Halloween Costume, 7Yo Boy

I'm pondering something and would like some gentle opinions.
My son is 7 and is looking for a halloween costume. , I am not afan of spongebob, iron man, black spidey, or scream and since he doesn't really see much of that anyways he hasn't asked for that.
I like to hand make his costumes so i need some extra time to do that, last year he was a shark, and the year before that a bug,
We just got a puppy and he is really into dogs, and his sister is going to be a black cat. Soooo,I said, would you like a dog costume? and he shrugged and said sure.
I would welcome other not so scary or totally commercial ideas. I have also suggested a veteranarian, and he wasn't as hot on that . not that he is overly hot about the dog costume.
If he sticks with the dog costume do you think that would be babyish??? Anyway to make it more mature? I'm not to worried about trick or treating, but at school, I'm wondering how to make it seem cool.
thanks for any gentle imput from those who celebrate.

My mom was handy like you (and I am OH SO ENVIOUS - LOL). She once made me a scarecrow costume....overalls, plaid shirt and a little hay "stuffed in", plus the straw hat and some face paint to look like stitching. Tie a piece of rope around the waist and you got yourself a scarecrow.

She also made me a Rubix Cube costume. Get a large enough box to fit him to about his knees...cut out holes for the arms and head. Leave the bottom open (cut the flaps off). Paint squares. I then wore sweat pants and a sweatshirt similar to the colors on the Rubix Cube and off I went. I will tell you, it was a little tricky getting up and down porches in this one, and also tougher getting through doors (at school), but otherwise, it was a HUGE hit with everyone....unless...do kids even know what a Rubix Cube is these days.....man, even just ASKING that I feel old. LOL

What about an athlete? Football player? Hockey player--is there anyone he likes?
SuperMario stuff is big if he's into those games/shows. Mario looks pretty simple.

If you take the puppy with you trick or treating... he could be a fire hydrant. :P

My brother liked dressing up as a girl for halloween... Not obvious like drag, but actually try to look "pretty"... It was always funny to see people not recognize him, then catch on and laugh. But he is a little young for that yet... it's funnier in high school.

My son (also 7) really liked the idea of being a Mad Scientist. I told him will would make him look like his experiment just exploded on him. He thought that was funny. He also said he wanted to be an Alien with 3 heads. Only I can't make that!
If you want him to match his sister, he could be a fisherman catching tuna? Or a dog trainer? How about if he was a vet or a pet owner after a cat attack? No blood or anything. Just a bandaid or two, bandages, ripped clothes and messed up hair!

If you want to go with the dog idea how about Snoopy or his alter ego Joe Cool?

Well what does HE want to be?

For a time, my daughter didn't have any real hankering things she wanted to be... and just wanted to go trick or treating in her pajamas. She called herself "Pajama Girl." And I put a cape on her. That's it.
It was cute. And cheap!

Just do something that HE wants....

This year, BOTH my kids are going as ghosts. I got the costume from E-bay. They love it! THEY chose it.
My daughter, is not worried about something being 'babyish' or not. She just chooses what SHE wants to wear. Even if pajamas.
My daughter is 7, too.

good luck,
Susan

Our daughter went as a bat one year. In Austin, we have one of the largest colonies of Mexican Freetail Bats living under one of our downtown bridges.. Is your city or state famous for some creature like that?

We had a neighbor who every year went as some sort of food item.. Banana Split, An order of McDonalds French Fries, Green onion.. I cannot remember the others, but she was always AWESOME! I could not wait to see what she would come dressed as.. She is now a freshman in college out of state.. It will be the first time she will not be here for Halloween since she was born..

I love the fire hydrant idea..
