Hearburn Relief During Pregnancy

Before I found out I was pregnant two weeks ago I was taking the generic form of Prilosec everyday. I have stopped taking that, but my heartburn/acid reflux is so, so bad now. Some nights, like tonight, I could cry it hurts so bad. My OB has told me I can chew some Tums...but I have such bad acid reflux those have never helped me. With my last pregnancy sucking on hard cinnamon candy helped me but this time it just makes it worse. I can't even drink water.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I kept a bottle of Mylanta (or was it Maalox?) next to my bed, peppermint flavored. it was so bad I had to sleep sitting up, but that liquid was more soothing than Tums.

I have Barrett's Esophagus (gives horrible heartburn all of the time), and I am on generic protonix as nothing else helps. I would ask your OB or family doc to write you a prescription for them. My generics only cost me $8 through insurance, so it is cheaper than Prilosec (what I used to take as well but was told is not safe during pregnancy), and has worked so well, I plan to use it after I deliver too! You can also take Pepcid chewables for fast-acting relief. Good luck!

My OB/GYN had me use Zantac 150 when I had extreme heartburn with my second and third pregnancies. It worked great and I felt so much better! I hope you find something that works because heartburn is the worst!!!

with my last 2 daughters I was on bedrest and my heartburn was so bad I was drinking Maalox like water. With my last daughter I was put in the trendelenburg (sp?) position - basically feet raised up high and head lowered down (think upside down LOL) in the hospital, while on Magnesium Sulfate (yes she was a 'brat' trying to come early LOL) and while on that the ONLY things I was allowed to ingest was my Maalox and ice chips.

Go with the Maalox - if that doesn't work ask your OB for a Zantac script

Good Luck

I took Prilosec during pregnancy and it was great! My husband is a pharmacist and I just asked him again if it was okay and he said it was, but then he said, oh wait, it might not be safe in all trimesters. So, I know that isn't much help, but I would ask your local pharmacist for a better answer. (my husband is only dealing with specialty drugs now and sometimes forgets the "everyday" stuff) I took it during the 3rd trimester, it was the only time I had heartburn, but I'd look into it if you already know it works for you.

take Zantac, you can find it at any grocery, GNC, or Walmart. I took it when I was pregnant with both my kids because i had really bad acid reflux and heartburn. That was the only thing that helped. I took it twice a day. Once in the morning and once before I went to bed. And the drs said it's ok to take.

I'm surprised at the several posters who said that they ate peppermints for relief. My doctor (and things I have read, as well) say that peppermint makes it worse. It can settle an upset stomach, but as for heartburn/reflux: it is a relaxer...so it relaxes the muscles that are supposed to close that opening to keep the acid where it belongs. When that muscle is too relaxed..you get MORE reflux...hence peppermint=bad. :/

I would opt for the Zantac, personally.

Try vanilla Haagen Daz. I know it sounds weird, but that's what my midwives recommended and it helped.
