Hand, Foot and Mouth
Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with hand, foot and mouth. My poor 14 month old is miserable. She goes through phases where she seems OK then cries for hours in pain. Its just awful, any advice would be greatly appreciated!
So What Happened?™
Thank you everyone for all your advice. She seems to be feeling better..still not eating but no more fever. The one thing she now has though is a rash on her head, and chest. I know the doctor did say she would get a rash so hopefully this is the end of it! I will just pray now that our 3 1/2 year old doesn't get it..:o(
Thanks!

ugh....my son had it in June. It's awful. I don't think there was anything that made him feel better, not that I can remember anyway.

It should only last a couple of days
Definitely give her a pain reliever in the form of motrin or tylenol.
call the doctor again as there could be another problem like ear infection or strep throat causing her undue pain.

When my daughter had it, they suggested to have them rinse their mouth with a mixture of benedryl and mylanta. It helps to coat the mouth and they get some relief from the sores. I can't remember the doses. If you ask the pharmasist they will be able to tell you. I had never heard of it but the pharamcist had and it did help. Good luck.

Hi L.,
So sorry to hear about your little one, Hand, Foot and Mouth is aweful and unfortunately there is not a whole lot you can do. My nephew just had it and my sister said she just let me rest, drink a lot and eat popsicles. I'm not a big fan of juice, but you might make or buy some 100% juice popsicles or freeze squeeze yogurts (I think Stoneyfield makes organic ones) for her to suck on, the cold will help if she has sores in her mouth and throat. I would think some kind of pain reliever would help if she has a fever or is in pain. Try to keep your other daughter away from her since it is highly contagious. Sorry I'm not more helpful. Good luck!

ugh, i hate this viral thing. my youngest has something similar, right now, not as bad accompanied by diahrea...yay.
when my oldest had it, we did ice pops and ibuprofin and lots of water, thats about it. It sucks but theres not much else to do. Warm baths and hydracortizone for itching. It should be gone soon, Good Luck!

Alternate tylenol and motrin every 3 hours. For example, at noon give her tylenol. At 3, give her motrin. At 6, give her tylenol again, and so on. It will help keep the fever down and keep her a little more comfortable. Popsicles might help too if she has the sores in her mouth and throat. And of course, lots of extra hugs and cuddles. My son gets this from time to time and it's one of those really frustrating viruses that you have to let run it's course. She should be fine in 3 or 4 days.

Im so sorry for your little one:( My daughter had that. We gave her cold pediasure. It was the only thing she would drink and it has nutritinal value.
There realy is nothing else that you can do for their pain. I feel for you Mamma! I know how tough if is. I dose get better.

Hi L.!
My daughter had this when she was older (3.5) so I'd check with your doctor before doing it but my pediatrician had me mix maalox with benedryl (I think) and just rub it inside her mouth, we did not have her swallow it! and it seemed to help with pain of the mouth sores.
