Hairless Cat?

I really want a hairless/sphynx cat. I'm pretty opposed to buying a cat, but I would pay to adopt one if such a thing even exists for this breed. I've looked around online but I can't find much in the area I am in.
I'd also like to know if anyone has one, what your experience has been with them. I know all animals are different, and I have done some research regarding their specific care, but I'd like some testimonials...
Thanks mamas!

So What Happened?

We did end up finding one on Craiglsist from a family who was rehoming theirs for various reasons. He is the sweetest, funniest, most curious cat we've ever had; and so affectionate. These cats do not like to be alone and this one at least, has made a great pet to our kids, who love petting him, playing with him and letting him sit on their laps. They do require a bit more care, but totally worth it if you want an interactive cat!

I have had haired cats. My friend moved to Hawaii and asked me to watch her sphinx cats for two months. They were a ton of work. I had to bath them twice weekly and sometimes more. They hated it. I know that is cat specific but it was traumatic for everyone. They did have more distinct personalities then haired cats, in my opinion.

My aunt is the lead keeper for the zoo in our hometown, and took care of one for 2 weeks. They are HIGH MAINTAINENCE! They are also prone to serious health issues. You would be better off getting a tabby cat and shaving it bald if you really want a hairless cat. lol.

Have you tried rescue groups? Search Sphynx rescue groups. Or, my brother has a Devon Rex which have fewer of the issues hairless Sphynx. He's a sweet little guy although somewhat skittish around kids in part because my brother's wife's niece is a bit of a terror. He has short curly hair that sticks close to his body and his fur is super soft. He greets people at the door and is very curious and will happily sit on a lap for rubs. He plays like a dog with toys and loves attention from his family including his dog "brother" who came after him. He will seek out attention if he feels he's being neglected which includes naughty things like getting on top of their tv (yes it's a flat screen LOL), tearing up the toilet paper and knocking things off of shelves. He also seeks warmth in places like the top of the fridge.

Years ago I had a friend who had one. That was the coolest cat ever. She basically had to take care of it like a baby though (bathing, lotioning, etc). A lot of people think they are gross to look at, or they would by weird feeling. Her's had skin like a baby, soft and would just lay on your lap and let you pet it for hours.
So I have not personally had one, but with my experience with my friend I would totally get one, and plan on it one day.

I am in Texas and I got my baby from a breeder in Dallas. He is the most loveable and sweet natured cat I have ever had. He does require some grooming but if you start giving him a bath and clipping his nails from the beginning it does not have to be an ordeal. My Kissa loves water. :-) I give him a shower once a week and his skin stays clear and soft as a warm peach. He does have to stay inside and only goes out for short periods with supervision. Much like a child. He is very friendly with children and other pets. Actually my maltese thinks she is his mother. Good luck! I hope you find one to suit you and your family.

I've worked in a vet's office where we had a family that had several. The cats were friendly and had good temperaments. I do remember their skin was greasy and after handling them it was hard to get it off your hands. They may be hard to find with a rescue, etc since people are paying big money for them as a purebred. Look around for local breeders too, sometimes if they are not show quality for whatever reason they may sell them at a lower cost. Good luck in your search.

Just as an FYI... there are hairless guinea pigs, as well.
In our city, I have seen it at a local pet store.

Sphynx cats... are not easy pets.

Have you ever had a cat? Or other pets before?

I've never had a sphynx, so I can't offer advice on the breed, but www.petfinder.com is a great way to locate a specific breed of animal that needs adoption, and you don't need to be local. My father adopted a dog from Kentucky and he lives in North Carolina. I can tell you if the reason you want a sphynx is due to allergies, the devon rex and cornish rex are also options.

Check to see if there are any cat rescue groups in your area. They have them for almost every breed.Or check the breeders to see if they have any that doesn't quit meet the requirements for the breed that they just might like someone to take off their hands. I haven't owned one but I've handled them before and they seem to be pretty neat cats.Lovable , personable and have been talkers.
They might have some skin issues like blackheads and gunk buildup on the nails and under the eyes. Also, they need to be completely indoors cats because there's no hair to protect them from the sun. I hope this helps you find your kitty you've been wanting. K. p
