I am the proud new momma of a baby boy so I am in tons of pictures now and I am unhappy with my teeth. I have been thinking about possibly getting lumineers and just wondered about other peoples experiences. How do they look, how much do they cost etc, and is the money worth it?
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My ssiter in law checked into it and it is THOUSANDS of dollars. I don't know if you have thought of braces or maybe bleaching, perhaps you just need caps? The ins will not cover lumineers but will cover almost anything else.

J.,
I had 10 teeth fixed with "veneers" about 3 years ago. I had damaged my teeth years ago when I didn't take good care of my braces. I am absolutely THRILLED with my new teeth!

My understanding is that Lumineers are very generic - they pick one set that they think will look good on you and just glue them to your teeth. The Veneers that I had done were made specifically for me. They are ceramic veneers and are cemented to my teeth so they're very permanent.

I believe that veneers are MUCH more expensive than Lumineers, but it sounds to me like they are more permanent and they are more likely to look natural. I have seen people who look like they had chicklets (the gum) glued in thier mouth - not to say that Lumineers would definately look that way.

The dentist that did my teeth is Dr. Jeffrey Angart at the Center for Dental Health (in New Albany). I used my flexible spending account through my employer to have them done over a course of 2 years. Fair warning though... it was close to 10 Grand for all 10 teeth.

I think that it was worth every penny and would do it again in a heartbeat. It made me feel SO much better about myself - I don't cringe anymore when I look at pictures of myself & I'm much more willing to smile for the camera! :-D

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Hi J.,
I am a dental hygienist so I thought I'd post a response to your question. First of all, congratulations on your new baby and congratulations on wanting to improve your smile! Lumineers are just one of many cosmetic procedures that can be done these days. Obviously, the first thing you need is a complete dental evaluation from an DDS. Try and find one who has experience in cosmetic dentistry. Not all DDS's are as talented as others when it comes to cosmetics. Ask around for referalls, check the phone book, check online -- go to the office and ask to see before and after photos. Make sure you are comfortable with the doctor and the office, and their payment policy. Most cosmetic treatment is not a dental benefit, so you may need to partake in a financing program -- we're talking thousands of dollars depending on how many teeth you treat. Your DDS will help you determine the health of your teeth, gums and bone before you start. Everything needs to be healthy before you can begin treatment. You may consider a whitening procedure before you do veneers. Once the veneers are made they can never be lightned, so do whitening first. I think cosmetics is definitely "worth it" as long as you take some time, do some research, find a talented DDS. Once you decide to do the treatment make sure you follow through with routine preventive appointments -- see your hygienist every 3-6 mos and keep your home care top notch. Once you invest in your beautiful new smile you will definitely want to maintain it!

Lumineers are a brand name for dental veneers and cost more than custom made porcelain veneers. I have veneers on 6 of my front teeth. I have then for 7 years and LOVE them.
They do cost a lot of money and you should talk to your dentist about your needs. Maybe all you need is to whiten your teeth to improve there look.
In some cases insurance might approve the coverage, that if your dentist can present the case to the insurance company proving that you NEED them.
In any case at your next cleaning discuss your options with your dentist.
Good luck and Happy New Year!

P.S. I'm a dental assistant.
