Handwriting Tutor
My nephew needs a handwriting tutor. He has been struggling this year with not getting his work graded because the teacher says it is illegible. As well as he gets points deducted for his handwriting when she does grade his work. He went from getting A's and B's with the teacher for the first half of the year to D's and F's with this current teacher who replaced the previous one that moved to another state for her husband's job. Anyway, he does need to work on his handwriting because he is only in the 4th grade. Anybody have any ideas or great tutors who specialize in this area?
So What Happened?™
Thanks so much for all your help. My sister and her husband have talked with the teacher and are now looking into all of your suggestions. Thanks again, I am so glad to know that there are resources out there for my nephew.

Hi G.-
I don't know of a private tutor, however Aspire Pediatrics in The Woodlands has a summer handwriting course taught by an occupational therapist. My son goes for speech and occupational therapy at their location and all of the therapists are so wonderful and caring I'm sure they could help. Here's a link to their website http://aspirepediatrics.com/index.php

Go to an occupational therapist. We are going through the same thing with my brilliant 4th grader.

I teach and I am so sorry that a teacher would take off points due to handwriting. She should offer to let him type his answers on the computer. Have his mom request that he get observed by the physical therapist from the district. When a parents makes a request that will make things happen more quickly. In the mean time, check out hte website www.hwtears.com. It is called Handwriting without Tears and it is absolutely fabulous! I use it in my district. The kids really enjoy the activities and like practicing thier letters, numbers, etc. Good Luck!

Is it possible that your nephew has Dysgraphia? It means that one has trouble writing. If so....then according to state laws....teachers HAVE to modify their grading as long as you have modifications on file with the school. Try this website http://www.ncld.org/index.php?option=content&task=vie...
I am a teacher of 15+ years. I have had several students have with dysgraphia. I supply them with a hard copy of notes as long as they attempt to write. I tell them that the only way to improve in your skills is through practice. Now I also allow them to type their homework. My tests are multiple choice types or I allow them to orally respond. It sounds like this teacher may be unapproachable, but try talking to them. If the teacher won't help you, don't hesitate to go over their head.
