Taking my toddler to the dentist for a tooth that is turning gray. Have no idea what happened. If she had trama to the tooth she didn't complain about it. Please share if your child had a tooth that was gray but then returned to normal color.

So What Happened?

Good news! After a week the tooth has turned back to its normal color. I cancelled our dental appointment and was told that this was not an uncommon occurrence-- little one hits the tooth, disrupts blood flow and then it returns to normal much like a bruise on the skin.

Bad news! Now the tooth seems to be turning gray again after about a week and a half. I called the dentist and was told this is probably the color it will stay.

In a little one they would probably cap it. My son had that happen with one of his front teeth. He has bad teeth geans from both sides. Poor kid. Most the kids on my husbands side get caps on many teeth before they start school. And then on both side bad grown up teeth geans. We had them capped at about 3 years old.

My friend's son got in the mouth with a wooden swing. It turned gray, but then a few weeks later was back to its normal color. Her dentist said that sometimes it happens.

My daughter's turned grey as a toddler. She did hit it and the dentist said it was bruised. The grey was blood just like a bruise on someone's skin. It eventually went away but the tooth was always pretty yellow. Better than grey though... And then it fell out eventually! Hopefully your child's is just a bruise too.

I have some experience with this, as I am a dental hygienist. If there has been trauma to the tooth, and it turned grey, then it will never revert back to a white color without an internal bleaching. The dentin inside the tooth is what gives the tooth it's color, and it is living, so if the tooth is grey, the dentin has had it's blood supply compromised, and so won't revert to white.
If the tooth has turned grey for some other reason, (maybe plaque/tartar coating) then it's possible.

Afraid not. My child had one and we had to wait until it fell out. It's like a bruise that never goes away. Everytime she smiled for pictures, she used the closed mouth smile.

My daughter (now 3) was playing w her brother and fell and hit her tooth on the ground. It turned very dark grey. I took her to the dentist when I noticed (3 days after she fell) and he said this is super common w kids this age. She killed the nerves in the tooth by whacking it so hard. He said to watch the gum line for signs of an abcess which will look like a little pea sized bubble/bump. She never got one thank goodness. If she had he would have had to do a root canal. (I think that is what he said). It has been 7 or more months now and her tooth has gradually gotten lighter and lighter. I don't think anyone can really even tell now...except me bc I know which tooth it is. It's almost back to it's normal color.

a gray tooth means that the tooth is dead. It will just get darker and darker. Sorry! WHen I was a kid I fell and hit my front tooth. The tooth died and my tooth turned a really awful color. It was so embaressing! When I was a teen, people would come up and ask me why my tooth was brown! I hated it. Finally about 3 years ago I had a crown put on it and it's SO much better now. I wish I had it done years ago!

My daughter got hit in the mouth with a small toy train by another child. Her front tooth started to turn gray, which is a bruised tooth that could heal gradually or turn darker and the tooth will die which will require dental care. Her tooth healed and is not noticeable anymore thank God. Her tooth was not a really dark gray though.

No, sorry. The experience I have is with a friend in college who had a gray tooth that he damaged after his permanent tooth came in and had to have it fixed as an adult. It never healed on its own.

I wish I had a good story to share, but the only kid I knew with a gray tooth was my little brother who slipped at the grocery store, hit his face on the floor, and ended up with the gray tooth. He eventually had to have a root canal and to have the tooth pulled. But hey, it's just a baby tooth, so it isn't the end of the world. He models now.

A gray tooth is usually dead. Luckily, your toddler still has adult teeth that will come in and be just fine. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

My son has a gray tooth, from falling on his face. The dentist looked at it and said keep an eye on it, and just let it fall out. He said it wouldn't turn back to the normal color.

Children's teeth are VERY soft and sensitive. She could have hit her tooth very minimally, and there was still enough trauma.

When one of my girls was little, one of her teeth turned when she was around 4. It actually looked more purple than gray to me. But it was a baby tooth. And I could never recall any trauma to that tooth. But it did fall out like baby teeth do. She starting losing her teeth around 5 1/2 or so I think it was one of the incisors but might have been one next to the front. The adult tooth grew in white. The dentist said there was no cavity and nothing was ever done to it (no filling, cap etc). She had that colored tooth for well over a year and it did not get dark gray or anything. Just a shade of purple, maybe purlpish-gray.

it means the tooth died. A dead tooth can never be a living tooth again. They require root canals in order to keep them it. Good thing it was a baby tooth.
