Has Anyone Made...

Has anyone made a deer shaped cake? My son's eighth birthday is coming up and he saw a pic of a 3D 'deer' cake. I think I could make it, but not sure how to make the antlers. My husband thinks I should make it easy for myself and do a flat cake in the shape of a deer head rather than 3D (he's so sweet). Any suggestions/ideas?? His party is this Saturday (a week from today). I appreciate any of your help on this.

Thanks in advance,
~SR

So What Happened?

MANY Thanks to all you moms out there! I appreciate all your advice on what to do for the antlers on my "deer" cake. I liked more than one idea, but went with what I thought would be the simplest. I ended up using pretzel rods for the antlers. I only made the head (baked in a pampered chef 2qt bowl). I cut twinkies and "glued" them for the ears and nose. I think it turned out pretty great, for an amature ;) If I were to do it again and have more time, I think I would try the rice krispie idea and shape it into the antlers. Although with the pretzel rods, I didn't have to frost them to match. My son was pretty pleased with it and had a great time today with his friends at his birthday party... in fact a couple are still here (spending the night). My husband must have thought I did pretty well also, because he said that I better have taken a picture so he could post it on his Team Real Tree forum.

Thanks again so much for all of your help. I'm so glad that I asked. My husband asked in his forum and had no responses. I guess their expertise is shooting the deer, not baking them! -- LOL!

I must go now to decorate my daughter's "Dora" cake for tomorrow (hers is not 3-D, thank goodness).

Thanks!
~SR

I'd stick to just a head...the body could be tricky and if you're drawing skills are like mine, it might not end up looking like a deer at all.

Something simple, like the Browning Logo might make it easier.

Hi,
I just saw a 3D deer cake on www.familyfun.com. There is an area that is called Great Cake Bake off (or something like that). They had a cake of a deer mount. You will need to click through the different pics in the animal cake section. When you get to that cake, click on it and it will tell you how they made it. Hope this helps. Good luck with your cake.

You can cut sheet cake into any shape you want and put it together with frosting. Or you can try to find a deer shaped cake pan. Good luck.

A deer cake sounds adorable! I made an elephant cake for my son's birthday one year which turned out really well. I didn't want to buy a pan since I knew I wouldn't use it again so I simply made a couple of 8" round cakes; one for the face and the other to cut up for the pieces. From the second cake I cut out ears which I attached to the sides of the head with raspberry jam and I made a trunk. The trunk was more 3D since it was on the face. Then I made a bluish icing for the elephant, white icing for the eyes, and used black writing icing to outline the eyes and for the pupils. I have picture of it if you'd like to see it.

If you made a deer, you can make two 8" round cakes; one for the face and the other for small ears and antlers (if you want antlers). Place the cake on a large piece of sturdy cardboard that you can wrap in foil to keep the cake clean. If you want to add antlers, build the antlers the way you like and fasten them with jam or icing. Add a nose and frost the whole thing. You can add white spots and eyes using tubes of drawing icing.

It's really not difficult and you can really see it come together once you start frosting it. I'm not creative at all and if I pulled it off anyone can. :)

Good luck!

Could you make the antlers out of the big pretzel sticks and "glueing" them in shape with frosting that hardens, like you would use for a gingerbread house? You don't need a big set of antlers, most are only 2 or 3 points on each.

I have made all sorts of cakes but never a deer. I've done lots in 3D, bears, lambs, castles, haunted houses, tractors, dump truck, a '38 chevy truck, and even a six foot long semi. For a more edible realistic look I would use taffy or starburst candy. You can use it like modeling clay. The rice crispies treats sounds good as well. All of my 3D cakes I bake several cakes and layer them with frosting or filling between the layers and use knives to carve the image out and then frost it. I have several sizes of offset knives as I decorate a lot of wedding cakes. I also put dowel rods in through the layers for support and to keep things from sliding around. Another hint is to decorate the cake at it's display area so you don't have to move it as much. Also if you decide to use the royal icing idea, start today and make extras as they are very fragile, plus to keep the 3D,place the flat sides together with icing. Hope it goes well A. P.S. feel free to email me with any questions or for recipes ____@____.com . I've been in the cake business for 30 years

As far as I know about making any kind of 3-D cake you'll need the right kind of cake pan, they are usually sold at craft stores like Micheal's or JoAnn's and the antlers should be a part of the pan. I have made teddy bears and frogs before but I have seen the deer pan too but it was a while ago. If you don't have any luck at the craft stores check eBay.

I have made a lot of different cakes including 3-D train cake, Dora, Cloey, Elmo, rubber ducky, clown, etc. For Dora, I looked on the internet to make a print of a picture I wanted. In some cases like Dora, I used a good copier to get it to the size I want. Then trace around it for the shape. When I cut the cake to the correct shape, make sure you freeze the cake first and then cut it as it will keep its shape better. It is fun...be creative! And the kids love it! R. H.

what about just forming some out of pipe cleaner and just remove them when you serve it? I dont know how big you are going to make the cake but it might work.

I've done 3-D cakes, they have turned out great, but I think you should consider your husband's counsel.:-) Most of the time I find that the person for whom it is made would have been just as happy with a flat cake on which I had drawn a picture of the item I worked so hard to make in 3-D. My guess is that your son pointed at a "deer cake" not necessarily a "3-D deer cake". My experience is that the hours invested in the 3-D project were not greatly appreciated and definitely not appreciated any more than a flat one would have been.

How about a compromise where you make a half sheet cake, draw a deer on it and do just the head 3-D or even draw the head and put pipe cleaner antlers on the flat drawing. A few 3-D touches always 'spruce up' a flat cake.

I'll be eager to hear what you end up doing.

From my experience a making a cakes, I have always done a cake pan and cut it to what ever shape, glued layers by frosting. The antlers you could use pretzels or make your own and shape them. how about a branches of a small tree just debark and wash them.
Melt chocolateand drizzle it the shape you want let harden. Have fun. AW

Sounds sooo cute!! I would go for the 3D. Try google images, I've gotten a few tips there. If you have a 3D pan that would be easier. I've made a duck & lamb from these pans, and the lamb could easily be decorated into a deer. You could use pretzels for the antlers or even a non-edible item such as pipe cleaners. Good luck!

HI You could try using the spray foam, you can pick it up at an home improvement store or Walmart. Spray it onto a flat surface (put foil down first) into the shape of antlers This stuff is really light. After it dries you can paint it to match. This stuff expands so make thin lines. After it dries you can poke sticks/squers (SP?) into the ends. You might want to put a little plactic wrap around the ends that touch the cake. I hope this works for you.

All of the shows I watch about cooking or cake decorating they use rice crispie treats for parts that need to bend. but these tasty treats are made with a bit more cereal to firm them up a bit.
You are very brave, good luck with the cake
I wish this had a spot to add pics at times cause this is one I would like to see. I just love cooking and baking and I dont think my talent is going 3d but, I sure like the way a slice looks on my plate!! best of luck to you and happy birthday to your son.
