Hi, My daughter who is now 22 months old is having a hard time pooping (she is otherwise a very good pooper usually twice a day). Last week when she was in the shower she pooped in the shower and it really scared her, I mean she was really upset about the whole thing and I was really trying to keep my cool telling her it's okay and the such but I just couldnt calm her. Since then she hasnt pooped at home. I know for sure that she pooped last Monday and I dont know past that. She pooped at day care on Monday and they couldnt remember if she pooped on Tuesday or Wednesday or not. She is home on Thursdays and Fridays and I know she hasnt pooped then. I gave her some glycerin suppositories which is supposed to get things moving within an hour but alas still no poop. She will start to say pot and hold her butt (she sits on the pot from time to time to pee but never poop) and I noticed that there was a little poop between her cheeks. I think she is holding it in cause she is afraid to poop. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on how I can get her to relax and poop (cause she wont even do it with diapers on). I've been trying to feed her lots of fruits like grapes and plums and drink a lot of water. I think it's a more mental thing right now. any help that you could give would be greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

Thanks a lot to all of you. She did finally poop but she cried and screamed cause it hurt her so much. I will definitely use some of your ideas to keep her poop soft so she doesnt associate pooping with hurting. The bath idea sounds like a really good idea and I think that was what helped her finally poop out what she did. She did poop the next morning on the pot all by herself. so she seems okay with the idea but will try to keep it nice and soft. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, from a very relieved mom.

my son was having very bad tummy aches so we took him to the dr they did an x-ray on his belly and he was so backed up that his intire large intestine was full. the dr said to give him Fletcher's laxative for kids ( i got it at Walgreens) 2x a day and we had to come back in 3 days if he hadn't gone by then they were going to "flush" him out because it was that severe. we gave it to him 2x a day (first dose at night before bedtime as suggested by the ped.)and on the second day he was in the bathroom more than he was out. he liked the taste, it tastes like rootbeer. so its not icky to where they don't like to take it. it also is gentle and it didn't cause any stomach craps for him. i know this doesn't help with the anxiety part of it but this stuff works to where she wont be able to hold it in and will atleast get it out so she doesn't have any problems, bryce was holding it also and they said his intestines could have burst if we didn't get it out of him soon. hopefully if she can't hold it in and see's its not that big of a deal to go when it comes out things will get back to normal for her. after we got the major stuff out we used it once a day for the next two days, then once a week for a month. everything was back to normal for him. hopefully this helps! good luck.

Try giving her a little 'lemon cod liver oil'. You put 1/2 tsp in her juice (orange, apple, lemonade - whatever she likes). She will poop within the next few hours! My mom takes this daily (it is really healthy for you) and she was reading about how good it is supposed to be for kids teeth and to help them poop. One of my twins was having the hardest time learning to poop on the toilet, he would get so nervous and just sit there. I started giving this to him every morning and our issues stopped almost immediately. I think he was always a little constipated. He doesn't even know I put it in his juice. Works great and its 100% natural and healhty.

My daughter has alot of constipation and I what really works for us is I will give her an entire bowl or cup of mandarin oranges, other fruit, fiber, water works but for some reason the mandarin oranges really do the trick.

I did once have to take her in and the doctor prescribed a laxative powder I mixed in with her milk.

As far as getting her comfortable with going #2, you could sit her on the potty and read her a book or sing songs anything to get her happy and relaxed.

My 2-year old daughter is also scared to poop. After trying natural things (like plenty of fiber-rich food and water)and suppositories with no luck, our doctor had put her on a half adult dose of Miralax. The nice things about Miralax is that it is a powder that totally disolves in liquid, so it's not visible when mixed into water or juice(and has no favor either). Unfortunately, that still didn't work for our daughter, so we visited a children's doctor who specializes in constipation issues. She had us try a half dose of Philip's (they do have a kids' version) twice a day (to soften the poop) and a dose of Little Tummy's Laxative Drops twice a day (to push it out). The dr had just said that combo would make it impossible to hold it in anymore (since that was want she was doing). It worked! My daughter has been on that combo (in a lower dose now - quarter dose Philip's once a day; Lax Drops only if needed) for about a month and it has really helped. She doesn't try to hold much anymore. The doctor wanted to keep her on a low dose of these meds for a couple of months so that she doesn't associate poop with being bad anymore. (She had been withholding because of association between poop and pain.) I hope this helps.

All the suggestions from other posters sound good, maybe worth talking to your Ped. When I worked in daycare we would read books like Everybody Poops to kids who were afraid to go on the potty, I know there are a lot of books about going to the bathroom out there, give it try, and good luck!

Poor girl! I would keep her in a warm bath as much as possible. That will help relax her. I would have her sit on the potty after the bath, to see if something will naturally come out after the bath. Good luck!
