Hand Foot Mouth Disease or Not?

My daughter (who is 6 years old) has just gotten a blister on the roof of her mouth and I'm not sure if it's HFMD or not. She has no fever, but has little or no appetite. The only blister she has is on the roof of her mouth and a little one on the palm of her hand. I called the doc and she obviously wants to to see her but I'm not sure if I want to waste a co-pay and a half an hour drive for them to tell me that it's nothing. Any info would be great!

What can I do next?

I am not a doctor but it certainly sounds like it. You should absolutely go to the doctors to get diagnosed because HFMD is VERY contagious and you have 2 other children and you need to take precautions. Good luck (my son had it last year and me and my husband both got it afterward...it was terrible!!!!)

Hi F.
I know paying co-pays is a real drag and can really take from your weekly spending money that you no doubt need for your family's needs, but take her to the Dr.
Don't mess around with something like that.
Always better to be safe than sorry.
I hope your baby is well real soon,
P.

I would think just knowing your child is ok...or catch what is wrong early so it can be treated properly is well worth the drive and co-pay.
Is there anything else in the area of the doctors office that you can do that might hold your interest to combined on the same day making the drive to the doctors office not a waste of time for you?

Those are all symptoms...I would get her seen and not send her to school...as it's very contagious.

It could be - although Coxsackie usually has fever, too. Keep an eye out for more blisters (check her feet, too). I'm usually the first one to say RUN to the doctor since he/she knows best - but there is really nothing he/she can do since it just has to run its course. When my daughter and I had it (yes, me too - I thought I was going to die is was so miserable :) ) she was 2 she drooled a lot and wouldn't eat. But she got better in 2-3 days. Since your daughter is 6, I'd see how she feels tomorrow. No chance of Chicken Pox, right? Oh, and keep washing your hands and keep her away from the other kids if possible. Let her keep her own towel to dry her hands, etc.

probably so, i believe it is quite contagious and she should not be in school until blisters are gone. i'd give a call to the dr. about the school thing. also, sometimes it's worth the copay and time just to make sure.

I would not take chances with this. You never know what it is (hopefully it is minor) and if she is not eating, she is obviously not feeling well. I always air on the side of caution with my children and go to the doctor with anything out of the ordinary. Good luck and I hope she gets well soon.
