Hair Loss and Insomnia

Hello, I am a 23 year old first time mom of a 7 1/2 month old daughter. I have noticed that have quite a few gray hairs (50 or so) and I also loose a lot of hair in the shower and whenever I brush it. I just find my hair everywhere! I also can't sleep at night. it's usually at least 3am before I can fall asleep. Luckily, my daughter doesn't wake up until 8:30-9am. As soon as I put her down for her nap, I fall asleep too. I can't stay awake and remain tired the rest of the day and then the cycle starts over again. I have tried using OTC sleep aids, but they don't work. I also want to add that I had all of these symptoms as well as frequent panic attacks before I was pregnant. While I was pregnant, all of the symptoms disapeared. Then, following delivery, they have returned. I find the only person I care about is my baby. While I continue to do housework, it's begrudgingly since I rarely get any help. I know I should probably go to the doctor, but I won't have insurance until December and with the holidays, I probably won't be able to see anyone until January. Also, if anyone knows of any good Doctors in the area, that would help as well. So, if any of you have experienced this, or can give me a little insight into what may be going on, I would really appreciate it!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I've made an appointment and under everyone's suggestions, I am going to have my thyroid tested. Thanks to everyone who responded.

Hi J., sorry to hear you are experiencing all this. Have you ever been diagnosed for depression/anxiety? Some of the things you complain of I experienced. As for the huge amounts of hair lost, stress plays a huge factor in that. See a doctor soon:-)

J.,

Hi I do hair for a living and with the gray that has nothing to do with the loss and isomnia. With losing you hair usually every women after they have the baby loose alot of hair my husband complained all the time that my hair was everywhere. Like you said you had some of the symptons before you pregnancy. I would pay out of pocket and see the doc if you are feeling this bad I live in chandler I and my doc is on 101 and baseline Dr Ellison's office the number is ###-###-#### I see Elizabeth Paterson I have been going to her for more than 10yrs now and love her.

Hi J.,
It's me again...DEFINITELY DEFINITELY get your thyroid tested!! Basha's Grocery has a program where you can go in an pay cash for thyroid (and other) tests. $48 dollars...then you can take the results to your primary care doctor, thus cutting the cost in half or more! check out their website for more info. www.bashas.com, go to the healthstyles section! Take care of you,
S.

J.,
Do not wait. The minute you get your insurance get to the Dr. ( Dr. Phillip Ku ###-###-####) He is located next to the Chandler hospital. It sounds like your thyroid is underactive. You have described the same symptoms that I had. All it is , is a simple blood test and then if it is, Dr. Ku will give you a prescription for Synthroid to counteract the underactive. It takes about a month to start feeling better, but it really does help the mental aspects, as well as the hair, lack of energy, lack of sleep. Please call and make an appointment!!!!!

Hi J.,
I would highly rec'd contacting Marilyn Kieffer-Andrews, PhD, Psych NP. ###-###-####. She specializes in pregnancy and post-partum difficulties. She is a psychologist and psychiatric nurse practitioner, known for her keen ability to assess and treat women with appropriate psychotropic medication. In the past, she worked as a nurse midwife for 20yrs. I think she would be able to tease apart your symptoms and address the probable hormonal imbalance. Hope this helps! **Call for an appointment soon - I think she books out 2-3 months.
Best,
A.
