Has Anyone Tried a Diet for AD/HD That Has Worked?

I have beautiful 10 year old boy that was diagnosed with AD/HD when he was five. I have tried several medications (he is currently taking Focalin XR). For the most part this medication seems working pretty well, but he also has an awesome teacher who is in good communication with me. I have been looking to take him off medication, I am really afraid of the long term affects of taking it.

I bought a book "The Kid friendly ADHD & Autism cookbook" I am hoping to change his diet this summer and see if I can take him off meds. Anyone else try this book or has tried a diet that has worked?

Would love some feed back. Thanks :0)

What can I do next?

HI
i have one son that is adhd and another that is autisitc. we have been on gfcf for years, it made a little bit of difference but not much. in a week or 2 we will be starting a new diest SCD. it has helped many asd kiddos. i am reall excited about it. there is a gropu on yahoo pecanbread . also go to http://www.pecanbread.com/ and http://breakingtheviciouscycle.info
these site talk allot about autism, but you must realise adhd is an autism spectrum disorder. it is much milder than autism but these diets will help.. i really believe it. another thing you can do is seek out a dan doctor. http://www.icdrc.org/index.html
he is a good one, i have seen him in the past. what you want to start thinking is I WANT TO RECOVER MY CHILD. yes you should be afraid of the side affects of the medicine, they are horable. my children are not on any right now. and i wont concider it till all my other options are exasted. huggs momma email me ok..

Dear M.,

I want to thoroughly applaud you for looking at alternatives to medication for your son. Diet and exercise are probably two of the most effective, and natural, solutions for kids that have an abundance of energy.

Have you considered looking into working with a nutritionist? They can often give you many wonderful ideas that are specific to your child - thinks that will help fill out his diet in the best way for him. I don't know where you are located, but there is a great nutritionist in the Clearwater area, Dr. Susan Player, and another in Tampa, Dr. Scott Damanti.

Dear M.,
Greetings!!!

It's wonderful to hear that you are looking into taking your son off the medications and researching natural remedies and different diets instead. Sugar, dyes, different food combinations and even toxins (in the environment and home) can truly make a difference in a child's behavior. But, please also remember that kids are ALIVE and have feelings and spirit and do not deserve to be labeled or medicated. I definitely know from experience that these medications do more harm than good and that, in fact, there are many natural solutions that can actually help with what your son is going through.

I highly recommend contacting Dr. Susan Player who is truly an incredible Nutritionist.

M.,

I am a 36 year old women who has been struggling with ADHD my whole life on and off all different meds. When I was younger my mother put me on the feingold diet. It made a word of difference. I was on it and functioning great till I had to leave for college. When I went to college it was to difficult to maintain so I went on meds. Once I got a stable life with my husband 6 years ago I went back to the feingold diet and it is wonderful! here is the website: www.feingold.org

I teach pre-k children with Austim and have seen first hand the effects of diet changes and how the peservatives in foods really do have a huge impact on certain kids. It is worth trying. The gluten casien free diet is one to try only if your child is allergic to those products otherwise it really won't make a difference.
Another thing you might want to consider is food allergy testing. My cousin was thought to be ADHD but after years of taking meds that relly did not help they found out he was allergic to any corn products (corn syrup, corn flakes, corn). I am living a meds free life and really enjoying myself, my husband and my child while being able to finish up my MBA in leadership.
Good Luck!

Yes, Diet & Nutritional Supplements are your answer not drugs with even nastier side effects & damage. Low suger, watch the dyes in food, more raw foods - less processed foods. I have a 6 yr old son that was having problems in Kindergarten and because of diet change and a natural supplement addition is has been much improved and in top 3 of class of 19 kids. He takes BrightSparks & FocusFormula from a company called Native Remedies. The best and natural, plus you can adjust the dosage to your needs. They have great specials that make it easier to buy, but prices are good. Worth every penny we have spent to get a great kid at school & home. Plus, he takes my favorite product Zija, for overall vitamin, mineral & amino acids that we all need daily not matter how good we eat. Best of luck and if you have questions for me please contact me.

I used to work with children with autism and have seen what amazing results a change in diet can make.

It makes you realize how much better off we all would be with better diets. I think that book and those changes could be huge for your son! Good luck.

Also - let me say I am also a distributor for MonaVie and a big believer in it! So you should look at the first posters site (I won't step on any toes). It has helped many of my family members with various issus/medical conditions.

Good luck!

Hello, I often hear about these issues and am not a medical doctor, only a mom who completely understands the frustation of dealing with kids with these issues. I have twins age 5 and would never use meds for there issues. I am an independent distributor for MonaVie. Not a drug. An all natural fruit beverage comprised of 19 whole/organic fruits. When I added this to my boys diet I noticed amazing results. Most of the time these types of kids are lacking nutrients and by using this great tasting juice they get what they need. Although not a "cure all". I have many testimonials to share. Not just for kids. Even for us moms who find it difficult to get the right nutrition that we need to deal with the kids! ha ha.

Anyway, if interested I have a website. www.mymonavie.com/ydoacai also my name is Debbie and if you want more info feel free to call me I live in Sarasota ###-###-####.

I also tinker with the gluten/casein free diet. I notice huge changes when I limit the dairy and avoid red dyes.

Hope this is helpful. Have a great day and
Happy Mother's Day!

a friend of mine's child was starting to show symtems of ADHD so she is trying a diffent diet. now i know it seems strange (but if it works its worth trying) She has completely removed food dye from her sons food and within days *(and I literally mean days) she saw a remarkable improvement in both behavior and attitude. Also he seemed to stop bouncing off the walls. The main colors are red dye 40 and yellow dye but also the green has become an issue. if you start to look at labels (which I did after speaking with her) you would be amazed at how much food dye is in our childrens food. Also since he has been off all food dyes when given something with the dye in it he again starts to bounce off the walls, so there is a difference for him. I hope you find what you are looking for and I hope this might help
