good morning mamas. i'm not normally a daytime poster but i have the week off- yay me!

good thing too, because my brother had to move this weekend and GUESS WHO let herself get dehydrated, passed out, and busted up her knee when she fell? that would be me. so i'm laid up on my "vacation" week. that's okay - last time (2 years ago) i took a vacation and didn't make any plans, i spent it visiting my grandfather in the hospital, so i'll take a bruised up knee over that. i am pretty sure it's just bruised - swollen and all kinds of pretty colors, but it's already better so i don't think there's any bone or ligament damage...but i think the universe is telling me something. this never happens when i take time off to go on vacation, only when i take a week off with "nothing" to do lol...

the bad thing was my entire family was there to see it, AND my fall was broken by my 5 year old so he's scarred for life seeing mom collapse like that :( we talked about it though and he seems okay. we bumped heads on the way down but he is physically okay.

and the good thing was, my entire family was there to take care of me, call the EMTs, and my husband has been stellar, stepping up and taking care of our son and me. i am so proud of him.

but in the end it is an exciting story i'm sure will be told and retold countless times in our familiy lol. and really i just feel silly and thoughtless, even though i didn't feel that hot and thought i had been drinking enough water...lesson learned!

anyone else have any exciting war stories from this killer heat? I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S ONLY THE FIRST WEEK OF JULY!!!!!!! technically that all happened in june. it is NOT supposed to be this hot (here) this early. this is like august weather...i'm afraid we're in for a long miserable summer...!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks ladies! yep, it's been over 100 for a couple weeks here, with no end in sight. i don't even remember the last time it rained...

i feel for you all with a/c problems! a couple weeks ago, in this same heat, my car overheated - i had to drive home (a normal 30 minute drive) stopping every couple miles, going about 20 mph, with the windows down and the heater on - i feel your pain! luckily for us, it was a cheap fix. i had the 5 year old and the dog with me - and it took almost 3 hours to get home. i wish i'd had the $ for a tow but we were outside the range for our insurance.

man what a crappy summer so far! i hope we all can stay inside where it's cool and ride this out! good luck to us! :)

Not this year, but last year the A/C went out in my car in the middle of the summer. It was 100+ then too. I would have to bring a spare shirt with me to work so that I could change out of the sweaty one. It was horrible! I wasn't able to get it in for a week. Black leather interior.....ugh!

This year my A/C works, but only through the defrost and floor vents. I don't know what's wrong with it and I hate that I'd have to pay a $90 diagnostic fee plus the cost of repairs when I can manage with it now.

But this is still a million times better than the summer I was pregnant with a less than useful apartment A/C and 100+ temps. Maintenance came out about 10 times and still never got it fixed. I switched apartments that next spring.

100 + degree days are the norm here. Hot days here, are like snow days in Colorado. Totally nothing to be surprised by. Now, snow days here...the whole city shuts down. It's like a ghost town out there. Last summer was pretty hard, I will admit. (You know, the record hottest summer in US history. Yeah, that one.) Our garden even singed up and died! That has NEVER happened. People were literally cooking stuff on the dashboards of their cars. It was even too hot to swim.

Like Bug, we are used to the hot weather and I would take it any day over the cold, snow and ice.

Last week the newscasters were baking cookies, frying eggs and bacon in the SUV's. Don't think I would eat that though,LOL

We are gearing up for another record breaker summer.

And Bug is correct, you see a snowflake and the entire city shuts down. Year before last the students missed over a week of school due to snow. We don't get our cars out of the garage when it snows here.... we wouldn't be able to get out of the driveway anyway! We just camp out inside and stay by the fire.

Ugh. Yesterday got up to 107 here. It's been 100+ for the last 5 days. We only have a window AC unit (although, I am EXTREMELY thankful to have that...I know many people aren't as lucky). In order to keep costs down, we block off all the other rooms so that only our main living area stays nice and cool. It's like sitting in a sauna trying to use the restroom!

When I joined the military, we went to Basic (boot camp) in Texas... at the end June, through July, and into August. Marching for hours, in that heat, wearing full uniforms and carrying packs was MISERABLE!!! We only had one girl in our flight drop from the heat, because we had a very strict water schedule we had to follow. Some guy in our brother flight wound up hospitalized from the heat though. Apparently, *someone* didn't want to drink his water, and took to dumping his canteen on the ground, so he wouldn't have leftover water when we had canteen checks. I hate to imagine what it was like for all the troops sent overseas to hotter climates than ours!

I agree with the miserable part: our utility bill (which includes all services - trash, sewer, water, gas, & electric) hit a new high for us. $500 for one month. It turns out that the issues we were having with our A/C was due to a bad joint at the beginning of the ductwork. I had been commenting to my DH that we needed to check it out/insulate/etc....& he kept blowing me off (typical response). He found the leak yesterday by accident....1 hour before I opened our bill. I'd like to say that I pulled a "told you so", but...naaaah....I wasn't that nice. I do believe I pulled a total verbal asskickin' for, once again, totally ignoring my words/concerns.

Normally, I would have just handled the issue by checking it all out myself. Buuuut this ancient heating/cooling system we have is HIS baby, one that he's put back together many times. I do not go near it, not even to change the filter which is a challenge in itself. :)

Now for the better story: my almost 16yo son left on a Scout biking trip Thurs. afterschool. The plan was 80+ miles, with camping at night. I hated that I was outvoted by the men in the family, & that he went. It was truly a moment of having to place my trust in my son, his fellow Scouts, his leader & the other parent, & in God.

Between Thurs. night & Sat. a.m., the Scouts covered 50 miles in 100+ heat. They rode in the early a.m. & sat out the afternoons/evenings. We had regular check-ins thru the leader & his wife, & we were assured the boys were doing great. Those long afternoons were the hardest for them.

On Sat. a.m., we picked up our son to attend a family reunion. He was o.k., but was thankful to spend the afternoon in the A/C at the church hall. He slept on the way back to Scout Camp, & had a much needed break from the heat. I am soooo thankful that we had previously planned to pick him up for the day!

By 10a.m. Sunday, the Scouts had covered the final leg of the trip: 28 miles in <4 hours. Their reward was a day at the pool & hot wings from a local bar. I am thankful that the boys survived without mishap. I can't wait to see my son....just had a text from him & he's on his way home.

This whole experience was a test of Faith for me. When he left Thurs, I cried...sobbed...on his shoulder. He knew how hard the process was for me, & made sure to keep me updated. Love cell phones & texting! This was also a testament of his drive & passion to succeed at goals. He wants to be a pilot, wants to serve in the military....& this bike trip proved that he is approaching manhood. :)

I am wishing you a speedy recovery & a good week! Thanks for giving me a chance to share. :)

Here in Minnesota, we could hit 100 today. The rest of the week should be in the 90s but could hit 100 again by Thursday. The historical average here is to have a 100 degree day about 3 times in a decade! It's very humid here, too.

I have a little window AC unit that keeps it tolerable in our 1 bedroom apt, but just hope we don't lose our electricity!

I haven't had a heat stroke in a long time, but I do have some funny things that happened to me when I first moved to the heat...
Theres the few times I got into my car and took a drink from a water bottle that had been sitting in my car for hour and spit it right out! Nothing like gulping boiling water, lol.
And then something I find funny is how I would get into my car when I moved here. I would burn my hand opening the door, my legs sitting down and then my hands when I touched the stearing wheel. I'm sure many saw this and thought, what a spaz, whats going on with her as I burned myself and jumped 3 times in less than a min...LOL

I have to be very careful in the heat. When I was a child I would get over heated and have passed out likely close to a dozen times. The first time was in the shower when I was about 4. I can still pass out in the shower if the temperature is too high. The only way I know it's too high is if I start to feel like I'm gonna black out. For me it isn't caused by dehydration. I believe it's related to the humidity.
But I wouldn't live anywhere else but the south, Ironic isn't it.

Anyway the best story I've got from this year is it was 106 with a heat index of 114, FABULOUS !

I personally never passed out from the heat, but I worked at Six Flags in Arlington for three summers (one of them, was the hottest on record up until last year), and believe me, we saw it a lot. It happened just about every day.

Once it happens to you the first time, I have heard, you are more susceptible in the future, but I don't know first hand, because again, I have not had that experience myself.

My personal favorite hot-summer story was the year the cooling system in my car went out - one part at a time. I would get one part fixed, just to have another part break a few days later. By the end of the summer, I had replaced everything but the grill and the actual fan itself. One way to draw heat of of the engine, by the way? Turn on the heater of the car. So there I was, in 100 degree+ heat, driving around with the hood popped, and the heater on. It was a great summer.

I'm from Phoenix AZ so I'm used to the 115 degree weather! I've let myself go a little to long without water too! I was at a concert once and woke up in the first aid tent...I was sooooo embarrassed!

Poor Momma!

I'm glad you're feeling better!

It's been 106'F here for several days now. Ick. I stay indoors as much as I can, and drink LOTS of water if I'm going out.

I've also had a heat injury in the past. Just wanted to say: Be extra careful from here on out....you'll be more suceptible to having heat injuries in the future now that you've had one.

I'm in AZ and its consistantly 110+ here all summer. I don't have any heat stories because we don't go out in it! LOL! We are either in the house in the a/c or in the pool when its shaded.

I hope you still enjoy your time off. At least you'll get lots of rest which is the point of a vacation anyway! =)

Awww! You poor thing! I feel sad for you and your son.. I hope you both heal up very quickly!

We have been having 95+ degree days here for over a week. Bad storms Friday night caused hundreds of thousands in the MD/DC/VA area to lose power. Ours was off from Friday at 10:30pm until about 6 this morning. Not fun with a 3 year old and a 4 month old! Lots of pool time during the day, but the nights are very hard with no AC, no way to cook, no TV, etc. Everything in our fridge/freezer will need to be thrown out today, so I have a big expensive shopping trip in my future!

I'm glad you're going to be all right! Well... here in Colorado the heat has been a disaster. We don't often get into the high 90s, but we've had days and days of it. Half an hour south of us, one city has had ten or eleven days of 100+ weather. The combination of the high temperatures, the extremely low humidity (we've been in drought mode for a couple of years), and the winds gave us... the Waldo Canyon fire. I'd say that's a war story. The war isn't over yet, either.
