Having Problems Working Out After C-section

Ok, I'm by no means in shape after having my son 6 months ago. I've been eating well but I've had no time to exercise. Last night I finally decided I needed to get it back into the routine and I took a brisk walk with my husband and son (in a jogging stroller). I got my heartbeat up and was twisting a little extra with my steps to work the belly. When I got home I felt great. About an hour later though my ads started hurting around my c-section scar. It almost felt like I had the c-section maybe a week or two ago, that kind of pain/soreness. I went to bed but, this morning it's still a little sore. Not nearly as much as last night but I'm still feeling it when I stand/walk. Is this normal after a c-section? I just find it odd. Any Mom's that have had c-sections that can offer some insight would be greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?

Wow, thanks to everyone for your advice and letting me know I'm not the only one! I'm feeling MUCH better today and I will take it slower as I begin working out again. I really didn't take into consideration that it would still hurt but, this is my first major surgery so I guess it comes with experience! I will look into the surgery girdle some of you mentioned. Sounds like it may help. I just feel like the whole area is SO out of wack and not nearly the same shape it was before the pregnancy and surgery. Thanks to all again, I REALLY appreciate it!

Hi C.,

Honestly, I really didn't have much pain once I started walking again after my c-section. I had my daughter 6mo ago and every now and then I do tend to get some sensitivity where my scar is but nothing like you mentioned. We all heal differently and I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but you should call your Dr. if your having alot of discomfort. Ahhh THE JOY OF MOTHERHOOD lol

I started working out (lightly) 6 wks after my c-section. My dr said that it was important that the incision be fully healed and to keep in mind that you must build your endurance and you may not have a lot of energy for awhile. Mine was painful and my stomach muscles all needed to be "rebuilt" so after I worked out it most certainly did hurt a lot of the times until it got back into shape :) Good Luck! (not too much pain though I wouldnt think, if there is too much pain there may be other medical problems)

I had a c-section with my daughter 3 1/2 years ago and am scheduled for another one in 10 days. My experience was that it really takes about a year for everything to feel completely normal again. If you've done no abs since you were pregnant then chances are they are weak and you are feeling some soreness from them being worked and some tenderness from the incision. I happen to be a Yoga Instructor now so I would recommend you slowley start doing some gentle ab excercises along with your cardio. Just start gentle, maybe a few crunches and then you will be able to do more over time. Hope that helps!

Hi C., I had a friend who found out a product that helped her, Slenderbodies surgical grade body girdle! She wore it everyday and it helped strengthen her midsection and pulled it all back in to close her pre pregnancy self. She found it at a local maternity store she loved for it's clothing, Hip Mama Couture. She bought it and had it altered as she needed. She was raving about it and how it helped her. It doesn't work out for you :) but it could help with the whole process of getting back to your normal self. Doctor's even recomend these to patients. Best of luck, Kelly

Hello C. ,

I have two Boys ( 6 year old & 22 month old ) They were both delivred via c-section , the recovery for both was very good . I can tell you to start exercising you need to take it very slowly( like taking baby steps) . I would suggest to start walking in a phase that is comfortable for you now , and then adding brisk walking to your routine. It will take some time remember it's a major surgery were your stomach muscles are cut & then swed together. It takes time to heal. I use a light to medium girdle that would help you keep your tummy in . I hope you are doing better , Keep me posted .

Hi dear,

I've had 2 c-sections and I came SLOWLY into shape. Take SLOW walks first. Give time for your body to get used to be exercised. It takes time. My son is 4y and my daughter is 2y. One day at a time. It will pay off : )

Take Care,

I had a c-section 9 months ago, and I still feel sore around my incision if I lift or exercise too much in one day. I think it's normal. I'm hoping that in 3 more months I won't get that soreness anymore. I know that's not much help but sometimes it's beneficial just to know that someone else feels the same way! I'll follow your post, let me know what happens.

It is unlikely, but if it continues, ask your doctor about scar tissue. I have a friend that had an issue with this. It's probably not, but you never know. I had a c section too and I started working out after 5 months. I could tell if I went to far too. Good luck and happy walking

I've had 2 c-sections, and although I did not worked out a lot after each, I never had any pain like you described. BUT, it is probably totally normal. If the pain does not go away in a couple of days I'd ck with your doctor or if your instincts tell you something is wrong ck sooner. Since it has been 6 months, I am sure you are totally fine. You should have healed substantially in that amount of time. It has only been 2 months since my last one and I feel like I am 98-99% healed.

Hi C.,

I've had 3 c-sections and my last child is 18 months and my scar is still sensitive. It by no means hurts like you've described but I do know that even after I had my first daughter, my scar was still sensitive up until I had baby number 2 which was 2 and half years later. I think every woman heals differently so don't push yourself through pain. If you feel pain, listen to your body. If you are still concerned, contact your doctor.
