Heart Murmer

Try not to worry, as many people have heart murmurs that have absolutely no ill effect on their health or long term negative effects on their heart. It should be checked out though. I made the mistake of researching my 9 yr. old sons irregular heart rythm on-line prior to taking him to the Pediatric Cardiologist and had myself in tears. I worried for weeks before his appointment. At his appointment (after some testing) we were told he does have an irregular rythm, but not to worry it won't have any negative long term effects. Hello. I wouldn't worry. If it was seriously major, I would think that they would have found it by now seeing how she is 3-years-old now. I have a heart murmur and I am fine. I had an EEG during 2nd grade, an EKG in 7th, and a regular check-up with a cardiologist when I was pregnant with my first child. All are okay. The sound was pronounced, but there is no major defect. Usually, a heart murmur is from either the mitral valve or bicuspid valve in the heart either not closing all the way or sliding backwards a bit with each beat. When it does this, a little blood escapes and that is the "extra" sound heard when listening with a stethoscope. Sometimes it will go away with growing and sometimes it will be there all the child's life. My peditrician thought I would grow out of it but i didn't. However, there's nothing wrong with me. They just said that I might get tired a little faster than other children when playing sports. I wouldn't worry.

hope this helps, I have been told by dr. since I was little I have a slight heart murmur and I have never ever ever had any issue with it. I am completely normal activity - no meds - no special dentist anything. so no worries on your part are needed :)

My 1yr old daughter was born with a heart defect that sounds like a murmer...it's very minor, and causes her no problems at all.

My daughter, one of my triplets, was diagnosed with a heart murmur at 18 months. We went and saw the heart specialist at Toledo Hospital. He was wonderful with Isabella and very clear with me when he told me in my terms exactly what it was. Isabella is now almost 6 and still has her murmur and is the most active of my 4 children. We go back to the heart specailist every 2 yrs for him to check if it is still there. It is causing her no problems so we are leaving it. The only thing is that when she goes to the dentist she has to have a large dose of antibiotics because when they clean your teeth the plaque that is swallowed will go to the weakest part of your body which with someone with a heart murmur would be their heart. I am sure all will be fine. Dr Suarez (sp?) is who we see in Toledo. He is wonderful.

I have a heart murmer... so does my sister. I don't have to take anything to go to the dentist. Every few years I get a echo cardiogram. Honestly it means I have an irregular heart beat. So you could say that I live life to my own drum..

When me and my younger brother was younger they heard heart murmers on both of us but we ended up growing out of it. Now my oldest daughter .... she at the age of 3 yrs they heard one. Of course they sent her to a specialist in saginaw, MI. He did the usually test... ultrasound came back with there being a hole in her heart. Alot of kids r born with holes but they usually close up by the age of 6 years. So she had to go back once every year until she turned six. It was then we decided to have a heart cath done up thru her leg to put a device (it looked like a copper scratch pad) into the hole to close the hole up. She was just perfectly normal. She was the typical 6 year old that loved to play soccer and loved running as much as possible. She still is very active at the age 9. The only reason we filled the hole was for the future. See he explained it this way to me. Ur heart is a muscle. Like any muscle when it is worked hard there is a chance of it became larger. When there is a defect in the heart it makes the heart work harder just like a muscle does when u lift weights. If a heart is enlarged there is more of a chance for that person to have a heart attack or stroke when they get older. So we did it to prevent any thing from happening even though she was perfectly fine when she was 6 years old. The only other thing she was having problems with was waking up with chest pains because she wasn't gettin enough oxygen at night time. Her tonsils were huge so they took them out. She snored soooooooo bad lol My suggestion would be make sure that if something does come out of the appointment .... make sure to ask about the future. What could be the out come of things. Alot of people don't think surgery for a kid is right if there is nothing wrong but u have to go sometimes with the what ifs. Good luck and let us know what happens

A murmur was detected on my son's heart 12 hours after he was born. On the next day his blood pressure was taken on all limbs and he was given an ECG. These tests came back normal. Then on his 4th day, he saw a specialist. Again he was given an ECG and an Ultrasound was completed. The end diagnose was a benign murmur. After discussing this with some friends, I found out that this is not all that uncommon. I wish I knew about this prior to be diagnosed and I would not have been so freaked out when I was first told about it. Now my son is almost 3 months old and the murmur can hardly be heard.

I have a heart murmur. It was diagnosed when I was 21, but it was there since birth. A heart murmur is anything "extra" that the doctors hear when they listen to your heart. There is a VERY high likelihood that it is nothing. I had to have an echocardiogram (basically an ultrasound) to make sure that there was nothing structurally wrong and that everything was functioning correctly. My murmur is basically a vein that is twisted like a corkscrew on a roller coaster. When they listen to the heart, they can hear the blood whoosh instead of just going through.

It is nothing, just an irregularity. I don't need to take antibiotics or anything for the dentist. My dad actually has one too.

My daughter is now 7, but when she was 3 or 4 her Ped detected a heart Murmur too. It was a particular type of murmur, I can't remember the name for it, and he said it was nothing to worry about, that she wuld grow out of it, and by the next year it was gone. It is still a good idea to have a cardiologist check it out if your Ped has any concern though, and for your peace of mind too. I would ask the Dr what type of Murmur it is, if there are any meds. that should be avoided because of it, if she will need to take special precautions when having Dental Work done, and if this is something she will grow out of or not.
