Has Anyone Ever Fought a Ticket in Court? Did You Win?

I have never in my whole life received an actual driving ticket. I have only received warnings. Today while dropping my son off at school, I received a parking ticket for parking in the no-parking zone. I honestly was not aware of the sign and have parked in the same spot everytime I have dropped off my son.

When I went back to pick up my son, the officer was issuing citations and tickets to many of the other parents. He gave one mother a ticket for her tint being too dark and another for parking too close to a stop sign. I saw him when I pulled up and did not want to make a u-turn in front of him and risk getting another ticket. So, I used my signals and I parked on the opposite side of the road, not realizing I was then parked the opposite direction. Of course, he gave me a ticket. I was so scared and upset that I couldn't find my driver's license, ticket number 3! (It was in my purse, just not in my wallet) Yippee me! Not to mention he threatened to arrest me for crying uncontrollably. Do you think I can fight these? I clearly broke the law in all three instances, but I feel he is harassing the parents at this school. Especially since we are out of our cars for less than three minutes. I don't have the $300 plus for the tickets, but I don't want to risk it going on my driving record, if I don't win in court. Any advice? I don't need RUDE people either! Please be understanding that this is not a good day!

What can I do next?

I agree you should have the ticket waived for not having the license, since you did indeed have one. If you were to go to court there is no guarantee that the judge would waive the ticket if the cop doesn't show up. I went once, and the cop didn't show up, but they did reduce my fine to $25. You could also get stuck with court costs if you don't win. Your best bet would be driving school. It's a fraction of the cost and your driving record stays clean. I would call to find out if you were to to take a driving course if it would wipe out all your tickets.

As for the cop, you could file a complaint along with the other parents. That way you don't look like the odd person out and they may take the complaints seriously.

Just two months ago my husbands truck was impounded and his license and registration revoked FOR NO REASON. The cop couldn't find our vehicle as having insurance on HIS computer and point blank refused to call our insurance company or let us call- even though we had the cards!!! ( Note- my dh is Native American, but people construe that as Mexican sometimes- this was implied repeatedly throughout the process) I am not racist- I am fair and blue eyed and my husband is quite dark.;)
We both had our licenses-he took my husbands. My husband fought it. Now my husband has gone to school for lawyer type stuff at one time( decided on something else) and he got together proof of everything and showed up to court looking 100 percent/ Necktie, crisp shirt nice pants, shoes, briefcase, etc. Haircut, the whole nine. He had ALL the paperwork he needed ready to present. The judge he went before took him seriously, and fined the officer for what he did and the DMV for the way they treated him. He was assigned to a cop from a completely different city and of a completely different race for six months, and he was put under review. We did end up losing the truck, since the state would not pay for damages- we had to sell it to the impound lot just to cover the cost of it being there. So we are out our vehicle- but at least the cop was brought to justice.
Go to court, show up looking together and professional. I don't care if you are a soccer mom, folks have a way of taking seriously a woman in a power outfit and heels. I show up to my dr. appts in one because there is such a difference in treatment there. Have your paperwork together, yourself together. They are far more likely to hear you out and take you seriously if you look like you have something to say worth hearing. KWIM?? Don't show up in casual clothes.:) LEt me know how it turns out!

Hi JC,

I would go to court if I were you. If it was just the parking ticket than it would not be worth it. But with everything else I would defintely go! One if he does not show up at the court on your court date. The tickets automatically get thrown out. If he does come you will be able to state your case to the judge. The tickets will go on your record either way, whether you do not go to court, or whether you do and the judge rules in the cops favor. The only way it will NOT go on your record is if you go to court and the judge throws it out. The only down side to going to court, other than time is you might have to pay court costs, which ranges from aroung $50-$150. But if you get the tickets waived off then you save money on that and isurance going up. Sounds like a really really crappy day and it is upsetting. Your not a criminal though even though he made you feel that way. :) Hope this advice helps and have a great rest of the day! Eat some bon-bons and watch a soap lol.

The officer/city may have been trying to send a message because of repeated offenses that are endangering children. I wish the City of Glendale would do the same. Parents repeatedly use the Fire Lane as a place to park, if there was a medical or fire emergency the fire department would have to wait for the cars to move to get to the school.
As far as the tickets you recieved, they will waive the ticket for the licens, but the others you will most likely have to pay or go to driving school.

I dont have any advice just wanted to say it sounds like he was just tring to be a jerk especially the crying thing. Can you really get arrested for crying that is insane, I have gotten out of tickets from crying(not intensionally)anyways keep your head up, they should drop the no liscense because you did infact have one at the time of ticket. and you may be able to go to driving school to have the rest off your record. and I think the cost is a lot less than the tickets. Can I ask what school? just curious.

Wow! What a jerk! Sounds like he had nothing better to do today right? Sorry to hear. I only got a speeding ticket for driving 45 in a 35 in Queen Creek and did not know the speed limits had changed. I fought it out on 3 different court dates and of course, lost.
Good Luck! BTW, which school was that so I can watch out if I am around there??
