Halloween Costume - Olathe,KS

hey guys, just a quick question. of course i know my kid is adorable, but finances are tight this year and i'm not spending boocoo bucks on a cheap halloween costume that will fall apart after one wearing. that said, my mom gave me a homemade clown costume that my brother wore, it's still in good shape, not faded at all. my question is, will putting my two year old in a clown costume get the "awwwe!" factor, or is that just dorky? i already know he won't wear a wig or funny nose, so i'm going to spray paint his hair to match the outfit, and put a bit of makeup on his face. i know we wore clown costumes (obviously!) when we were little but that was an eon ago...i am socially retarded, i have no clue what's cool anymore! any advice would be great...thanks so much!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

thanks ladies - of course i think he's adorable anyway! i'm surprised no one is admitting to just a little bit of vanity- i'm pretty sure i'm not the only mom that wants to make sure their kid's costume for halloween isn't lame! :) (i do hate to admit it too, but none of you guys know who i am on here anyway...!) anyway, thanks for your input. we'll go with the clown!

Hi, C.
Go ahead and use the clown costume. That's one of those classics that never go out of style. I put my 3 year old twins in clown costumes last year and every where we went people said how cute and adorable they were.

Have fun!

You are so funny!
I think it will be very cute.
You only get to choose what they will wear for such a short time, enjoy it!
Plus it won't be an overdone, mass quantity costume.
There will probably not be anybody in the same costume to take away from his "awwwe!"...

I think that he will look just adorable. You are being so smart using something over again. I have an 11yr daughter and she is going to be a clown this year. I can sew so I am making it with her help. No wig for us either. She wants her hair dyed!!! He is only 2 and won't care about the costume only the candy. Just have fun.

My parents live on what has been nicknamed 'Halloween Street' in our city because most residents (our family included) put up huge yard displays that attract people from all over the city. We usually see between 3000-4000 trick-or-treaters. No, I'm not exaggerating. Mostly we give out small, inexpensive candy otherwise the cost would make it impossible to participate. We do have full size candy bars that we have behind us for the kids (and sometimes even adults) in really cute, unique, or special costumes. These are usually the kids in homemade costumes or ones with really unique ideas. I can't tell you how many Batman's we saw last year, however we did see one who had made his own costume and utility belt that was awesome. He got a special treat. We don't like to see young ones in scary costumes, and the over marketed cartoon characters with plastic masks are everywhere. Your son would likely get the 'special' candy from us. And no, I'm not an 'old lady' or a prude, I'd say I'm pretty up to date with whats 'cool' nowadays.

I don't think a two-year-old really cares what's "cool," as long as he gets candy, lol, but the costume sounds cute! Then again, I'm not sure it's even possible for a toddler NOT to be cute in a Halloween costume! ;-)
I think a clown is one of those costumes that isn't just a "fad," like TV character and celebrity costumes so often are. Clowns for Halloween won't go out of style--and the same goes for witches, cats, skeletons, scarecrows, vampires, and princesses!
Incidentally, if the colored hair doesn't work out, and if you can get him to wear a birthday hat (you could attach it to a hood or baseball cap if needed), you might try that. :-)
Have fun!

Of course that would be cute!!! I think any costume that looks like some work was put into it is way cuter than a cheap store bought costume. I'm sure he will be adorable!

That sounds really cute. To tell you the truth I usually end up putting together my daughters costumes anyways. The costumes are so over priced and your right, very cheaply made. One year my daughter wanted to be a cat so I bought her cat ears, a black shirt, skirt, stockings, and shoes and then tucked a little black boa feather in her skirt for a tail. I painted her face too. It was SOOO cute and way better than anything I could find in a store. I think it will be a hit. Anyway you can save money nowadays!

Hi C.,

Have you ever seen Jojo the clown in the Disney channel?
Make it as similar as possible and he'll be up to date!!!
Check it out here:

Jojo is a girl but looks like a boy to me:)

Good luck!
P/S: I only have girls costumes at my house so I can't help any further, may be you can trade costumes with a boy's mom too.

I'd say who cares what anyone else thinks? Your child is two and won't judge you. Why spend money on something you said won't last for a different costume. It teaches our kids to be too materialistic when we show them they should always have new or what's in vogue.

I made my toddler a crayon one year out of: blue sweat shirt & pants, a blue hat ( I had to stuff it with poly-fill (or you could use a styrafoam cone) & hand sew ties to tie under his chin) & a piece of felt that I wrote CRAYON on it in puff paint, then hand sewed the felt onto the shirt sideways (like a crayon). After halloween I unstuffed the hat to use for winter & removed the felt from the shirt. Then he wore the sweat outfit for winter.

God Bless!
