Hard Time Switching from Bottle

I am a SAHM of 3 boys. My oldest son lives with his dad and was and easy child. My four year old was a little rougher. Here is my dilema. My 2 year old is still taking a bottle. I have tried giving him sippy cups and he just pushes them away. I wait until he is really hungry and he still won't take it. He will drink water from them but not his milk. Now the other situation is he is still taking formula due to his digestive system not being mature, we have tried soy, lactose free, lactaid, 1%, 2% and he wants nothing to do with any of it. My pediatrician has told me not to get to concerned about the milk thing at this point but not being able to get him off the bottle is getting frustrating. I have tried the nuby, the gerber, the playtex and several others. Please help, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It has been rough! Not much progress but thank you to everyone for the great advise and believe me there are a few tips that some of you have given here that I will be trying and I am keeping my fingers crossed that they work. I will keep you up to date.

Thanks

When i switched from the bottle to a sippy cup, I kept on letting my son have a bottle at night. I would always give in. So finally one day I threw away every bottle in the house. That way he had no choice but to drink from a sippy cup. When he hets thirsty enough he will take the sippy cup. Hope this helps.

Hi S.,

Children are imitators and often do what they see. Have you tried this? Another child around the same age who does drink frm a sippy cup? Children learn from each other and even at this young age, competition exists. Give a try, you might get a surprise!

Gook Luck,

I have the same problem now. My son is 2 and 1 1/2 months old and started pre-school 2 weeks ago where they do not allow bottles or sippy cups so we started no bottles June 4th. He also has not had a lot of milk. I give him a yo baby yogurt in the morning and a drinkable yogurt for lunch which I know neighter is a good substitute but you can't back down. He will be ok for a little bit without milk until he gets adjusted to the new change. We just have to be strong. My son does drink from a juice box (which can be messy-lol), so I can considering getting milk taht comes in a juice box style which of course is $6 for 4, but I have to try something. I don't know what to tell you about the formula. How long does your doctor feel he should be on formula? Let me know the progress. Goos luck! Just know....same boat here.

My 21 month old son still gets a bottle at nap time and bed time. For quite a while he also refused milk from a cup or cold milk from a bottle. I began to add a little choclate to the milk in the cup and then he would drink it. I slowly added less and less choclate to the milk over time and now he will drink milk from cup and will also drink cold milk in his bottle.
I hope this helps.

Hi S.,
I know its hard to just not give the bottle because you want him to get his nutrition. My son who is 18 months old gave me a hard time. Just try stopping one bottle. I bought all different sippy cup and finally I found one Christian really likes.Maybe your son may take to the straw sippy cup. I just stopped his morning bottle and replaced it with the sippy cup first he toyed with it didn't want it but I kept it around him and finally he drinks from it. His cup was with him everywhere we went. I am surprise he doesn't want to be like his older brothers or he is playing you up and doesn't want to grow up. He is comfortable. Boys, men tend to be like that ;-). I know the concern and the frustration. He will drink if he is thirsty. He just knows you. Good luck

This may sound a little strange, but is there someone who could or would be willing to keep your son for a day? My daughter was attatched to her bottle still at 24months. I tried everything I could think of. My mom kept her while I was in the hospital having my son and when I got home 2 days later, no more bottle. My mom just told her Gammaw doesn't have bottles... bottles are for little babys. It helped that my daughter had a little brother coming home that she could associate with the bottle, but I really think it helped that it wasn't mommy she was fighting with. Have you ever noticed that your children are better behaved when they are with other people and not you?:) It might be worth a try:) Hope this helps! Good Luck!

My 10 month old figured out how to drink from a straw, so instead of sippy cups, I bought him the Playtex cups that have the straw built in (you roll the top and the hidden straw pops up). You can get insulated and non-insulated. Take him to the store and let him pick one.

My daughter was addicted to her pacifier until age 2. This is what we did... Make a hole thru the nipple of the bottle and tell him thebottle broke. Let him throw the bottles in the trash one by one until there are no more "good" bottles.

With our son, he would take milk at all since he was breastfed until 13 months. Finally he started drinking milk from a regular mug- this worked great. He now takes juice and water from a sippy cup and his milk from a regular cup or mug.

I was going to recommend the Nuby, but I see that you've tried it. Was it the soft spouted one? I found this one to be most like a bottle nipple and we were very successful with it. I used it as a bottle to sippy transition. (Like another Mom has suggested, make the bottles disappear so that DS can't find anymore... that may help.) You could also go back to a beginning nipple (Avent called them 1's). This may frustrate him and make him want to use a sippy so that he doesn't have to work so hard to get his drink... I know that's mean, but it might work!
I'm sure you've also tried mixing formula 1/2 and 1/2 with milk, or even start with more formula, less milk and increase the milk little by little. I thought the flavored milk might be a good suggestion, but then you might get yourself into a situation where DS always expects that, too, and that isn't a good habit to start.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck.
