Helmet Trouble

My 1 year old son is wearing a helmet for his flat head for about 3 weeks, but is upset because it keeps itching him. I wash him daily, I've been keeping him cool, and rubbing in anti-itch cream. But he's developing a rash on the back of his neck and upper back. He tries scratching the helmet. When I take if off, both hands are scratching behind his ears. When I check on him overnight I see him trying to scratch in his sleep. Sometimes he wakes up screaming - I take off the helmet and again with the scratching. His skin looks fine under his hair. Any advice?

What can I do next?

My son wore a DOC band for 4 months. We were told only to use rubbing alcohol to clean it. Put it on a wash cloth and scrub it once a day.
I was also told not to use any creams on his head. The kids sweat in it no matter what you do, so the creams along with the sweat will break down the skin causing the itching.

I would call the place where you got the band and ask them for help. After 3 weeks your son should not be having a issue with a rash.

Good Luck!

I don't have any experance with this, so I don't know for sure what you can or can't do. But, I would think that just like any helmet you could put a bandana or the links under it.
Something to buffer his skin from the material of the helmet?

Sorry I could not be of more help.

I'm currently researching the DOC band and found this newsgroup...

Seems really active and I'm sure there's a mom out there that can
help!

My son had the DOC band and we were told not to use any lotions or creams on his head. Only clean the helmet with alcohol and make sure his head is completely dry before putting the helmet back on. Talk to the center where you got the helmet and they may be able to adjust it.

My son wore a DOC band from 9-13 mos but didn't have a problem. It could be the hot weather also. I would definitely talk to the people who fit him. There may be a simple fix by shaving it down a bit where it itches.
Good luck.
