The last two weeks I have really buckled down to lose those "last 10 pounds" that I always complain about but do nothing to fix. I have been steadily losing about a half a pound a day and then out of nowhere I gained 1.5 pounds this morning!! I did not take in any excess salt, no processed food, no hidden calories and I am dead in the middle of my menstrual cycle so I have no idea what happened. In fact I ate BETTER yesterday than I have been. I know they say to weigh only every few days but I am a person who needs to see progress to stay motivated on a daily basis. Needless to say this morning's weigh in was not very motivating :( I am trying hard not to have the "throw in the towel" mentality but it is hard. Has anyone else experienced this while trying to lose weight? I have stalled before in the past but never gained for NO reason. :(

What can I do next?

Its not possible to gain 1.5 lbs of fat in one day. Drink a lot of water today and see what the scales does tomorrow. Water weight can fluctuate. I weigh everyday, fluctuations happen.

Dont let the scale own you.........if you are working out and watching your calorie intake and making sure the calories are from good sources there is nothing you SHOULD be giving up. I promise you look better now that your trying 1.5 lbs or not. With only 10 lbs of extra weight you dont need a scale.

That scale is a little biotch that needs to be put in its place, toss it in the trash.

From morning to night, I gain 3 pounds. Everyday. My Dr. told me drinking a big glass of water and make you gain 2 lbs, until you pee in out of course. Dont be so h*** o* yourself. 1.5 lbs is nothing, I bet its gone tomorrow. You are doing great, keep it up!

From now on.... weigh yourself every sunday.

And yes. For MANY reasons... the most common one being replacing fat with muscle (which weighs more)

My Dr. always told me your weight can fluctuate up to 5 pounds a DAY, with no explanation. Our bodies just hold onto fat sometimes. No big deal.

ALL THE TIME!! :)

Seriously, I weigh myself daily and one day I will be 3 pounds up, then the next 5 pounds down.

No real rhyme or reason, though I always notice I weigh more during my period or when I'm ovulating.

You're supposed to chart your weight if you're going to weigh yourself daily - that way you see the overall trend downwards.

Don't be discouraged. My experience when dieting always seems to be that my weight won't budge, won't budge, won't budge, and then one day I step on the scale and I'm down a pound or two.

This happens all the time.

It happened to me last week and the next day it was gone. NO IDEA HOW OR WHY.

I see this happen on the "Biggest Loser" and can't imagine how it happens when they work-out all day long and eat next to nothing. Mystery of the world I guess.

After about 6-8 weeks... the body, gets used to any exercise routine. So after that, you need to mix it up. Either by intensity or length or type of exercise.
I actually read this, in Prevention magazine, per exercise/fitness experts.

And... don't go only by the scale and your weight.
GO by, the way your clothes fit, and your inches that you lose.
This is a much better indicator, of losing weight.
Because... muscle mass, can actually ADD weight to a person... but meanwhile you are much trimmer and 'skinnier.'

Do NOT, only go by the scale.

I used to work, in the weight loss industry.

And, graze throughout the day. And drink lots of water. Water, helps the metabolism. Too. And flushes out, water retention.

If you only go by your weight on the scale... this is sometimes, defeating.
Because it is not the sole indicator, of success or weight 'loss.'
Some people actually LOOSE muscle mass, while dieting. And this is not good, nor good weight loss. You don't want to loose, muscle mass. Because it is the muscles, that actually promote your calorie burning furnace and fitness, progress.

If you must weigh yourself, do it only once a week. At the same time of day, every once a week. Without clothing.
If you weigh yourself everyday and many times throughout the same day, you will drive yourself, nuts. Because everyday throughout the day, weight WILL fluctuate. It is normal.

Eat healthily.
Eat balanced.
Graze. An apple. A banana. With skim milk. In between meals. For example. Know your portion sizes, too. 1/2 an apple for example, is a portion size of 1 serving. Not the whole apple.
If you starve yourself, your metabolism will slow down too.. and you will lose... muscle mass.

It does happen. Try not to worry about it... this IS why they say not to weigh every day, or even every other day. It feels GREAT on the days that you are dropping, but one flux UP and you want to give it all up. If you only weighed every 4-5 days even (not even a week) you'd more likely average out to still having lost.

Not to be too personal, but did you have BMs yesterday? That might explain a small part of it.

It has something to do with the fluids your body retains - I read somewhere that it's common and range between a pound and 5lbs!!! Stay strong...

Does your "buckling down" include exercise? The only reason I ask is because muscles actually weigh more than fat! What has possibly happened is that (despite what the scale says) you have lost inches rather than weight. Don't your clothes fit more comfortably? Also, the reason why you should only weigh yourself once a week at the same time of day, is due to the fact that it is perfectly normal for our weight to fluctuate by up to 2 pounds! If you really like weighing yourself daily, then make sure you weigh yourself wearing the same clothes (or naked) at the same time of day and plot the weight on a graph. You will see that (even if it sometimes goes up) the graph will keep moving downwards! Another reason for an increase of 1.2 pounds could also be due to constipation (which is a common result of a weight loss diet). Try drinking more water and eating fruit or other foods which have a high fibre content to naturally help in the constipation department. Don't get demotivated - you're right on track! Congratulations on making it this far! May the Force be with you! :)
