So What Happened?

I want to thank all of you for your prompt responses at this time. I promise to let you know what results i get as the days go by. I like the suggestion to do a thyroid function test and i will get that done first and as soon as my exams are over in about 2 weeks time.

see what a medical doctor says. This could be a sign of hyperthyroidism. He will need to do a blood test to find out.

You should see a dermatologist for an assessment. They will check your thyroid levels and other blood work. They may also do a scalp biopsy. All this was done for me and still no real cause for my hair loss. What they did do was prescribe ketalog injections, either into your scalp for a more localized treatment or into your buttocks for general treatment. Ketalog is a hydrocortisone that is naturally found in your body. It seems to break the cycle of hair follicles falling out. I also got a shorter haircut because I notice when it was longer it fell out more. Good luck. I know how terrible one feels when their hair is falling out.

I am so sorry for you. I might be able to help. Before i decided to stay home ame be a full time mother, i worked for an herbal cosmetic company. I was not a chemist or a sales rep; but, a merchandising specialist. I spoke with many chemists in R&Dover the years about skin care, hair care etc...One important thing I learned i will share with you is the common mis-conception that people with problem skin are dirty...People with acne think their skin is dirty and scrub scrub scrub! this constant stimulation triggers sebaceous glands to produce more and more oil thus cloggin folicles and pores. It sounds like you are concentrating on your scalp. We did sell an olive oil treatment for *the hair*..heavy oil massaged directly onto the scalp may be clogging your folicle. Why not let your scalp breathe a little. I would not resort to extensions as a side effect can be hair loss. Alopecia can be a side effect of many medical issues including diabetes, thyroid problems. It is a side effect of hormones too. If you have ever taken any type of hormone or birth control, hair loss is a major side effect.
think about things and see your Dr. for some blood work and a physical. If it cannot be cured, human hair wigs today are common place (very expensive)and if you take you wig to your stylist, he/she can cut it while it's on your head ie if it is too thick etc...You may need that working with the public after you pass the bar!
Bless your heart i wish you much happiness.

There are many reasons for hair loss. It can be hereditary as well as from child birth, illness, medications, stress, diet or from poor hair care.

So much for the treatments they have today for this and not everything works for everyone.

You can talk to your doctor about doing a blood work up to see what your body is missing in terms of vitamins and minerals. Most of what our bodies need gets lost in the food processing and cooking even when we do eat properly. Many medications also depletes our bodies and many standard supplement labels aren't correct in the actual amounts given on their labels. So you might want to google more info on this or talk to someone in a health food store about dietary supplements. And the label should read, no sugar or starch added.

In terms of hair grooming: I would also suggest you keep your hair short, simply styled...use a wide tooth comb instead of a bush. Avoid holding a hair blower to close to the shaft of your hair and scalp. Avoid brushes and combs that have those little balls on the tips of them. Avoid using rubber bands to tie back your hair. And if your hair isn't oily avoid shampooing every day. Every so often change your shampoo as they have a tendency of building up in the hair shaft and on the scalp causing stress on the hair. In fact many people tend to think they have a dandruff condition (((flakes))) when in fact it's only shampoo build-up...which by the way also makes hair go limp. Always make sure you have rinsed your hair off properly, don't rush this process and gently pat dry instead of rubbing hard. Avoid hair and skin products that have alcohol in them if your hair and skin are dry. Why many products for dry hair and skin have alcohol in them is beyond me. Know there isn't much difference in the many shampoos that are offered to us. Suave which isn't expensive is an excellent choice....a gentle baby shampoo is another and both can be gotten in a dollar store. The best and cheapest conditioner one can use is good old Hellmann's Mayonnaise. Applied after shampooing...let sit for 1/2 hour ((covered in a plastic bag to keep the natural heat in and to keep from dripping))) and rinse off very-very well. Don't over condition your hair with any conditioner as that can cause problems too. Once or Twice a month is good enough with a good conditioner. Avoid products that claim they make your hair fuller and thicker as this kind of product will fill the hair shalf and cause the hair to stress.

There are also several different companies like Hair-Club for men (((which deal with both women and men))) with hair loss....they are run by doctor's who specailize in hair and hair loss...so you might want to find a company near you to have a consultation with....find out more about what is going on with your hair and what can be done about it.

While hair extensions are great looking, they too will damage and stress out your hair. Wigs and hats are ok but remember ones scalp does need to breathe properly or they can also be damaging to hair...so limit the use.

If you color or perm your hair...STOP. Using chemicals even done properly by professionals stresses out the hair.

As a retired hair professional, I need to remind you its very hard to say more without seeing the condition of your hair...

Do you recall anyone saying to you that you should brush your hair 100 strokes a day? That was supposed to strengthen your follicles and prevent hair loss. I have a friend who swears by it.

I've had issues with my hair too - especially since my last pregnancy. I use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and I also see an acupunturist as she treats my scalp. You may want to try that route too . . . it doesn't hurt and it's supposed to wake-up the hair follicles.

Hi Chandra,

I was losing too much hair also. I went to see a Naturopath and she did an Adrenal Gland test on me. Sure enough, my Adrenals were fatigued. The Adrenals effect nearly every organ in your body, esp your Thyroid. My thyroid was low, which she thinks was causing the hairloss. You might want to go the natural route to find out the cause, rather than masking it with medicine. I also think accupuncture will help. Good Luck!

have you been stressed out lately? or taking a new medication? that can definitely trigger hair loss. as a hair stylist, i know that hair loss is unfortunately irreversible. but you can take vitamins to continue to prevent it from happening. you can also try something called biotin. it's a pill i think they may sell at sephora.

You are too young to be experiencing hair loss! I know that I can help you. I agree that you should check your thyroid with the help of your doctor. I also know of a device that stimulates the scalp to cause it to regrow hair. It has helped many people, and I know that it can help you. I am an independant distributor for NuSkin Enterprises and their product called the Galvanic Spa does this. Take a look at it on my website www.1525.agingmyway.com Click on Galvanic Spa, and then skim down to where you can click to see the before and after photos of people's hair. The device does many other things too, and you'll see that information first. Good luck, and if I can help you further, my contact information is on the website.

Nioxin...it's a shampoo/conditioner. My hair dresser suggested it before giving birth and using it for a long period of time. I lose a lot of hair after giving birth and stop nursing. She also mentioned she had chemo patients use it and not lose any hair. You can buy it at salons...I've seen it at salons in Walmart and Penny's, too.

i would have to say that the oil is really bad to use. i was told by my dr when i was prego and having some (more then normal) thinning in my hair that 1 reason for hair loss is clogged pores (i think that's the way they put it) and that you have to keep your scalp and pores/follicles (?) clean to allow more hair to replace the hair that naturally falls out. there are certain products that do this, some expensive, some just about the price of something like panteene, but you have to really do the research. DON'T use anything harsh on your hair, DON'T use anything that can clog up preventing new hair growth. good luck, i hope i helped some. just ask your dr. or go into a salon and see if they have any suggestions on what products to use.

I would see a dermatologist and also have you thyrod checked. My husband was losing his hair real fast and the dermatologist told him it was from stree. He had cortisone injection in his head which made the hair grow better but as soon as the stress left he had his hair growing in again. Good luck Ann
