ok, so we got invited to a Holloween Party, with a Pirate Theme...
Do you have any advise to help a costume stand out a little different than the pre-fab costumes at party city. For me and my husband) I have a feeling that alot of people will be in the same costume...lol

thanks guys!

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the idea's! I ended up going to a Halloween Costume place, let them dress me up and see what their idea was. The whole costume that they put on me ended up being about $250, ummmm ya I didnt buy it. I came home told my husband what they put on, and we went to the local Goodwill, and oh my goodness. I found almost everything I needed for $20. Boots, long black flowing skirt, white baggy shirt and a black vest. All I need is a colored scarf and I am ready to rock and roll... I couldnt have come up with this idea without you ladies!! RRRRR'nt you proud, lol

Pirate costumes are one of the easiest to do from stuff in your closet or goodwill!

For him, a flouncy white shirt, a vest, ripped up trousers, get a fake parrot and pin it to his shoulder, eyepatch, mustaches, sword.

For you, you can be a wench, long (or short) maxi skirt, flowy blouse, corset, lots of jewelry, black and white striped top or tights, add on accessories like a bag of coins/compass/spyglass... tied at your waist.

I like to download music, movies, music videos from the net. I thought about being an internet pirate. I was going to use my little boys pirate hat and print a circle with a line through it over the itunes symbol. But that might be a bit cerebral.
You can also go to a thrift store and find anything you need on the clothing racks to be a pirate.
I think it would be cute if he was a pirate and you be his captive. Get an old fashioned fancy dress from thrift store and tie a rope around your waist that he can hold.

Fullerton Civic Light Opera on Commonwealth will rent costumes, so you might want to check in with them. Or, if you don't mind being outside the box, you can dress as nerds and go as computer pirates. Have a great time! Arggh!

Don't know how creative you are, but my mom's best friend had the same dilemma. She went on a really fancy cruise that had a "pirate ball" one evening. She didn't want to dress as a pirate or a "wench" so she bought a simple wedding gown, and I hand painted it to look like bright colored feathers, wish I had a pic to send... anyway she was a "Parrot", the gown had a train that looked like tail feathers, and she had a red shawl that we sewed real feathers to the edge of to make "wings" She looked like a red, yellow and green macaw and was utterly stunning. Won the costume contest hands down! Think outside the box, could you be a treasure chest? a gold coin? Good luck. sounds like a fun party.

I immediately thought of a parrot. That would be fun.

Treasure chest?
Treasure map with an "X"?
Bag of gold? Hand out gold coin chocolates?
Captain Hook and Peter Pan and Tinkerbell?
Somalian pirates?
A bottle of rum? Poor drinks as you walk around?
A pirate ship? (Remember, my daughter is going to be the Titanic)

Have a great time!

We just went to a pirate party and I "made" all of our costumes. For me: Bought a huge red tshirt at walmart and cut out the neck. cut fringe at the arms and at the bottom hem. Add black leggings and black knee boots (already had) super smokey makeup and bandana I had (cost $3 for tshirt). For hubby: I sewed him a curdory vest for $7 (he did not have a vest but if you had one or goodwill). 2 white t shirts from walmart to sew and make one blousy t-shirt. (an oversized dress shirt would work as well and you could rip it a bit to be piratey. good will or a discount store for cheap shirt) He wore grey sweatpants he had with the leg cuffs pulled up to the knees so they would be blousey and wore long striped socks he had with sneakers and a bandana we had. (cost $13). For my girls I found cute pink and black tunic tops at target and ironed on rinestone "skull and cross bones" from walmart and added black with silver stud leggings from target. So theirs were a little more in total about $30 for both. but they could wear them as everyday clothes too, so its not for 1 night. I also bought them Mickey pirate ears (it was a Disney party) but I could have easliy bought coordinating fabric to make them bandanas too. Hopefully you can get some ideas. We looked great and original. NOt completely authentic but it was fun! My MIL went with us and she did basically the same as me but added some 99 cent store plastic swords and a belt. Stuff she had. Well except the swords...
