Have the Stomach Virus Without All That Comes with It?

My kids have both had some kind of 24-hour stomach bug in the last week… and since about 2 days after the first one my stomach has felt "off" but I have not vomited or had diarrhea. It has been this way for 3-4 days now. It is like my stomach is just very angry and burning a bit but its just kind of festering. I almost feel like if I did puke then I could get rid of the feeling but I don't puke easily (I think I have puked from being sick only 2-3 times ever)… and I obviously don't want to force myself to puke. The kids were completely back to their old selves 24-36 hours later but mine seems to be hanging around (I am guessing because they got theirs "out?") Has this ever happened to anyone?

If I were you, I'd go get your family tested for strep. Sometimes strep causes stomach problems that sound like you are experiencing. Just because the kids feel better doesn't mean that they don't still have it.

This happened to my son when he was preparing for exams at college. When he got home, I took him in for his yearly physical, and I told the doctor about that. It had been a few weeks since he was feeling so bad. The doctor took a strep test and he tested POSITIVE. I was so grateful to this doctor. My son was leaving in a week to be an RA for a group of junior high students for a 3 week academic camp. Can you imagine him carrying strep around all these kids!?

Good luck and feel better soon!

Maybe a mild case? I'd eat light and consider yogurt and see how you feel in a day or so.

We must have the same virus. We just returned from Phoenix and both my son and I came down with a flu. I felt like I was going to vomit for over 24 hours, I was terribly feverish and achy in addition. What's weird is that Aleve did not help with the pain, but Ibuprofen did.

We ate soup and drank tea for over 2 days. Now we have colds.

Take care. Drink fluids.

I have the same thing, going on a week and a half now. It started with my stomach in knots and feeling a little feverish, but no other symtoms. Then it seemed to pass for a day or so. But now, whenever I eat dairy, my stomach is in knots again. I read up on it and it seems like a virus like gastroenteritis can cause a temporary (I hope) lactose intolerance. You might think about cutting dairy if you experience some lingering pain. Hope you feel better! I'm eating broth, soup, small amounts of chicken and veggies, tea, and other small meals to baby my stomach for a while. It's feeling so much better.

ADDED NOTE: Moms, There is NO STOMACH FLU. Influenza is a respiratory illness. It can cause some nausea in touchy people, but if you have an illness that is primarily digestive, please don't call it the flu. That endlessly confuses people. It's gastroenteritis, or possibly even food poisoning.

Original: There are so many varieties of stomach bugs, and each probably brings its own specific "gifts." But I'm with Lumpy – similar degree of illness, same lingering symptoms, crampy, no appetite, mild nausea or diarrhea now and then. A couple of months ago I had a much worse episode, full-on 24-hour everything.

It seems to take a couple of weeks, at least, for my system to settle after a digestive bug. During these slow recoveries I eat VERY careful, small meals, and have to avoid a number of foods that just don't sit well.

My mom and one of my son's just had the same thing. My kids spent the night at my mom's house on Sat night. She had a bad stomachache all night and all day Sunday. She never threw up. On Sunday evening, my son started complaining of the same thing. I sent him to bed, and he was up 2-3 times in the night saying he felt like he needed to throw up, but it was stuck. He was still complaining yesterday morning, so I kept him home from school. He never threw up and by about noon, he was totally fine.
