I don't have a child that has complained about this, but I have had this experience myself, in which when I try to go to sleep at night, sometimes I am dizzy when I close my eyes, if that makes any sense at all. It mostly happens if I haven't had enough sleep or if it's been a crazy day and I can't wind down enough to fall asleep. Its not all the time, though, but at least once a month, or when I'm particularly stressed out.
Let me know what happens if you take her to the doctor.

is she on any medication? Medicine with ephedrine like products can have that effect. She may have an inner ear disease something like labyrinthtitus(sp?)or she may be suffering from what is called vertigo when she is dizzy look at her eyes and see if they are moving or shaking.

It does sound like vertigo but something is causing it. Most likely tied to her ears. Definitely see a doctor. Make sure she is not dehydrated. Make sure she is drinking plenty of fluids. Also try benadryl once to see if it will alleviate some of the symptoms until you can have her seen by a doctor. Tinnitis I think also go along with this. SO I wonder if she ever hears light ringing at all. I have had both vertigo and tinnitus and it comes infrequently and I have noticed when I do what I suggested with water and benadryl that it helps. Good luck to u.

Wow, you are a busy Mom! Maybe she has an inner ear imbalance? It is my understanding that can cause dizziness. If it is causing difficulty in her everyday life, and not an occasional thing, I would take her the the pediatrician. In the mean time, I would make sure she has enough water to drink the keep the secretions flowing. Good Luck.

Hi T.. I am just wondering is your daughter over exherting herself? Over heating? What not like that, I used to have the problem when I was little, but I don't remember what ever came of it. I know that I would get really nautious and couldn't sleep because of the head spins. I know that I would get over worked sometimes and get the spells. Also you can get her blood sugar checked. I was told to check my oldest daughters blood sugar level, because she was getting those dizzy spells and she could be diabetic. But nothing came of that either. It was normal and she has been alright since. But to be sure get the blood sugar checked, maybe she's getting too much sugar in her system and oxygen can be low?! Those are just some things to think about and have checked.

I am currently going through this. I had a severe sinus infection and I wasn't even aware I was sick. I kept getting severe dizzy spells, mostly in the evenings, and my ear started hurting like the dickens. I went to a dr. and I had so much fluid in my ear, they were surprised my eardrum hadn't burst. 3 months later, I still have fluid in my ear. It doesn't hurt, but it's slightly uncomfortable at times. Is she having any muffled sounds or heaviness on either side of her face? That's how I knew I had an ear problem. Call her dr and get her ears checked.

Sounds like she has vertigo. I would take her to the doctor and have her checked out for vertigo. If it isn't that have them check her ears and throat- maybe some kind of inner ear infection.

How long does it last? This has happened to me a few times, but aside from the fact that my roommate would say it's because I'm blonde :)...When I work on deep breathing...it goes away. Is she a "chest breather"? Does she take short breaths or long ones? This type of thing alone can make a big difference.

When my clients get dizzy (I'm a personal trainer & posture alignment and pain management specialist) I have them put their arms overhead. This changes blood flow so that it goes to your head faster when you're standing up or sitting down. That's why they tell people to put their head down when they're dizzy besides not wanting them to fall over.

If this continues to be an ongoing thing...I don't mean to alarm you, but I would take her to a heart doctor. Sometimes, when the heart isn't pumping enough blood, it can cause dizziness and fatigue. One of the gals at the gym has a family acquaintence who was in surgery yesterday for exactly the same thing. It took them a long time to figure out why he was so dizzzy all the time, but thank God they did.

I DONT intend to alarm you but if this is NOT a happenstance issue and is ongoing....you need to take action. Hope things are resolved soon.

I have no idea if this may be the case, but when my daughter complained of being dizzy it turned out she had a build up of fluid in her ear and had a temporary hearing loss. This was discovered through a routine hearing test at school (the hearing loss) which led to a visit to an audiologist and then the pediatrician for antibiotics. It took about 3 months to resolve but we haven't had any more problems. At that time, we didn't know she had allergies and she was frequently congested which I think led to the fluid in her ears. She was also prone to ear infections through 3rd grade - when we finally identified allergies.

Hey, I want to applaud you for going back to college right now - you are to be commended. I went back after 3 kids when I was 26. It was a blast and I love it so much!! I went for accounting. Anyway, this dizzyness concerns me - neurological problems can be serious - can you have her cat-scanned. Does your insurance solve such issues. I have been on a product that will not only energize you, but is completely natural and works! My friend said like 3,000 people in the U.S. are getting involved daily - that's how well it works. You might want to try that. Let me know.

Have a wonderful day!

My mom went through something like this and it turned out to be an inner ear infection. She was dizzy and lost her balance. She was kind of paranoid and just knew she had a brain tumor, so she made an appointment with the doctor right away. She found out that most of the time middle or inner ear infections are not painful, but the pressure causes dizziness and loss of equalibrium. I would make an appointment with her pediatrician or family physician just in case.

I would definitely get her to a doctor. Not to be too alarming but if it's happening more at night & she's having trouble sleeping... then I would be worried about fluid in her head or a tumor. It good very well be just an ear infection or fluid in the ears. Does she get a lot of ear infection or have sinus issues? Does she snore? When I was younger & I mentioned that I had headaches at night & still in the morning, they did CT scans right away to check for a tumor. And, I work w/ a girl that was born w/ fluid on her brain & she is completely fine... but she gets dizzy easily, and was worse when she was younger. I don't suspect it would be her eyes if it gets worse when she closes them & she can't sleep. So, once again... I don't want to alarm you but dizziness could definitely be caused by something serious. Let us know how everything goes!

Please make an appointment with your pediatrician. Sounds like she might have vertigo. A great and medically reliable resource for all health questions is Webmd.com. Vertigo has multiple causes, usually a bacterial or viral infection of the inner ear. Of course, it could be any number of things, but your pediatrician should diagnosis it. If the treatment they prescribe doesn't resolve the symptoms completely, get a second opinion and or go to a specialist (pediatric neurologist)

I have been looking for years for an answer to symptoms I had as a child and continued until I was in my mid 20s, and never happened again after that.
It always happened at night, it always happened in conjunction with a weird dream. I would wake suddenly spinning with dizzyness and it would stop more quickly if I flipped over on my stomach. For hours after I couldn't lift my head without being dizzy and I would feel nauseous. I would have to stay in bed, missed school, but by about mid day I would be much better. This would happen about 4 times a year. I was never taken to the doctor for it, but once my mother called him about it and he was puzzled but thought it was related to my stomach.

You have received great advise to get her ears checks for an inner ear problem, MRI for fluid on brain problem, CAT scan for neurological problem. I hope it turns out to be something simple.
My daughter had a fibil seazure and years later developed the dizzyness at night, so we checked out the ears (fine) then she went for a 'sleep-deprived' CAT scan. I stayed up with her all night and built massive lego buildings, then took her for the test in the morning. Thank goodness nothing was found and the dizzyness went away on it's own.

Hi T.,
About six months ago I experienced severe vertigo. It happened when I would turn my head suddenly or when I laid down. I ended up going to my family doctor in tears, I couldn't function. She sent me for a CAT scan and also to the chiropractor. She thought I had crystals in my inner ear that had become dislodged, not an uncommon occurence. For $35 I went to the chiropractor. They did not adjust me but rotated my head very gently and like someone emptying a twisty straw got the crystals to go back in place. I'm no doctor so that's how I describe it. They said it happened because of a jarring of the head or even blowing your nose too hard.
Definitely not saying this is what your child has!!! Doctor trip for sure, but it could be and I would research and talk to a local chiropractic just in case. I was very happy and surprised that it was something simple. Good Luck!!!
