I just got a heating blanket and the directions sound like you can wash it GENTLY, but not dry it. Any experience w/this? Should I try and not have to wash it?

What can I do next?

Yes, you disconnect the unit, wash and dry outside of the dryer.

I'm not sure about washing an electric blanket, but I would be more worried about the Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF) given off by the blanket. I recently had to move due to EMF's (the electric supply to the house came in through our bedroom and was giving off large amounts of EMFs) and in my research I found that electric blankets and mattress covers are not safe to use EVER! Especially for children. Also, the only safe place for your electrical to be connected to your house is in the garage or other room that is occupied rarely, like storage.

Agree with Ann. Also, be careful of heating blankets. My husband went to a house fire last week that started with a heating blanket. It just went up in flames. The only reason the man using it woke up was because of the fire alarm...he didn't even feel the heat or smell the smoke.
