So my twin 8yr old daughters have head lice. This is the first time dealing with this. All I can say is YUK! Anyway, we did the Rit last night, and did the mayo on the head with a plastic bag overnite, and vinegar rinse. There are still a ton of eggs in there hair. Any other remedies that have worked better and faster?

I am in the process of washing all bedding, throwing pillows /stuffed animal in the dryer, vacumming, and considering some of those flea bombs for the house.

I have also been using the lice comb, and was considering get the electric one ( ROBI), anyone try that, or I have heard that the cat flea combs work better.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the replys. I did go and buy the robi electric comb as well as a lice comb. The electric one only detects the live louse. My girls heads were relatively free of the live ones, and now I am concentrating on removing the eggs. I have tea tree oil shampoo, and I have used the tea tree oil in the past for my dry scalp. I hope to be lice free soon, and will check there hair on a regular basis. I did hear that using hair product, and using hair dryer and curling irons makes you less suseptible to lice.

i read that coconut oil or denorex shampoo works. You can go to www.earthclinic.com & go to the ailments tab then look under lice. There are remedies along with testimonies. I wish you well.

For goodness sake, go to headlice.org and follow the instructions there. Do not use pesticides on your children. The lice are getting used to the chemicals and they just don't work well and you are putting poison on the children's skin and letting it soak in.

It is extremely hard to break the old wives tales that go around so please trust the experts.

After fighting a multi-month battle last year with lice on my two girls, I think I have tried pretty much everything. Rid/Nix didn't do a thing. I would comb live lice out after religiously following the directions with that stuff. I had an electric comb. Did ok, not great. Tea tree oil, didn't do a thing. Clean scalp v. dirty scalp. Didn't matter. My daughter who had been in a dance recital and had stiff hair from all the gel and hairspray in her scalp, still had live lice.

What did work-surprisingly-mouthwash and vinegar. The alcohol in the mouthwash killed the live lice. The vinegar helped separate the nits from the hair strands. I doused their heads in mouthwash-cheap dollar store works just fine as long as it has alcohol in it. Let it sit for 30 minutes with a shower cap on so it didn't run into their eyes. Rinsed it off with vinegar. Combed and removed nits (MUST DO THIS). Then shampooed and rinsed. I did this every couple of days as it's not toxic like the Rid/Nix. I also got a good metal toothed lice comb. Don't use the plastic ones, they don't work. I also combed their hair looking for nits everyday. It took about two weeks once we started this before they were all gone.

Lice can only live off the body for about 24 hours so I would only focus on those areas where the kids' heads had been the day before. Pillows/stuffed animals don't have to be bagged, just removed for a couple of days to allow the lice to die.

My biggest problem was making sure that both girls' heads were clean. My youngest would throw a fit when I combed her hair so I would miss nits. She would then reinfect her sister. So consistency is a good thing!

Oh my, I went through this just a couple of months ago with my 5 year old.

I used Rid, and Nix...The lice walked around like they had a day at the spa.

I use olive oil with tea tree oil (15 drops Tea Tree oil for every 2 Tablespoons of olive oil) with moderate success.

Interestingly, what worked the best was LiceMD. It also came with an excellent comb. Now, it is messy, gloppy stuff. I reccomend doing it in the bathroom or outside. But it works quite well, and it doesn't have pesticides in it.

The eggs, after you have combed through, you just have to pick off the ones left behind. My son's hair was not long, but not short either. It took me two hours to go through his hair. everytime we found one, we would sing "Another one bites the dust, Yeah!"

You do not need to bomb you house. Best of luck to you.

Well the lice combs dont really work as well. You should try baby oil in the hair 8-10 hours and it'll work like a charm.

I think the only way to get rid of the eggs are to pick them off one at a time and smash them between you nails to make sure they are dead. After you are lice-free, I would go to whole foods and buy a product called Tea Tree oil and add a little bit to a bottle of leave in hair conditioner and spray their heads with the solution every other day or so (especially if you are going to a public place). Lice don't like the scent of the oil and will not jump on thier head. Whole Foods also has lice shampoo and conditioner (much easier on the scalp).

I hear it's extremely hard to get rid of them in the house and I dont think fela boms will help. They need to eat so the best thing to do is go on vacation for a week and leave the house be. they will die off without any food (heads to bite).

They are also attracted to clean heads, so the more product you put in your daughters hairs, the less chance that they will get lice in the future (the combination of tree tea oil and leave in hair conditioner works wonderful).

The only way to get the eggs out is to take a few hours and sit with them and pull each and every one out. That is really the only way to remove them all. I know it takes a long time, but section the hair and get to work. No comb is going to get each and every one out.

The best thing you can do is litterally pick out each and every nit day after day for a week. My son had it and I did olive oil on his head at night w/ a shower cap. Then every night would nit-pick.
Now I know there are places in & around Chicago that will do all the work for you (some will even come & delouse your house). Just do a google search. It's expensive but worth it if you can afford to have someone else do the picking especially if your girls complain. If you don't pick out each and every nit and only use the comb, it will take a long while and multiple treatments of RID to get rid of them. The treatment only kills the lice. My sister in law didn't do the nit-picking and it took her months to get rid of it by continuously using the shampoo treatments.

L.,
You can also use olive oil on the scalp. As far allthe soft things if you put them in a black garbage bags for 22 days then take them out and can also do this with extra clothing instead of washing everything in hot and in the dryer on high. Also remember lice only likes clean hair. Good luck!

tea tree oil is great, and so is the electric comb because the oil stinks lol. my nieces battled it for months because we couldn't figure out where they would keep reappearing from last year. turns out the girl i was babysitting, her parents failed to believe that she had them. so, she was never treated. ew. they have a spray you can use on couches, beddding, etc, so you don't have to do SO much washing. somethings do need to be washed, yes, but that spray is great. and don't use flea bombs. i don't think they work for it.

Sometimes you have to repeat the rit. The combing can take FOREVER! Sorry you're having to deal with it. I know it's a pain.
