Ladies:

I wonder if any of you have tried for hands free pumping. There are several devices available on amazon and elsewhere. Any suggestions/ recommendations???

I am a first time mom to a 3.5 month old boy. I returned to work last week and am pumping 3x a day in a nursing room. I'm petite but curvy. 5'1" and 125lbs with a 32DD before pregnancy, top weight of 149lbs, now back to 132lbs. Not quite sure how big "the girls" are, but I assure you, they are still large.

It would be nice to have a free hand. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Also, feel free to share any bad experiences.

Also, any tips on increasing production? I manage about 2oz at every pump.

Thanks,

What can I do next?

I have never used a hands-free pump so I have no advice on that. I did pump from 3-13 months using a Medela Pump In Style Advanced. I just want to tell you that I tried Fenugreek to increase my milk supply and it gave my son green diarrhea so I didn't use that for very long. Breast feeding/pumping while working is not an easy task....hang in there...it will be worth it in the end.

Any pump cups will work, of course some better than others. Just put the cups inside your bra and viola - hands free!!

Pumping after the 4 months mark is really difficult. By then your supply has customized to baby and really only reacts to suckling from baby, not a machine attempting suction.

I'd try eating oatmeal, healthy foods and keep hydrated. If that's not working better for you, try taking Fenugreek WITH Blessed Thistle. Also - above all - nurse as much as possible when you are with baby!!

La Leche League has a bra made to work with any pump.

Also, most pumps are not made for working mom use. You need a hospital grade double electric pump or something comparable. Here's a list http://babyproducts.about.com/od/feedingdrinks/tp/bestbre...

I was a poor pumper. I drank the beer (you CAN get non alcoholic, like the Mexican beer can't remember what it's called.) I took the fenugreek from the spice section and Mother's Milk Tea. But pumping is a poor substitute for baby.

It helped me to encourage a second let down. I could pump for 10 minutes and then an hour later pump again and get more milk then I would have in one 20 minute pumping session.

Still, for me the milk eventually dwindled to almost nothing! So I hope you have better success then I did. I wasn't working, but had preemies who couldn't nurse well.

Medela has a hands free pump that I used and before I had that I also used the boustier that was a life saver. I like the Medela hands free pump because it is small and has the 2 settings like the rental pumps. I used fenugreek and I have seen Wishgarden Herbs has a few milk production tincatures. We take their KickIt line when we get sick and it is amazing stuff.

I LOVED, loved, loved the hands free boustier. It rocked my world! I highly recommend it. I never had any problems with it and I used it multiple times every day for months on end. My breasts were a 40 I, so even with large ones it still works!

Also to increase milk I took fenugreek. There is a prescription that your doctor can give you, I forget what it's called, but don't take that. It made me super crazy and after I stopped taking it I heard other bad stories from it. Fenugreek is an herbal supplement that you can get at any health food store and probably Whole Foods. It will make you smell like maple syrup, which I know sounds super freaky, but it does. Even my husband noticed it, so it wasn't just my imagination!

Also you can drink a beer every night (probably not at work! LOL!) before you pump and it will make a difference. Some people out there will tell you not to even drink one beer, but trust me, it's fine! One beer is not going to make your baby drunk! They will barely get any of the beer and none of the alcohol part. The darker the better worked best for me, but any old beer will do.

I got a pumpin' pal from my LC. It was simple and worked fine. Only like $10, too, and easy to transport. http://www.pumpinpal.com/html/hands-free_breast_pumping_s...

For more breastfeeding info, try kellymom.com. Your 2 oz output isn't that bad. Most women don't get huge amounts at pumping. Pumps are not as efficient as a baby. What pump are you using? You want a workhorse, so if you have something like Playtex or Evanflo, consider a Medela or Ameda. I've also heard good things about the Lanisoh double electric.

I also liked the book Nursing Mother, Working Mother.

In general, drink water, try Mother's Milk Tea, eat oatmeal, and try not to stress.
