some really critical moments. Ex. blowing out birthday candles.
Go to the store and try each camera first. Test the Lag and the Zoom. Also ask to see if any models have an Optical zoom vs. the Digital zoom. Optical gives you sharper results and you have more control.
Don't obsess over the pixel issue. The only difference between a camera with 3.0 pixels vs. 10.0 pixels is the image when you enlarge it. An image can look exactly the same on a 4x6 to an 8x10 with both cameras. You will see a huge difference if you try to enlarge the image larger than an 11x14. The 10.0 pixel camera will have supurb quality up to probably a 24x36 poster size, if not larger. The photo taken with the 3.0 mp camera will look horrible at anything that is bigger that a 11x14 (probably). So if you are not interested in enlarging most of you photos, dont be really concerned about the number of megapixels. Just get something in the middle and you'll be fine.
Focus more on the other options and functions. Also, see if you can find one that lets you control the flash. You should use flash outdoors when it is sunny (I know, it sounds wierd). It is very useful for fill light when your subject is in front of the sun and their faces are very dark. Also helps avoid "raccoon eyes" due to shadows. Normally the camera would tell you it is getting enough light and doesn't need the flash, but if you can override that mode and turn it on, you can get some pictures that you normally wouldn't be able to get.
Hope this helps! If you have any more questions, I am happy to help!

Nikon is the best of the best but I have a Kodak camera and love it, it has the 10X zoom. It also has so many settings on it for things like: snow, landscape, fireworks, etc. I am also obsessed with taking pictures and I am so glad we got this camera!

I've never used a Nikon, but my Mom and best friend both have Kodak and they take excellent pics. I actually like my Mom's camera better than mine and I spent a ton more money on mine.

I have both and Nikon if you spend enough is very good.

Kodak is extremely user friendly and extremely easy to use. I had a kodak digital til Bryana dropped it and broke it. I now use a panasonic digital and hate it.

I would play with both in the store and see which you like the best.

I have a Kodak I do love it for the ease of use and the ease of putting it on the docking station to charge and transfer pics. But I agree with the first person it is a little slow if you want to capture a number of pictures in a row or something movie but I love it.
